View Full Version : The Stuff Dreams Are Made Of! SWAT 4 Days of Halibut Heaven - Plus Bonus Report!

I’ve had an amazing run over the last month with new species and PB’s. Back in December, I tied my most calicos landed in a session from shore with 7 fish capped by a 21” beast. I FINALLY landed that illusive striper that had been haunting me for months. AND I capped off an amazing year by losing my 19th LC in a year...wait, I didn’t want that PB.:LOL: What happened over the last 4 days just continues a crazy run of luck for me and can only be described as simply AMAZING!

Day 1 - HaliPalooza, The Day After

So, thanks to some intel from Command followed by recon done by Ken (skunked4life), some troops, lead by Ken and Nate (BBQ Sushi) made it down to an A.O. and put the HAMMER down on some flatties, capped by 6 legals.:EyePop: Well, heading back down the day after with high hopes, I joined Ken and Dan (SPDan) for another go at these bad boys...and boy did we lay the wood to ‘em!

Ken led us to the honey hole, but things just didn’t want to kick in at grey light. I figured, uh oh, this might be one of those “you shoulda been here yesterday” deals. We worked our way down the beach and off in the distance, I could see birds working. Ken and Dan continued to work a hole that we had come across, while I marched down about a half mile to see what all the commotion was. Well, when I got there, I found out...torpedo barrage. I figured maybe there’d be some flat ones mixed in with all the activity but I just couldn’t keep the dang things off the LC. I finally gave up after landing a dozen or so of them and headed back to where I could see Ken and Dan working over some shorts.

Ken started things quickly followed by Dan. Ken moved up the beach a ways, where the fun had really happened the day before. When I got to him, I started working the trench in front of us and on my second cast in, BAM! My day really started. It looked like a legal but after measuring him up he just didn’t make the cut, coming in at about 21”. Two casts later, BAM! Another just short. Well, this is getting interesting. Two casts later...KABOOM! The right kind! I get him on the beach and he tapes out at about 24”. My first legal of the year!:Dancing Banana: Dan followed up shortly after with his first of the year, a 22.5” legal. What followed was simply amazing. There were flatties coming out of the water right in front of us and at times, it became sight fishing, casting at where they were breaking water. Ken had to leave early, but not before nailing 5 shorts. We met a really cool guy, Kelly (remington) who is now new to the FNN boards. Along with half a dozen or so other guys, it was like a hot perch bite...only these were flatties, up and down the beach in a half mile stretch. Dan had made his way back to the hole we found at grey light and nailed a 26” legal for his second of the day. As the day wore on, and my hallpass had WAY expired, I started making my way toward Dan and about 50 yards shy of his position, I lay into a heavyweight. He started coming in quick but I could tell he had some girth. I get him 5 feet from shore with a good visual and he BOLTS for open ocean. He looks to be a healthy 30ish” fish, but I could also see that I only had the tail hook in his lip and there was a nice wad of kelp wrapped on the line. Sure enough, I feel slack and hunch over in defeat. Oh well, can’t complain AT ALL about how this day went. I ended up with my personal best 10 flatties in one session, topped by a 24” legal, a dozen or so torpedos and my first two butterfly rays ever (new species), one of which had me going for a while with his barndoor imitation. Dan got 2 legals and 6 shorts. Ken got 5 shorts...and he left 2 1/2 hours early. Kelly ended the day with 11 shorts. 34 flatties between 4 guys in one session? EPIC!!! The other guys up and down the beach were hammering ‘em as well. Simply amazing...

Day 2 - Kicking Off The Mini-vacation Right

My wife decided that she wanted to get out of town for a few days with the kids and unwind a bit from the holidays since she still had some time off of work. Nowhere far, just as long as we were away from home. Well, fortunately, our hotel put me pretty dang close to the honey hole...might as well strike while the iron is hot. AND we were gonna be there for 3 nights, so I get to keep striking!

