I am posting from my phone so this will be short.

After weeks of being sick with three different colds/flu, and some devastating life changes, I am back on the salt and back in action!!!

A.O. - classified
Time - 6:15am to about 8:00am
Conditions - somewhat flat on an outgoing high tide

Met up with Remington (aka K-dub) and started flinging the LC (ms anchovy). Immediately hook into a short. We see fish jumping out of the water left and right. At one point, we saw ten butts jump in a matter of 15 seconds. Some were way out and some were in close. We saw schools of perch and butts in the skinny. Bait fish jumping like crazy.

K-dub hooks into a couple of shorts and then I do too. Next up...a legal slammed me at about three feet in front of me and in about 2 feet of water! Taped out at 23 but I was not satisfied yet. A few casts later, I hook up into my first non-halibut fish of the year. It's a fat zebra perch! Taped out at 16 inches exactly.

K-dub hooked into a couple of more shorts and then I cast out far, way far...I get bit immediately! K-dub sees this and we were excited! It felt short at first, then the rod loaded up BIG TIME!!!! It took some runs and the absence of tidal movement did not help. I got it onto the beach and it is definitely legal! I taped it out and it was 25.5 inches!!! My second legal of the day and 8th of the year!!! Sorry the report is a bit dry but again, it's from my phone...enjoy the pics.

Thanks K-dub for being my wingman and photographer! And....congrats on your BEAST!!!!

Lesson of the day: life throws you lots of obstacles, some seem manageable and some do not. It is equally important how we handle these obstacles as it is getting beyond them. If not for failure and a learning curve, I would not be where I am today. I have been blessed with friends, family and God who are patient and forgiving. For that, I am blessed.

So today, I had some errands to run and had a small window of opportunity to fish in the morning. I am glad I did.

AO: classified
Gear: St Croix Wild River 8' and my trusty calcutta; Zebra MS Aurora Black LC
Conditions: similar to the day before

I got out to the spot a little late this morning. I already see two guys out there fishing. It was peak grey light so I knew that I had to get going real quick based upon yesterday's outing. My second cast, I get slammed. I pull her in and it measures out to 21". Let her go and cast again. In the meantime, the other two guys come up to me and one of them happens to be my friend Kenichi. They were skunking it up. I cast out and land 3 shorts back-to-back-to-back. Kenichi runs over to me in amazement. I notice the first sign of a slight offshore breeze and hail mary the LC out there. I started to say a little prayer for thanksgiving (I don't pray to catch fish). Three cranks in and BLAMMO! I reel and reel and reel, the fish takes short runs and takes drag. I button down the drag just a little bit but remembered all of the advice given to me by Don, Dan, Wingnut,...I breathe, let the fish get tired, and land her. NOT the beast I was expecting considering that it actually gave me a run for my money. It measured out at 23". The tape marks on my rod are 22.5" and 33".

http://i1285.photobucket.com/albums/a589/benjilovers/0F231709-390E-49C8-B389-12827C9E25D8_zps8ylgdnzk.jpg (http://s1285.photobucket.com/user/benjilovers/media/0F231709-390E-49C8-B389-12827C9E25D8_zps8ylgdnzk.jpg.html)
http://i1285.photobucket.com/albums/a589/benjilovers/6E1F492F-C40C-4633-8D7C-C953A15C0305_zpssdp8qdyp.jpg (http://s1285.photobucket.com/user/benjilovers/media/6E1F492F-C40C-4633-8D7C-C953A15C0305_zpssdp8qdyp.jpg.html)

I make a few more casts and hook into another short. Three more guys show up. No one is catching and all eyes are on me. Oh, the pressure!!! I hook into another one from far out. This one also fought pretty hard, but I knew it would be a close call on it. The thing with these fish are that they are ANGRY and don't want to lay still. I measured it out to 22", but it is questionable. We will call it short to be prudent.

http://i1285.photobucket.com/albums/a589/benjilovers/DAE375D2-A83C-4739-AB14-C133D06733CA_zpsni6pwjfz.jpg (http://s1285.photobucket.com/user/benjilovers/media/DAE375D2-A83C-4739-AB14-C133D06733CA_zpsni6pwjfz.jpg.html)
http://i1285.photobucket.com/albums/a589/benjilovers/6DCAB2A8-7306-40E5-84AE-A7F1C2C7F2E3_zpsaclqtuhl.jpg (http://s1285.photobucket.com/user/benjilovers/media/6DCAB2A8-7306-40E5-84AE-A7F1C2C7F2E3_zpsaclqtuhl.jpg.html)

Next cast, I get hit again! I know this one is short. You know that you have had your fill of shorts when you no longer bother with pictures, measurements, nor even trying to beach it. I tried to let it self-release and it did after beaching it. Now, I am feeling guilty, the guy on my right finally nails an ultra short. I tell Kenichi and that guy to cast parallel along the deep trough. They thank me and start casting to my far left and my far right. Sure enough...fish on for both of them! So I continue to cast and yup, you guessed it, another one. This one doesn't fight but I can feel its weight. I tape her out to 23.25".

