Three surf sessions this past weekend...

Saturday 10/12 - 6:15 - 8:30am
Sunday 10/13 - 6:30 - 11:30am
Monday 10/14 - 6:15am - 9:00am

Saturday morning, I hit the surf with Don (Bachiboy) and Ken (Skunked4Life).
I only had a couple of hours to fish and could manage only one little Yellow Fin Croaker.
Ken didn't do too well either, but the Hot Stick of the morning was Don. Nailing TWO beautiful Calico Bass. :Envious:
Not only did I barely escaped the Skunk... Poseidon sent a couple of back to back rogue waves that took me under for about 3-5 seconds...
Don and Ken had a good laugh at my expense... laugh it up boys, you won't see that very often, lol  Lt. Bones and I have been fishing together for the past 5 plus years and he has never seen me go under. But I've seen him go under plenty of times, hehe
Luckily, the Daiwa Lexa was working just fine after the drenching and I didn't need to go to the back-up reel.
As a matter of fact, I used the same reel for all three sessions without any mechanical issues. Daiwa sure makes some great reels. :Thumbs Up:

Sunday, Lt. Bones (Mike) and I went looking for Ghosts...
We hit three different A.O's from grey light to about noon, but couldn't find them.
We did find plenty of Perch and Yellow Fin Croakers though... I call the YFC's Croakers of the "wrong" kind. lol

Check this out, after lunch, Nikka asked us if we want to jump in the restaurant's pool, hang out and relax.
This place encourages their guest to swim in their heated pool and relax around the fire pit... very cool!

Monday, I originally planned on going into the office... But was feeling a little unfulfilled with the lack of quality catches from the previous two days... Decided to play hooky from work and hit the surf instead. I hope my "Boss" doesn't find out... he's kind of a jerk, lol

Got to the spot around 6:00am and was on my Blackberry sending out some emails to let the staff know that I won't be coming into work today when I hear somebody tapping on the car window. :Surprised:
What a surprise, it was my S.W.A.T. Brother, SP Dan aka the Danimal. :Big Grin:
We chatted a bit and decided to hit the enemy from opposite angles. He would hit the closest beach and I will hike just a bit further and drop into the LZ around the next point. As we found out later... we BOTH made the right call... :Dancing Banana: Check out Dan's successful report!

While walking to the spot... I come across this critter laying on the side of the road with no signs of trauma. I was hoping that it was only taking a nap and nudged it with the butt of my rod... no movement, bummer...
http://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r135/Wingnut32566/Wingnut%2012/Wingnut%2013/SWAT1029-6.jpg (http://s143.photobucket.com/user/Wingnut32566/media/Wingnut%2012/Wingnut%2013/SWAT1029-6.jpg.html)

Got down to the spot and the conditions were absolutely gorgeous... The swells were so flat, it was almost lake like.
Gin clear water with little salad and there were bait fish dimpling on the surface and birds working close to the surf line.
My Spidey senses were tingling as I started working the closest kelp line...

Now, I hate telling lost fish stories, because everybody's got one... so I'll make this quick, It'll be less painful for me anyway, lol
10 minutes into the grey light and the S.W.A.T. LC gets rocked! At first, I thought I had one brute of a Calico on the line because I was working so close to the edge of the kelp line, but this Beast was way too strong... :EyePop: Five minutes into the battle and I finally see some color in the surf... and it confirmed that I was indeed, on a Ghost Protocol... a big White Sea Bass probably between 35-40 inches. I took my time working it slowly, getting it closer and closer to the beach. The fish was pretty tired out at this point... but there were no swells whatsoever to help me wash this fish on the sand... I get it into knee deep surf and I get a clear look at the hook position... I had the fish on the lip by one barb on the tail hook... Before my brain could send the message to my hands to hurry up and beach this thing... the hook popped loose and I see the body of the massive silver fish slowly rolled over and disappeared into the surf...

I quickly checked the hooks on the S.W.A.T. LC... no bent hooks and still sharp as ever...
I didn't waste any time mourning that fish... what is gone, is gone and went right back to fan casting the area.
The Grey Ghosts never travels alone... if there's one in the area, you can bet there are more in the vicinity!
Not more than 10 minutes passes by... and the S.W.A.T. LC gets hammered again...

