This is a fish report for Saturday, February 22, 2014.
My best friend Brett came out from Saugus to visit me on Friday evening. I made some awesome fish tacos for everyone, we drank some beer and then prepared our gear for a full day of fishing on Saturday. The plan was to head to Long Beach in hopes to land some of the many halibut we've been seeing appear on the boards. Scotty (Bassmeister) was supposed to meet us there.
We got up and left the house right after 7am. We embarked on our (almost) 90 minute trip down to Long Beach and met up with Scott (who had been there since 5:30am) on the sand around 8:30am. We each rigged up a bait and wait with a healthy dose of squid and then started throwing the LC. Brett hooked up almost immediately on something big on his bait and wait. He's running to it as it's bent in half as is screaming away. He starts to battle the monster on the other end, but after about a minute, it snaps his 30lb mono. So, he rigs up again and casts out. We work our lures for about an hour when I notice Brett has another fish on his bait and wait. He starts reeling in and after about 7 minutes, reels in healthy bat ray. His first one and personal best. We get some great video, a crowd draws on the beach and we release him safely.

We go back to casting... still met with little success. At this point, I'm ready to throw in the towel and go get a beer over at Yard house. I tie on a double drop-shot rig and cast out a few times. On the 4th cast, I finally feel a tap. I cast again... tap, tap, BAM! I set the hook and shortly afterwards, reel in a halibut! FINALLY!!! For months I have been targeting this fish, and now I finally get one. It's a pretty decent sized one, but it looks to be a short. If I had to guess, I'd say it was about an 18-19". Close, but no cigar. Who cares... I nailed what I was after and even if it was a 30", I wouldn't take home anything from the LBC.

We cast for about an hour more, with a few taps, but no hookups. Well, my 4 hours of parking time are up... time to get some lunch and a beer! We headed over to Yard House, shared a burger (can't ruin sushi for tonight) and had my favorite beer; Rubicon Brewing Monkey Knife Fight!!!. At that point, we decided to head home to fish locally instead of sticking around the LBC.

We got to a familiar beach around 3pm, with plenty of time to fish before sundown. One thing I noticed is that the place was overrun with kids and other anglers. Not the norm for this beach. We fished our LC's into the massive waves for as long as we could. Brett luckily hooked up on a really nice sized BSP. I had one too, but it unbuttoned close to shore. That would prove to be the best part of my time here and we should've just packed it up and went home at that moment.

About an hour into our time there, Brett's "bait and wait" setup bends in half again and then falls over. He was far away from it, so I went over to help out. I picked it up and started reeling it in... and not paying as much attention to where I was walking as I should've been. About 10 seconds later, I ended up slipping on an algae covered rock, and went flying heels over head! My buddy said I looked like a turtle, upside down on the rocks. I landed pretty hard on my back and my shoulder, but I got up and fished the next 90 minutes like a champ! The best part... it's all captured on film (again). When I got home and downloaded the footage to my computer, my wife and best friend had a hoot laughing over the footage... especially when going frame-by-frame. The best part is when my feet actually go up higher than my head and the camera comes off of my head (again) so you can see all of me in it's falling state. I'm getting quite good at this falling thing during fishing. I'm going to have to start putting the Benny Hill music to each video so I can become the next YouTube sensation!
(No... I didn't get up this fast. It took me about a minute to compose myself and then look for where my camera fell off. I edited out the boring parts again.)

And now, the frame-by-frame scenes that had my friend and wife rolling on the floor... all the while saying sorry that I got hurt.

We ended the day of fishing at Mugu State Beach... the waves were beyond insane here, so obviously the fishing blew. We left right around sunset... made our way home for a quick shower and then off to our normal night of all-you-can-eat sushi! Thanks for reading!!!
