Hey gentlemen. Sunday was quite the adventure starting with 2 DEAD batteries! Grrrrrrrrr

Anyways, after a "Quick" 2 hour charge, I was off with my buddy Scott, and my Bro-in-law.

The sea was as flat as u could wish for. It was so nice to open up my boat for the first time! Got to the spot in 10 minutes from HH. 1st stop, Eva. Eva wasn't puttin out at all. :|
I think we managed 1 cali.

http://i96.photobucket.com/albums/l191/gregmadrigal/P9221056.jpg

We actually started getting excited when we got the mack attack! I did haul in this beast of a macky. He was pretty fun on my 1st run with my $112.00 Ebay Calcutta 200, $29.00 Bass Pro Shop-special Ugly stick bass rod, and 15lb SpiderWire braid.

http://i96.photobucket.com/albums/l191/gregmadrigal/P9221054.jpg

After lunch we decided to beat the wind chop in. Thank Gosh I did, cuz it got pretty nasty by 3pm. We headed to the L.B. Break wall. The water changed to Mississippi mud-brown color about 1/2 mile from the wall. YUCK!
There was so much S%^t floating around in the ocean from the storm, it was crazy.

We saw floating:
A football
a dead baby dog(sea lion)
12 Spray paint cans
Lots of weird foliage(not yer typical seaweed or kelp)
A backpack
All manners of plastic (some of which we recovered when possible)

Fortunately 4 us, this crap and water color didn't seem to bother the fish.
We used mostly the Gulp! baits again, and Scott used some lure he bought at the O.C. Fair that worked KILLER. It was basically a smokey-opaque jerk bait like the Gulp! bait I was using...See the pattern here?
Here was the funkodelic catch of the day. Paul with his urchin on a KFC, Yes KFC chicken, bait. He also caught a cali and some mack on same said chicken bait! (That would be Original Recipe if you're taking notes.)

http://i96.photobucket.com/albums/l191/gregmadrigal/P9231059.jpg

We fished outside for not much, then inside for a steady pic on calicos.

http://i96.photobucket.com/albums/l191/gregmadrigal/P9231057.jpg

We moved back outside to a steady pick on mo calis, boneys, cudas-babies, and mack attack.

Me with a bonita that was FUNNNNN. He slammed me hard and I set the hook just as fast and it was ONNNNN for a nice fight. I really like the drag on this Calcutta.

Scott with his first barry.
http://i96.photobucket.com/albums/l191/gregmadrigal/P9231061.jpg

Paul with his first barry, caught on the 6lb trout outfit. It's a 5' U/L Ugly Stick, a Shimano Symetre 7500.
http://i96.photobucket.com/albums/l191/gregmadrigal/P9231065.jpg

On the way in I was going a wee bit too fast, hit a rogue wave, and was almost thrown outta the boat as it damn near capsized, or at least it felt like it did. So, I slowed down and learned to expect the unexpected out here! :titanic:

Tight lies all,

Nice report Greg!
That's an interesting plastic you're fishing with. It looks like it has a real split tail. You should report on it "Japan Ron" style with pics and analysis of the action!!

Macs, bonitos, Barely-cudas on light line is always a blast!!

FJ, YOU asked for it, YOU get it! Hre it is JapanRon Style! :D

Per the instructions from Mike Gardner, a famous local bass guide, you must use a darthead leadhead to give the jerkbait the correct action on the fall.
http://i96.photobucket.com/albums/l191/gregmadrigal/P9241067.jpg

At the Longfin in Orange there are Owner, and some no-name brand dartheads. I prefer the no names on the bottom cuz the Owner barb doesn't hold the baits after a while. At 6.99/bag of 5, these are not the cheapest baits, but once the fish bite em, they don't spit em! This = mo fish!

Properly rigged, the hook will protrude from the slit in the bottom os the bait. I like to use a 1/4 oz. head but would advise the 3/8oz if using heavy line or fish are deep.

Indeed, many of the strikes are on the fall, but I would say the majority have been on a slow to med. retrieve. All local species seem to like it.

I have had equal luck on the Nuclear Chicken color,http://i96.photobucket.com/albums/l191/gregmadrigal/P9241066.jpg
and the Anchovy color.
http://i96.photobucket.com/albums/l191/gregmadrigal/P9241068.jpg

I have also done well on the Camo color.
http://i96.photobucket.com/albums/l191/gregmadrigal/P9241071.jpg

I also use the shrimp which the calis will maul at the right times.

http://i96.photobucket.com/albums/l191/gregmadrigal/P9241069.jpg

Notice I keep my old good baits in the zip-loc orig. bags. If you do not, these baits will dry up into a hard useless chunk of plastic. Its tough to even recover the dang leadhead!

Good luck!

Hi Greg Madrigal,

Great thread/post/report/pics. Looks like you had pretty good fishing. Thanks for the extra work on the plastics. Great information. Learned something.

I wish I could find a plastic that didn't have the Gulp stuff in it as I think the design is special and a winner itself. Another plastic that the Bass Pro guys use and I believe is a Japanese compnay ......Kinami .... which has a similar design in one of their models of a swimbait body similar to the Gulp Shad.

thanks,

JapanRon

Hi ymin72,

Now now ..... let's not feel bad about having our only option the moo-moos. Even once the pros and cons have been weighed in the favor of both moo-moo and then PBs ..... rest assured ..... your time on the moo-moos will ...... if you've applied yourself ...... stand you in good stead for the time when you have your own float!

Just like all the Bass Pros say ...... nothing ..... absolutely nothing is a substitue or better than ........... TIME ON THE WATER. That's moo-moo, PB, yak, or tube!!

Await your next report,

JapanRon

does it matter if the hook come out on the bottom side of the plastic or on the top side of the plastic?? looking at your pics you have it coming out of the botton ( where the slit is), but I saw a couple of videos on youtube, they have it coming out of the top. now I am totally :? :? :? :? :? :? :?: :?: :?:

Well Justonemore, I never actually thought about that, but u can bet I'll try it next time! :D

I guess it just made sense that the hook was partially covered by the "flaps" on either side of it. The more I think about it, I suspect the way I'm doing it it right....Well, it works anyhow!

what if there is no "flap" to hide the hook, where would you put the hook, top side or bottom side??

thanks for your input

Justonemore- These particular baits(and most that I know of) are symmetrical, so it doesn't matter all that much which side you put it on.

So I'm not sure exactly what ur trying to do, but if it is whether or not the hook faces up or down, the location of the eye ensures that the hook ALWAYS faces up when retrieving.

I think you can buy ones that make the hook point down.

B/C- Sat Sat Sat!!!!! It's a kiddie deale-O tho.

I'm thinking about joining the Pirates and HittOn at Pyramid tho!

Don't you mean Hitts0n with an s, and a 0 (zero) as in, "Hitts0n caught zero fish the last time I fished with him."

I used to fish Bass Assassins all the time rigged the same way you do these shads. Never occurred to me to rig them like a swimbait????

JapanRon - Have you ever fished Bass Assassins in the salt??? I might if I get out locally soon ....

Nice report and pics,

No it doesnt matter which way you set up the flukes on the darthead, it swims the same either way. I norm fish them with the slits down and thats how ive been shown from the guys i fish with but again it doesnt matter.

Jerk shads kick *** but I think that with the slits facing down it has better action when ya jerk it............anyhow that's how I use them. :D