I gear up and realize that I didn’t bring my camera on the trip so I had to use my phone. Because I had left the family at the hotel, I needed to leave my headphones on in case they called and needed me to come back. Well, those headphones made for a big pain in the rear, so you’ll have to forgive me for the lack of photos...but I’m sure you’ll get the picture, so to speak. I figured it’s a Monday, I’d probably have the spot to myself. Well, there was another guy there, George, but we made another day of it. I went to chat with him and introduce myself and he told me that he had got a short right before I showed up. Things didn’t start off as hot as the day before and George made his way down the beach. Right after he left...you guessed it, the bite went off. In a half hour stretch, I landed 8 flatties, capped off by a 22.5” legal. After the 3rd short I was trying to yell down to George to come back but he couldn't hear me and I figured maybe he was having some luck of his own. This day was a bit different. The bite didn’t sustain as long and there were no visual signs like the day before, BUT I still managed a new personal best of 11 flatties in one session, with one torpedo and two more butterfly rays to cap off my count. George made his way back and right before he made it back to my location, laid into a 26” legal. He didn’t score anything else, but two fish capped off by that nice fish is a great session in anyone’s book.

Day 3 - Highs and Lows

One thing I noticed over the last couple days is that these fish didn’t get active till after the sun was up, so I decided on a different strategy for Day 3. I knew the tide was gonna be low so I went to a spot that I had some luck at during the spring of last year. I planned to fish the greylight here and head over to the honey hole right as the sun peaked out. Well, not the brightest idea I ever had. The structure I wanted to fish is only reachable on a extremely low tide or with a REALLY far cast. When I got there, I realized that I was gonna have to get in deep to make that cast. SO, my dumb wades in chest deep and proceeds to get hammered by waves. Boy that can wake you up fast considering the air temp was measuring 47°. AND, I was still coming up about 30 yards shy of my target. Needless to say, I got the heck outta there and headed back to the promised land.

Again, I figured I’d be the only one there, but as I walk up to the spot, I see Kelly and a friend working the area. We immediately start into ‘em again. After 20 or so shorts, you kinda start to get a good feel of what should end up legal and put the right bend on the rod. Well, on my third cast, BAM, big hanger! I start working him through the trench but POOF! He pulls the hook and wins his freedom. A few casts later, BAM, another good hanger, this one doesn’t give me the time of day and unbuttons really quick in the battle. Two good fish gone and I’m thinking, uh oh, one of THOSE days. I quickly get a couple of shorts and Kelly nails a 22.5” legal. His buddy, Curtis, starts laying into the pancake stack as well and as he and Kelly were measuring up a fish that ended up JUST shy of legal, I get nailed. To my surprise this fish decides to do a marlin immitation and starts tailwalking down the trench in front of me. I was like, “What the heck? Am I in Cabo?” I immediately do the largemouth bass technique of laying the rod inverted to try and drive the fish down, thinking he might spit the hook at that rate. It works and I get him settled in. Having pulled the hooks on a few fish over the last couple of days I worked him nice a slow and let him wash up with the surge. He tapes out at 25” and I have my first legal of the day. We continue to work the spot and manage another nice handful of shorts before we start making our way down to some holes to the south. Kelly has to leave but decides to fling out a few more casts and it pays off big time. He lays into a nice 24” legal which he packs up for dinner. I hit another pancake and realize that it’s about time for me to leave, but decide to call my wife to extend my hallpass. She says fine and I get an extra half hour to do some damage...well, I MAY have taken a LITTLE longer than a half hour. Three casts after I hang up with her, KABOOM! Game on again! This time I can feel the right kind. I take my time, get him to the skinny and see a good mid to high 20’s fish coming near my feet. Again, though, I can see that he’s only got the trailer hook in his lip and sure enough, he makes a run and DOINK! Bye Bye! Oh well, another great day that I can’t complain about. SO, I keep working and don’t get any love but right as I’m about to walk back to the car, make a move back to the main honey hole for a COUPLE of last casts. Well, it pays off. On my second cast, I get nailed and he heads straight for the kelp. I keep working him and he comes free. After a short battle I get him on the beach for my second legal of the day, taping out at about 23”. While I’m measuring him up, Curtis comes up behind me. I had thought he had left but he was just working some spots upstream of my position when he saw me hook up. He asks if I’m gonna keep the fish and I reply that I let all my fish go (except for one that I gave to a friend:Wink:). He then asks if he can keep it to feed his family since he only had a dose of pancakes throughout the day. It was great fishing with these two guys and I’m only happy to oblige. With time run out, I head back to the hotel with a new PB of two legals in one session. Not sure of the exact numbers for Kelly and Curtis but they got quite few fish, capped off by Kelly’s 2 legals. I ended up with 5 shorts and 2 legals.

