ONE MORE TIME This was our third attempt to hit this new AO. The first two times were blown out by super high winds. But this day the conditions were nothing short of stellar:

slight offshor breeze
clear blue skies
1 to 2 foot waves
obvious structure
miles of open beach
on the sand at grey light (6am)

SHOWING A RETIRED MILITARY VET HOW TO DO IT My friend Harold is the sweetest, kindest most compassionate guy you'll ever meet. He has been asking me to take him fishing with me for awhile so he can learn how to catch some fish. He has been hitting the pier for the last couple of years but no one ever helped him learn how to fish. So I have taken him out twice before but conditions haven't been good until today. He was so excited to finally get to spend time with me and really learn. This was going to be the day:Shocked:

IT STARTED OUT LOOKING GOOD I brought Harold one of my UL outfits and rigged it up for him, showed him how to put the plastic fake sand worms (B.G. aka 'crack) on the hook, how to cast, and slowly reel it in. In no time he caught a perch. He said he was all set so I handed him the bad of 'crack' and started the hunt for the flatty one sided fishes (butts). I started to slowly make my way down the beach as Harold stayed put.

SOMETHING IS NOT RIGHT I had made my way about 200 yards down the beach from Harold and was just enjoying myself watching the dolphins and the seas lions and the beautiful sunrise when I look back behind me to see Harold walking down the beach towards me. He had no pole or anything else with him. I knew then something was not right. so I walked up to Harold and he tells me that he had caught 4 fish and was reeling his 5th one when the sand he was standing on above the rocks gave way. He fell down hard on the rock and he is sure he broke some ribs. Yikes... so I immediately switch into emergency mode and we get back to the car. I tell him we need to get him to the emergency room and get his chest x-rayed to make sure there isn't something worse (like a punctured lung or internal bleeding). He is able to drive himself so he dumps me off at my car and meets his wife at the hospital. I feel terrible for my friend.:Embarrassed:

LEFT BY MYSELF - WHAT TO DO? So we were on the beach for maybe 20 minutes. With Harold gone I couldn't stay because it was on a military base. It was still early and about 40 minutes before high tide. I could just go home and go to work early or... why not? I could just head down the road to our 'go-to' AO. Yup so that's what I did. The only thing about this AO is there ain't nothing there except big piggies and a wayward cabby or YFC. Never seen any sign of the H.buts.

SHAKEN BUT NOT STIRRED:Wink: Actually Erik (ErikAllen17), I got rolled - AGAIN. What would be a fishing outing if I didn't get dunked at least once, right? So I some fish using my UL outfit and a Daiwa DB Minnow (Herring pattern). It was really fun catching the big boy/girl BSP with plus it's a whole lot less damaging than a LC110 cuz it only has 2 trebles. I was still a nice day out but I kept thinking about Harold. I hoped he'd be OK

Here's a couple of pics from the 2nd AO (without Harold unfortunately)

WHEN CAN WE GO AGAIN I told Harold to call me as soon as he found out about his injuries. He called me after I got home. Turned out that he had 4 broken ribs and a broken pinky. But next words out of his mouth are, " when can we go again? How bout tomorrow, Nick?" I couldn't believe it. "Is your wife OK with you going again and so soon?" Apparently she was. But he was so excited about catching the 4 fish that he was totally hooked now on fishing and no broken rib is gunna stop him now. Looks like we have another convert boys:LOL:

So that's my story for today. Have a super weekend!!!

All the best to you all,

Nick

Wow! Tough going. You sure that it isn't the pain killers talking when Harold mentioned round two tomorrow? He may feel differently after he sleeps on it. Prolly gonna feel like he got hit by a truck. Well, great report as always Nick and hope you guys have a great session if you do make it out!

What a bummer I wasn't able to make it out with you guys. That way I could've reminded Harold that he isn't allowed to fish near rocks. I told him that last time after I heard the first story of him falling down that bank of rocks near Pelican Point. Crying out to his wife to help him as he lay there in pain...

It's official. Neither of you can fish anywhere except the nice, soft sand. I worry about you two out there.

Glad he's doing well and glad you hooked onto some nice perch. Our spot rarely disappoints. I'll be seeing you guys out on the sand soon. We'll beam up Scotty and all hit another AO soon.

Oh wow Nick, I'm glad that Harold is somewhat alright... as bad as it sounds, it could have been much worse.
Thank you for sharing the passion with others my friend. :Big Grin:
