View Full Version : Dealing with waves again at NPB

Waves were even worse last night than on Tuesday, a 2oz surf weight
was getting dragged all the way back in with the bigger sets, so had to
time casting between sets to get any action.

Went an hour with lots of bites but no hookup, then finally broke the skunk
on a little perch (is this a juvenile BSP or something else?). Got a second
more decent BSP on my 2nd to last cast of the day as the sun went down.

Hoping to find calmer waters on Saturday morning and do some active lure
fishing and possibly some bait and wait with squid.

Again, nice job braving the elements. That first one looks like a walleye perch. There are some nice troughs in that area which have been known to hold some pig bsp and the rare halibut. The weekend looks much nicer, especially from grey light to about 9:00 am ish. Maybe I will venture out there for old times sake.

Yeah I have caught BSPs in the 13-15" range closer to the santa ana river mouth outlet on high tides
I have seen other people get halibut but I have yet to catch my first.

This is also where I caught my PB bat ray

I am gonna shoot for early morning into the start of HT before weekend errands call my name heh
Try to find a surfer free or low volume area which can sometimes be tough.

Perseverance .... way to hang in there during the tough conditions!
WTG ... for landing a couple of different species, and Ken was correct .... that was a Walleye Perch.

Thanx for the fish report!

Hey Slick,
I was in that area from around noon-3pm on Thursday. I fished from the channel to the river mouth & back. I caught 3 tiny BSP & my 1st Halibut from the beach! Try using a smaller LC. I was throw'n the LC110 & got nothn'n. I got all 4 fish on the LC65. The Halibut spit up 4 or 5 tiny baitfish when I beached it.
Good Luck,