[B]Day 4 - Keeping The Streak Going

At this point, I’m not sleeping well. I keep thinking that the next day’s gonna be even better! One problem, though, is my wife’s patience is wearing thin with my excessively tardy returns. I promise her that I’d cut the session short and head back at greylight. The clock is ticking so I’m really hoping the fish get it in gear this morning. Well, they didn’t disappoint. I get to the spot and this time, it’s all mine. Right as the sky starts to light up, so do the flatties. It’s one bite after another for the next hour. Short strikes, pulled hooks, broken hooks (probably from over-zealous hook removal from prior fish) but I still manage 12 shorts...a new PB flattie count for one session. There were no big hook-ups today. Even the fish that broke hooks didn’t feel like the “right kind”. I did manage a couple of YFC to add to the count, but with a nickname like Colonel Croaker...go figure. All toll for 4 days, I managed 39 flatties (including four legals), a baker’s dozen jack smelt, 4 butterfly rays and 2 YFC. WOW! I don’t think it can be said any other way...WOW!

The closest thing to legal today taping out at 21.75”

"Hope you enjoyed the read!" HA! Now there's an understatement.. My heart's skipping faster than John Travolta on his way to a Justin Bieber concert..
I've never heard anything quite like it. Closest I can recall is when people have a near death experience and return to tell us what heaven's like.
May your bubble never burst..

Sensei! That was a GREAT read! Just some epic fishing of halibut and men! You not only brought in tons of fish, you recruited Kelly to FNN!

You know in the Karate Kid movies where Daniel-San is supposed to be the big karate hero? Well, your sessions reminded me if all of those scenes where Miyagi-Sensei goes ape nuts on the kids bullying Daniel-San. You are truly the Sensei!

I hope that our combined intel on the area pays off on Saturday!

May the remainder of 2014 be as epic as these first few days of 2014 for you and your family!

You lucky S.O.B.... don't take it personal, it's just extreme envy and jealousy! I can only hope to lay into a Hali-Hole like that one day. I've seen videos of 100's of Hali's hanging around, chasing a bait... but have yet to experience anything like that myself. Good news is, if I catch 2 Hali's in 1 session, it'll be my personal best!

Heading up north to Santa Barbara tomorrow morning to do some grey light fishing (hopefully with a northern SWAT'er).... so please, send some of that luck my way!

Congrats again on the run... and make sure you keep that wife happy. Wives have the ability to shut down even the best of bites by making us stay home if they're mad!

Excellent report Don! What a great couple of days and a absolute pleasure to share some of that "classified" beach real estate with you and Ken. The intel on the LC was 1st given to me by Dan in the parking lot at 0' dark-thirty & later confirmed in action by you & Ken.

I have been a plastic pitching fool for years & now I'm a LC believer!

Sunday's Count: 11 shorts

Tuesday's Count: 7 shorts & 2 legals (22-1/2" & 24") both legals on the LC!

EPIC!!!!!!

So what do you do when they won't bite the LC? Go Home?

So what do you do when they won't bite the LC? Go Home?

I have only fished the LC once & that was this past Tuesday. Knocked the snot out of them and like I said, this was the 1st time throwing a Lucky Craft.

No need to go home if I don't get bit on my 2nd future outing throwing a LC. My Loomis NRX likes to fire plastic so I always have a "plan-B" when I go into battle.

Hi Don:

What can be said about your "multi day halibut convocation". The words that comes to my mind are:astounding, amazing, unbelievable, one-in-a-lifetime-event (hopefully not), gift. I think gift seems the most appropriate because to enjoy that much halibut action for several days from the surf is truly a gift to you and because you spent the considerable time writing this excellent post now it is a gift you have given to us to enjoy with you. So thank you for this and I am so glad that you had a time in the surf that you will remember for a lifetime.

