First off I would like to thank the 155 Big Fish Tournament entries and the 115 Blind Bogie Entries for showing up and participating in our derby today. Fishing was pretty good today as the fish bit very well in the warm weather. Beautiful sunny skies with a little cloud cover and slight winds Tons of people where showing up to the weigh in with nice sized fish. An absolute jug of fish in the 3lb class where checked in. However it would take a fish over the 4lb mark to crack the top 10!
Bait fisherman continued to hammer the fish at the West Shore and the Santiago Flats. Anglers soaking Powerbait in the Garlic and Salmon Egg scents did very well. Adding additional scent such as the Bite On Garlic or Trout Feast Smelly Jelly made offerings stand out from others on the shore. Nightcrawler fisherman did very well going "Old School" fishing a crawler under a bobber or on a traditonal Carolina rig with an inflated crawler. Keep in mind that the water is starting to clear up again and long leaders have been getting bit a little bit better than the shorter ones. 18-22in leaders have been the hot ticket as the day progresses.
Trollers have been doing very well as the TROPHY sized fish have defintley been keyed in on the lakes abundant baitfish (shad, silversides, sculpins) population! Going aganinst the grain today paid off big today as the top 2 heaviest fish where caught on BASS sized stick baits, a CD 07 and a Pointer 78. However guys trolling the size 04 Flickershads, SC Shiners in the size 05, Rapalas in the CD 03 and CD05 have been catching a lot of fish. All the traditional colors are working great. Also one angler reported limiting out trolling a nightcrawler on a 6ft leader behind a 1/2oz weight in what can only be described as a poor mans downrigger.
Plastic Fisherman have also been doing very well on a variety of baits. Guys fishing the trout worms have been doing very well on the White color, Chrt and White and Pink. Fishing these worms on either a split shot rig or drop shot rig has been very productive. Both Trout King and Berkley Worms are getting bit. Mice tail guys have been catching them on a variety of colors. The two hottest colors have been the Bubblegum/White and White Bubblegum Mice tails with the Peral White Florecent Orange, Florecent Red Chartruse and the Orange Silver Chartruse colors also getting bit well. Adding scents such as the Trout Feast Smelly Jelly (which bonds well with plastics) and the Bite On Roe has been furthering enhancing offerings. The big news this year has been guys fishing the Minnow style baits. Fishing these on a drop shot rig, split shot rig, lead head, lead head and bobber rig or fishing them weightless a la Senko stlye have all been very productive. Fishing all of the above mentioned baits it is advised that you fish nothing heavier than 3lb test line and sometimes even using florocarbon which is denser than mono and promotes your lure staying down. Hot colors in the Minnows has been the Salsa color, Smoke Sparkle, Yellow and White, Pink and White and Chartruse colors.
