Good morning all,
Went to Lake Perris Monday for my 45th B-day with the wife and dogs, and I could not wait to have my wife catch one on the jds13, she has been so instrumental on my lures, big time!!! Got there about 10:30 due to the fact we were a little tired from our trip up to San Simeon. Weather was warm and sunny 71, and water temp was 54 and rose to 58 by the end of the day. Fishing was slow, but I did meter alot of fish from 20 to 55ft, my wife tried a lot of smaller crank baits, shad, bluegill etc. throughout the day with no luck. Then towards the end of the day I see a guy hook one on the swim bait over by the island and later find out by the ranger it was 7 1/2 lbs. I was thinking it was our turn next, but nothing. So the sun is down, stern light is on and we start heading back and of course hit a couple spots on the way in, and just as I was reeling up for some shallower water my wives rod goes bendo drag peelin totally cool, shes fighting it in, fish is jumping, got the net ready, BOOM!!! 11.8, 26in green beast. Were high fivin, laughin, all that. We snap some shots, measure and back in she goes I was really proud of the wife, we were really blessed to get that fish. Great day to be out on the water with family.

The fish was my wives PB and pb for the jds13 10 inch trout at 30ft.

JDS13, You said you snapped some pics of your wive's personal best bass, well let's see them. I'm sure she would like other fishermen/fishergals to see them. Fishing pics are for sharing! Also like HuskerRod, I and others would like to see your jds13 baits.

Sweet looking rigs. What are the specs (material, weight, float, sink, slow sink)?

They are made from wood from Home Depot, 10 ounces, and ROF 12 to 16, I have not made any floaters at this time.

Now that's a "BRAG FISH" kudo's to your wife. Now ya gonna let her fish with you anymore? Nice work on the swimbait's as a woodworker myself I know how much work and pride goes into those. Great job again.

433264332743328Thanks for the cool words FNN members. This months been a little slow, Dec was alot better. Here are three of a five caught in Dec that made up part of a 48.4lbs 5 fish limit, top fish 10.12,9.9 and bottom 7.15 the other fish were 10.14 and 9.9. Just look at that sky..... totally blessed

JDS13 you have really got my attention with your swimbaits. A couple of more questions as a woodworker that has me curious. What did you use to make the fins and tail, the paint job is outstanding, I assume you are using an airbrush, what type of paint and finish coat do you use. How does the finish hold up and with the ROF of 12 to 16 how much weight are you adding. I would imagine it took many try's to get the weight and balance just right. Again I am very impressed at the finished product and not sure I have the skills to come even close but I would like to try someday.

Good morning Devoreflyer,
I would be happy to answer some of your questions, as far as do you have the skills, just look at some of the prices to buy a really nice swimbait, and that should help motivate and drive you to make some that catch these huge fish. First of the fins, your going to think cheesy, but they work. Right know I use my plastic dividers that you have in your plastic worm or lure holders, the tails I make are to big so I just use an old top to these divders and cut some tails out (cover in devcon to strengthen after painting). I use little srcoll saw, belt sander and dremel to shape them, then hand paint. I use acrylic paints with an airbrush, and devcon 2 ton epoxy to seal. Since each bait is a little different, weighting is a little tricky. I have a little fish tank next to my work station where I add weight, put it in the water and see if I need to add or take away lead, usually anywhere between 2 and 4 ounces, and yes it takes a few tries to get it right, your weights need to be center on the bottom 1/3 of your lure. As far as hardwhare for baits I dont want to promote any web sight so just goggle lure parts and go from there, thats where I buy 75% of my stuff, weights, eyes, lips, screws, etc. As far as the finished product, when big bass hit these things they almost always rip a fin off and scratch up the lure so im always repairing fins, paint and reapplying devcon, a small price to pay for a giant bass. Im always trying to improve on realism, making them stronger, swim better and paint jobs. Hopefully I have enlightened you on some aspects of making swimbaits, this definately is not how alot of people make there baits, these are some things that work for me. Its a fun and rewarding journey when it all come together, good luck.

JDS13 thanks so much for the info. Attached you will find a couple of "Primitive Canvas Covered Decoys" I have taken up making. They are an old style of decoy not found anymore but were used by the thousands on the Atlantic coast. Due to being canvas covered they rotted out early and are not often found today. They were quicker to make and lighter to carry than carved decoys. If I ever get caught up on my Honey Doo's and Bucket List items I am going to try lure making, you have inspired me. Thanks again.

Devore,

What do you seal the wood and canvas with on those decoys? I know they are light but how do they hold up in a decoy bag with other decoys? 6 or 12 slot bags work better?

DEVOREFLYER

chompot they are sealed with Kilz oil base primer (2 coats), it helps to shrink the canvas. In the "Olde Days" they just put them all in one big bag. They do hold up fairly well but a keel should be added if your going to use them as working decoys