I hope that that the right conditions line up for you again and again as you pummel the waters with your LCs. And that you continue to share your "gifts" as they come with us

take care,

Nick

Ok ILL fe.S.S up! There is a particular A.O. that the only bait the Halibut will strike and the only bait I'll throw is in fact the LC flash minnow! Those particular fish will have no part of anything accept live bait or the LC! I would like to refer to it as FIREHOUSE FISHING 101!:Big Grin::Secret::Big Grin:

Gotcha. :Big Grin: This A.O. has always bit well on plastic when the butts are around. The only problem & it's a good problem I guess, is you catch a lot of shorts. They might not be 22", but they sure can tear up a lot of rubber in no time.

Going to throw some Megabass at them tomorrow before work & see how they go? Hope I can figure out how to post pics as my earlier attempt failed miserably.

Did you really have to send me all those updates..:Rolls Eyes:
I so wanted to just skip work and toss a line, with all of you guys....:Fishing Hole:
I was glad you got to experience, what a few of us were blessed to experience in the past.
But, just like years past, the info was shared and multiple people got to enjoy some awesome fishing...
I am also glad that you enjoyed the mixed fish dinner and that your wife liked the froo froo drink...:Big Grin:

Hi ya Don,

What a great write up for your 4 day session Brotha bachiboy!
:Thumbs Up: WOW! ...... 39 flatties and 4 legals ... :EyePop: when an AO goes off .... it really :Envious: goes off!!!

Your read made me feel just like like I was right there with you! Ha ha ha!

My PB two day count for pancakes in a single session is 15 and followed by 12 the next day. When the Halibut are on the chew ... one can expect large numbers of pancakes like we've both experienced. :Fishing Hole: Still .... catching is definitely a lot of fun!

Between your (4) four legals, Ken's (4) four legals, Nates (2) legals and my (2) two legals .... we've put (12) twelve legals on the S.W.A.T. Leader Board for the first ten days of the 2014 Season .... this is just outstanding men! :Big Grin:

Thanx for the fantastic fish report Brotha!

SP Dan <"))><

PS .... Try to stay out of the dog house with the "Control Tower" if you can Sir  I'll see you in the salt!

Great report, and way to go on the start of your 2014 campaign! Thanks for posting this as well, great read and very inspiring. Living out here in the desert, I've had a small itch to take a trip and try my hand at surf fishing. After reading this well written report (and others like it), that itch has become very irritating and I will be making it out to the coast asap to hit the salt for the first time ever.

Nope...still just a student of the game. If I was oh so wise, how the heck did I lose more legals than I caught?:Rolls Eyes: There's always more to learn and I still have a ways to go. Nothing personal about it...you're right Erik! I am one lucky S.O.B. The first day alone was something out of a fishing show. Never thought I'd hit a spot where we could sight fish flatties. We'd see one go airborne, cast at him, and actually stick some of 'em. Truly remarkable! I hope that that the right conditions line up for you again and again as you pummel the waters with your LCs. And that you continue to share your "gifts" as they come with us

take care,

Nick

Thanks so much for the kind words Nick! Call it the Hawaiian influence in me, but I really enjoy sharing the experience...or "talk story" as they would say. It's been a blast and writing about it is a great way to relive the thrill again. Glad you enjoyed it. More to come.

Don, Don, Don....
Until next time, God Bless!
Robert
<><

Wish you coulda made it man! I can only imagine the hurt you woulda put on those fish. Pretty amazing stuff. Well, just like we discussed, work was bound to come so it looks like my run is over for a couple of days...not that I'm complaining considering how many shots I got over the last week. Gotta pay for all the lost LCs somehow, eh? Let me know when you're in the neighborhood and maybe I'll sneak away from my computer for a quick session.

Sir Dan! We have shared some incredible experiences over the last couple of years, but I must say, that has gotta go right to the top of the list...fishing wise. I told Ken, my definition of EPIC, is when everyone gets fish, and boy did we...and continue to. I wish you guys the best of luck this weekend. I hope the legal counts go through the roof for all of you. GO GET 'EM DANIMAL!!!!:Dancing Banana:

YOU ARE ON FIRE.... Major props Don. :Applause:

Thanks DR! Curtains down, but the encore to come!

