Always wanted to fish here now the wife is letting me go on my bday!
First time striper fishing and first time at DVL so hoping you guys can direct me in the right direction.
I was going to use my inshore gear 12-15lb test conventional reels on 6-7’ rods, I was mostly planning on trolling and drifting bait from a rental. Will this suffice or do I need heavier?

What are good trolling lures? How fast do I want to troll? where should I troll?

Is fresh macks, frozen anchovies good cut bait? Drift them in coves? by the dam?

My son hopefully will be coming with me and he loves cats and trouts
Could I get some recommendations for some good spots for him?

Sorry for all the questions just excited to fish this lake.

Thanks guys

my 2 cents...A lot of guys here don't like to share info. I'd help you but I have been skunked more than not (today for instance).
I am thinking of, and I suggest you do the same and hire a guide and save your self A LOT of time and $ in long run. (birthday present?)
It is a big lake and can be hard to figure out with out putting in some good time.
the lake was at least 50' low today. would not surprise me if it was 100'
here are couple topography lake maps you can print out and bring along.

your gear will be fine. I use 12lb. others like to use braid.
I use fish seeker diver to troll with around 2 mph. with it you can use spoons or swim bait with out a lip on it. I use about a 4' leader.
Fresh bait, the fresher the better. sometimes few feet of the bottom, sometimes you have to locate the fish at certain dept.
Good luck

Talk to the good folks at Last Chance bait and Tackle in Hemet if you can't afford a guide. They know how the bite is at DVL and what is and isn't working. I fish DVL every week and Stripey is being caught on a daily basis. You might want to check when Trout plants are happening there as well. If you aren't there the day the Trout are planted, what isn't caught by the shore anglers, is pretty much eaten by the Stripers and LMBs in very short order...