http://i1285.photobucket.com/albums/a589/benjilovers/76E6C223-445D-420F-81CC-5F4C01081C1E_zpstbdelz6z.jpg (http://s1285.photobucket.com/user/benjilovers/media/76E6C223-445D-420F-81CC-5F4C01081C1E_zpstbdelz6z.jpg.html)

Now, I tell Kenichi, "dude, fish my spot, I am going to go south." He does so and I head south. I manage another couple of shorts and a huge hit. This one felt like the beast that I lost at the same spot last year. Everything felt too familiar. I lost that one when it buried itself into the kelp stringer in front of me. I wouldn't let that happen again. I muscle it in thinking that I had a solid hook set. Wah wah wah....(cure Debbie Downer sad/ugly face). The LC pops out and goes flying into the air. Oh well!

So it was still a productive morning and my total tally was 2 solid legals, one close-but-no cigar non-legal, 9 shorts ranging from 12" to 21" and a fish story about the one that got away--AGAIN. 10 legal halibut for the year! Woohoo!

They are out there and it is a matter of time before you all get one too! Keep fishing strong and do your homework. One thing that I have learned is that bouncing off thoughts and observations with other anglers eliminates alot of skunkage and gets you one step closer to the prize!

Thanks for reading.

PIGGY BACK Kayak/Paddleboard Report

This piggy back report is for my friend Remington (aka K-dub). I posted it at the end because it DEFINITELY overshadows any report that I have written! :EyePop::Embarrassed::Envious:

After seeing me hook into two legals yesterday (the biggest being 25.5") K-dub gets butt envy. Although he landed a legal later on and lost a big one, he was not satisfied. I had to leave because God was ever-so patiently waiting for me at church but K-dub decided to go back and get his paddleboard/surfboard (sorry, I don't know the terminology of these things too well). Although he landed a legal later on and lost a big one, he was not satisfied. So he paddles out and makes 15 minutes of casts for naught. Then he casts out there with the LC and SLAMMO! He is on something big! At this point, it is all conjecture on my part because I do not know the details, so this part is a little loosely based upon facts but filled with drama from my imagination. He is sweating it big time! OMG, is this a huge halibut or some sea lion? What can it be??? "I hope I don't lose another LC today," he thinks while trying to keep calm....okay, back to facts. K-dub pulls in the beast after battling hard. The problem is that he has NO gaff, NO net, NO fish clip, NO fish grip...so after several attempts at gilling the fish with his bare hands, he successfully does so! Here is the glory shot! (Damn you K-dub...not because I was envious, but because I almost shat my pants in my church pants).

39" on the paddleboard/surfboard!!!

As someone else posted, Zebra Perch. Wingnut tells me that they are vegetarian and that mine was likely trying to chase off the LC but got hooked. It fought pretty hard for a perch and it was FAT.

Great job and don't let the bumps in the road gets you down. It may slow you up a bit, but you will bounce back soon enough. :Big Grin:
Wow... TEN legals already! :Envious:

Remington (K-Dub), what a beautiful Halibut, congrats! :Thumbs Up:
Jonathan (ToadsOnly) nailed a big Hali about the same size on the kayak Saturday and it came off his game clip.
Maybe I'll run into you on the sand one of these days...

I really hope to have the pleasure of fishing with you Arthur. Don & Ken speak very highly of you, I look forward to sharing the sand with you in the near future!

Great follow-up session guys! Still not sure why you didn't count the 22 to your totals Ken...as long as it measures up, what the heck?

Kelly,
:EyePop: THAT IS A BEAST!!! Kids around me at the Fresh Beat Band concert were wondering what the heck this old guy is squakin about when the concert hadn't even started yet. Nate and I were about the ditch our families and make a late run down there. I think that might have killed any future hallpasses though. I'd say there's a 40" fish lurking out there for someone soon...go get 'em guys!

Congrats!
Don

Ohhhh, now I know why the leader board had you down as 10?!?!
Dang Ken, Keep this up and you might be the first one to ever get 30 legals in one year...:EyePop:
Keep up the awesome work and maybe you can start selling some of those legals...
Take Care Bro,
Robert

"Thanks Bill! How is halibut smoked? I was curious. I still have left over fillets from last time and want to try something new."

Hi Ken, Smoked Hailbut----NOT SO GOOD!:Crying: Did it by accident once and, well I suggest not doing it.

However the other day I made up a great soup.

Used 2, 8oz. cans of diced tomato's, 1/2 onion chopped, 1 clove of garlic diced, 2 bay leaves, 1 can of condensed tomato soup, 1 cup of water, 2 table spoons of powdered chicken stock, 2 chopped celery. Mixed all together in a large pot and slow boiled for 20 minutes.

Then added 4 filets cut into 2" squares of some rock fish from the freezer, added some salt and pepper and let simmer for another 30 minutes. Made for a good warm dinner the other night when it was cold.
Sorry no pic's