Hope you get a chance to get out there soon. Just keep in mind, we've all had a lot of the flip side of what I just got to experience. There are a lot more skunk trips than successful ones. Don't get discouraged if it does happen right out of the gate. Keep it up and all those stripes help make this kind of experience that much sweeter. Thanks for the kind words and best of luck out there!

Getting a surf legal flattie is not an easy task. To assume that I can go out there and nail one is pretty much asking too much...especially considering I only landed 6 all of last year, which I am incredibly thankful for. I always have high hopes, but leave it at that...hopes, not expectations.

So, after my four straight days of fishing, I was beginning to get the tell tale signs that my wife had enough of my morning disappearing acts into the surf...short answers, not asking how things went or if I caught anything, etc. I figured, "Oh well, a bite like that doesn't come around often, if at all. It was well worth any grief I'm gonna get for skipping out for a few hours".:Rolls Eyes: We still had a great mini-vacation and I don't really plan on fishing the weekend, so time should heal quickly. Well, I guess things healed quicker than I thought. My wife had been saying that we should have Nate (bbqsushi) and his family over for dinner for a couple of weeks now. Yesterday, while we were making our grocery list for the week, she says, "We should eat more fish when we cook dinner. How about we pick up some salmon or something?" I reply, "Well, I know where I can probably get some halibut"...more as a joke than anything. To my complete shock:Shocked:, she replies, "Well, why don't you go Saturday and catch us some? We can invite Nate and Nori over for dinner." I remind her that we have to take the kids to swim lessons Saturday morning and there wouldn't be enough time to get over to the honey hole and score. She replies, "Well, then go tomorrow. You don't have to work." This is the same person that was not happy about my fishing the day before and I'm about to spit out a smart reply when sanity kicks in and I just go with it. "Ok, let's get a hold of Nate and see if they're available for dinner and I'll see if I can catch some." No pressure, right...PFFFFTTTTT!:Rolls Eyes:

So, I text Nate and his wife and instead of a reply, I catch his post to my original report...

Halibut sashimi on Saturday.
Which is why I immediately replied to him not to jinx it. So, I get the car packed up this morning, including an ice chest and stop by the local market and pick up some ice. As I'm dumping the ice in the chest, I'm thinking, "Talk about jinxing it. What the hell am I doing? Man, I'm just asking to get skunked."

Last night, I had seen a post to my first report by Kelly (remington) and see that he is planning on hitting the spot as well. I sent him a PM that I'll see him there but he had already gone to sleep by that time. So, when I pull into the parking lot, I see a truck there with a couple of guys gearing up and figure it's him. I get geared up and make it down to the beach just before him. It's still dark and, although I was pretty sure it was him, he had no idea I was coming. He and his friend, Kenichi, start working just down swell from me and in the wee bit of light that we have, I see Kelly draw first blood. Shortly after, I get my first short of the day. As I'm chucking the little feller back, I see Curtis, another of Kelly's friends that I fished with on Tuesday, walking up to get started. We all start digging in and I start nailing the shorts. After 3 shorts, Kelly finally comes to investigate and realizes it's me that had been monopolizing the main honey hole. I finally lay into a good fish and yell to Curtis down the beach, "Get over here!" I think he thought I was gonna ask for help, but I told him to start casting in the hole. His reply is that he doesn't want to take my spot and I tell him, "No worries! We can all work the spot if we just parallel each other." As he starts working it, my fish finds it's way to the kelp and wins his freedom. I nail a couple of more shorts and I see Curtis dump a couple of nice fish. Finally he gets one to stick and beaches a nice 23.5" legal. I told Kelly to go for it and work the hole too, but from our angle we weren't getting much love. He moves a little closer to Curtis' position and sure enough goes bendo. After a short battle, he beaches a healthy 25ish" legal. I'm thinking, "Well, there's legals to be had here, but I just gotta be thankful that I got a green light to come out and that I've caught some fish." I get up to 6 shorts but still no legal and we start casting a little farther, over the kelp barrier in front of us. Kelly is getting bit but the fish aren't sticking. As we're casting and chatting, I finally get a grab. I swing and feel bendo for a split second before it unbuttons. I give the LC a pause and one crank and, sure enough, he comes back on. Fortunately, this fish finds it's way over through the kelp and I get a glimpse of my prize. After a few in's and out's with the surge, I get a nice 26ish"(call it 25.75") legal on the beach. I don't keep fish normally, so after some measurements and picts, and just out of shear habit, I take the fish and get ready to release it. All I took is one step and I realize what a mistake I'm about to make!:EyePop::Embarrassed: I get the fish buried and marked and continue to work. Curtis lays into another legal in the form of a 22.25" fish. Kelly and I keep working the long casts and I get another good take. I'm high sticking this fish trying to get it through the kelp but it gets hung up and I end up dumping what felt like another legal. Two casts later, BAM, again feeling a solid fish on the end of my line. I start the gauntlet but, again, I get derailed by the kelp. Two more fish that might have gone legal in the fish story column, but I'm not feeling bad about it at all considering I just fulfilled my husbandly duties of bringing home the bacon, so to speak.:Big Grin:

