I MUST CONFESS, living in Santa Barbara offers many options for beaches to fish, my house is 4 blocks from the ocean and I can do a one hour session including driving down and back on my motorcycle and catch between 3-10+ fish an hour on a typical day. Hey, I was even surprised at matching my personal best 16" BSP on one such session last week, go figure?!! So when I got a call from Exfactor Mikey to drive a couple of hours north, I admit, I had to plan ahead. I changed out my line hoping for some big fish, oiled my reel, stocked up with swivels, grubs, weights, dusted off the waders and packed in a way that I could fit that all on my motorcycle to meet up at Mikey's. The challenge with going this far is that this particular beach can be brutal with kelp, murky water, oversized waves, steep beaches, high winds, and dangerous rips and since it is out of the shadow of the Santa Barbara islands that keep the waves manageable. And for us, to drive two hours for 'nothing' doesn't happen very often.
We plan to leave at 7am so I am up early, packed the motorcycle and am off to Exfactor who is driving. The early morning temps are in the high thirties, brrr. On our way out of town Mikey picks up a friend Chuck who had some success the two times he's fished this beach, I have only fished this beach 4-5 times and Mikey hasn't even been to, or seen this beach before.
So we are off. I had to stop on the way out of town snap this photo three blocks from my home.

All packed up and ready ...

We pick up Chuck and head north. The fishing fundamentals look reasonably good, the waves are forecast for 1-2 foot ok for me, maybe there's a chance to keep the line in the water for a bit, I prefer 2-3 feet, but ok. We are just after a full moon, not my favorite moon cycle to fish since the swings on the tides are extreme and fast moving. The good news is that the typically high winds would be only 3-5 mph for the day. And we are off.
As we drive up the coast the ocean is flat. SO FLAT that you could launch a canoe or kayak without getting your feet wet. Oh no, my surf fishing motto, no waves, no current, no fish. This is a concern. By the time we make it to our destination, the temps are now up to 48 but with 'promise' of going all the way up to 81 (in Santa Barbara), the temps for fishing should be favorable for this January day. It is 9:15 am.
GETTING READY!

Here's the view as we drive in ... (we had high wind to our back for the first 30 minutes and then a light breeze)
http://i1194.photobucket.com/albums/aa363/davesomm/IMG_0349_zps6af40ae0.jpg (http://s1194.photobucket.com/user/davesomm/media/IMG_0349_zps6af40ae0.jpg.html)
I was hooked up when we arrive and after dressed, I head for the water. My first cast yields a 13" plump Barred Surf perch. I smile. There are tons of sand crabs and the fish look well fed. Fifteen minutes later I have 6, with 4 smaller BSP and then another 12". Exfactor then joins me. What I appreciate about Mikey is that he is always looking for the bigger fish and chooses to fish the LC for the day and lands a 13" right away.

The water is smeg free, Mikey smiles. There's promise. On the far outside, we see the waves build to 3-4 feet and fish the inside, hey this is good, really good, just what I like. Chuck joins us and we start fishing down the beach. We come across several fishermen (mostly bait and wait) but few who are skilled at the way we fish (yes, Perchin' Dave is still fishing the carolina rig with a grub and 1/2 ounce weight).
It seemed like everywhere we went there were fish. We looked for rips, for breaks in waves, for structure and fished that for about a mile or so. Exfactor and I gravitated towards rocks, Chuck avoided them. We did ok but couldn't seem to find the bigger models. The waves started to build. By the time we made it to a point the outside break was 6'. We fished the inside so it was still ok but the ideal conditions were about to change, and quickly. Exfactor found some good structure, and on a first or second cast pulls out a nice 14" BSP pictured here.

The conditions looked really good, but only for a short time. Dark blue water and some murk from sand and the fish were easy to find. We fished and pulled out some good ones, but none were the toads we were hoping for. Chuck finally joins us and hadn't really had much success on the way down (he's also fishing the carolina rig, he's up to 9 fish, me about 30, Exfactor about 10 on the LC. We fish this structure but -very- quickly the waves build and the water clarity that was deep blue turns mostly white and brown with little clarity. The bite turns off though we still caught a few. A dog joins me on the rock I am fishing on and almost bumps me off during some big waves that wash in. I see a surfer now ride a 12 foot wave. So much for wave height predictions .... way larger than the 1-2' predicted for the day!
Here's a coupe of fish that Mikey is landing ...

Mikey insists I leave before I was almost washed off the rock seen behind Mikey's left shoulder, and we start fishing our way back. We still found fish -everywhere- we went, mostly small. But we are now fighting some large sets that bring 3-4 feet of foam barreling in on the inside break on the steep beach. Chuck gets caught off guard and dumps in the water. By now it is 75 and though wet all over cools off in spite of the inconvenience. We go back for lunch and end our 4 hour session. Between the three of us we catch and release about 200 BSP. Mikey found a couple of 14", I found a couple of 13" a bunch of 10-12", Chuck a few 12" models and we all found tons of 8" size.
It was still a good day but as Mikey noted, it is a long way to go for BSP. We still had a great day. It was good to be on the water at a beautiful beach. There -were- a LOT of fishermen and surfers and everyone was out to enjoy the extraordinary weather. I would like to revisit this beach when the big ones are in and hope that the conditions are favorable at that time. Yes, we still had a great day. It was fun fishing an unfamiliar beach, and any day of fishing is still a great day!! Thanks Mikey for the invite, we all had a great time!
