Nick and I figured we would try a (potentially) new AO this week... the Ventura Harbor area. He had been talking to people around the area and had heard of "massive" amounts of halibut being pulled... pancakes AND legals! So, I loaded up the Tahoe on Friday the 25th to do a little recon before our joint session on Monday the 28th. I was on the sand at 6:00am... it was quite cold, but the conditions weren't bad. The beach was mine... not another soul in sight. Time to go to work!
I started on the beach side, in between the 2 jetties and began throwing the LC. The waves were only a couple feet, but I noticed they were breaking way out there. I threw for almost 3 hours and nothing more than 2 little strikes that didn't hook up. I decided to put away the LC and try my C-rig with a Gulp! bloodworm on the south side of the jetty. On my first cast, I hooked up on a decent sized perch... maybe 7-8". But I've been spoiled by our new AO, aka The Pig Pen, so any perch under 15" was just a nuisance! I take a quick pic of my skunkbuster and start fishing again. By this time, I notice there are about 6-7 other anglers on the same stretch of beach as me. I love the looks I get as I walk by with my skully balaclava! Priceless.
I head back over to in between the jetties, only to be greeted by 50+ surfers lining the entire beach. Guess I can't throw there... wouldn't want to hook up on a surfer! So I make my way to the Mother's Beach just north of the jetty, but south of the harbor. The waves are maybe 3" tall... no tidal movement. I figure, "yeah... nothing in here." On my first cast, I hook up on something small. I quickly reel in a 3" sculpin. No need for a picture... be gone! I continue to throw for another 30 mins in this area and decide to head to the harbor.
I make my way down the rocks and start fan casting. I end up with only 2 hookups in about a 2 hour period... big hits too. But as soon as I hooked up and my line started peeling, whatever it was lodged themselves on whatever structure is in the harbor. I tried to wait them out and muscle them out, but ended up most likely ripping the hook from their lips instead. Oh well. By this time, it's almost 1:00... I inform Nick of the lack of fish in the area, despite my trying every nch of the place, but we still decide to come back and try on Monday. Time to get back home to pick up the kids from school.