From that point, things hit a lull. Kelly has to leave and I take my fish to the truck to put it on ice. We say our goodbyes and I start walking to a spot down the beach where we had taken some hits earlier in the week and where Dan and Kelly had scored a couple legals. A few casts in, I get my 7th short of the morning. A few more casts and I hang a nice one. I only have him on for a few seconds before the hook pulls...again. No worries, just keep casting. A few more casts and I get hung on another nice fish. As I get him close to the skinny, I get a glimpse of him in the swell. Looks to be about a 23ish" fish, but definitely legal. He takes a short burst and POOF...buh bye!:Rolls Eyes: Oh well, more fish stories. Three more casts and I finally get a fish to stick, only it come up a couple inches short. A few casts later, as I'm burning in the lure to make another cast, I get hung about ten feet out in front of me. This fish is fighting a little differently and I see a silver flash in the swell. I get it in the skinny and see that I had foul-hooked an 18" bean. I here that familiar voice in my head saying..."better lucky than good." After working the spot for another 15 minutes or so, I decide to call it a session...COMPLETELY satisfied and INCREDIBLY thankful that I got the fish I came down here for.

Total count:
me - (8) shorts, (1) 25.75" legal, (1) 18" corbina
Kelly - 25" legal, ? shorts
Curtis - 23.5" legal, 22.25" legal, ? shorts

Kelly and Curtis, it was awesome fishing with you guys again. Congrats on your legals and hope you guys lay into more this weekend. Kenichi, it was a pleasure meeting and chatting with you. This weekend will be that magical session that scores you that first surf legal!

Kelly with his prize of the morning. Check out the herring that it coughed up at the bottom of the picture. It was still very much alive and Kelly actually threw it back in the water and it swam away.

Thanks Daniel. Been very fortunate with a great bite coinciding with some free time to go get 'em. Don't think I can sustain this kinda pace all year, so I doubt I have 14 more legals under my belt, but it'll be a heck of a ride tryin' to get there! Hope to see you out there again soon!

No problem! Always a pleasure having you and the family over. I think it's hit a lull and the time has come to put down the rods and get back on the mtn bikes! Although, maybe we could convince the wives to go have a picnic dinner on the beach...with rods in hand, of course.

Nice fishing !!!

"WWO, come on down! You're the next contestant in the bite is right!" I was actually hoping you'd take a little breather from all that remodeling and get in on some of the action Bill. I know, I know...priorities first. Well, we've missed you out there and would welcome a visit from some of our northern brothers. It is quite a trek though and I wish I could say its a "for sure thing", but it is fishing...although for a nice stretch it was straight up catching. :Big Smile: Hope to see you again soon man!

Wow, what a great two week run for S.W.A.T. You boys really took it to the Flatties.
I was out of town and was going nuts every time my phone went off with another legal Halibut update.
The fish count was simply amazing... Looks like I will be the one doing the chasing on the Leader Board this year. :Envious:
Nice job getting everyone involved in the hot bite Don and especially keeping constantly updated on the battlefront. :Big Grin:
Catching fish is always a bonus, but it looks like S.W.A.T. made quite a few new friends out there too.