The fish took off to the right...
http://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r135/Wingnut32566/Wingnut%2012/Wingnut%2013/SWAT1045-6.jpg (http://s143.photobucket.com/user/Wingnut32566/media/Wingnut%2012/Wingnut%2013/SWAT1045-6.jpg.html)

Then to the left...
http://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r135/Wingnut32566/Wingnut%2012/Wingnut%2013/SWAT1044-4.jpg (http://s143.photobucket.com/user/Wingnut32566/media/Wingnut%2012/Wingnut%2013/SWAT1044-4.jpg.html)

Then it tried heading straight into the kelp... that's not gonna happen...
http://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r135/Wingnut32566/Wingnut%2012/Wingnut%2013/SWAT1043-4.jpg (http://s143.photobucket.com/user/Wingnut32566/media/Wingnut%2012/Wingnut%2013/SWAT1043-4.jpg.html)

This time... a much happier ending...
This fish was no where close to the caliber of the one I lost earlier, but definitely helps to cool the sting a little.
Guess what the secret ingredient will be for the Iron Chef's next dish?

The first WSB caught on the S.W.A.T. LC. :Envious:
http://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r135/Wingnut32566/Wingnut%2012/Wingnut%2013/SWAT1037-4.jpg (http://s143.photobucket.com/user/Wingnut32566/media/Wingnut%2012/Wingnut%2013/SWAT1037-4.jpg.html)

The final act of defiance from the K.I.A. Ghost.
http://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r135/Wingnut32566/Wingnut%2012/Wingnut%2013/SWAT1038-3.jpg (http://s143.photobucket.com/user/Wingnut32566/media/Wingnut%2012/Wingnut%2013/SWAT1038-3.jpg.html)

The swells were so flat... amazing...
http://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r135/Wingnut32566/Wingnut%2012/Wingnut%2013/SWAT1053-4.jpg (http://s143.photobucket.com/user/Wingnut32566/media/Wingnut%2012/Wingnut%2013/SWAT1053-4.jpg.html)

Crystal clear water... I could see lots of movement in the kelp... bait fish being chased.
http://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r135/Wingnut32566/Wingnut%2012/Wingnut%2013/SWAT1048-5.jpg (http://s143.photobucket.com/user/Wingnut32566/media/Wingnut%2012/Wingnut%2013/SWAT1048-5.jpg.html)

Got a few solid hits working the LC along the edge of the kelp line. The flat swells allowed me to wade up to my chest or more and casting farther into the kelp. :Big Grin:
http://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r135/Wingnut32566/Wingnut%2012/Wingnut%2013/SWAT1047-5.jpg (http://s143.photobucket.com/user/Wingnut32566/media/Wingnut%2012/Wingnut%2013/SWAT1047-5.jpg.html)

Keeping the Kill close to me in the surf...
http://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r135/Wingnut32566/Wingnut%2012/Wingnut%2013/SWAT1051-1.jpg (http://s143.photobucket.com/user/Wingnut32566/media/Wingnut%2012/Wingnut%2013/SWAT1051-1.jpg.html)

Nothing except for a small Calico bass for the next hour from the surf so I decided to hop on the rocks for a bit...
http://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r135/Wingnut32566/Wingnut%2012/Wingnut%2013/SWAT1040-3.jpg (http://s143.photobucket.com/user/Wingnut32566/media/Wingnut%2012/Wingnut%2013/SWAT1040-3.jpg.html)

Got a couple of chunky Calico Bass.
http://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r135/Wingnut32566/Wingnut%2012/Wingnut%2013/SWAT1031-6.jpg (http://s143.photobucket.com/user/Wingnut32566/media/Wingnut%2012/Wingnut%2013/SWAT1031-6.jpg.html)

Then I got rocked again by ANOTHER big White Sea Bass...
So cool seeing the fish from up on the rocks, rush the LC and just like a Striper, hitting the lure head first! Shook its head a few times and taking off at blistering speed. :EyePop:
I had no choice but to put extra pressure on the fish because of the extreme close proximity of the kelp and boiler rocks. The hook eventually tore loose...
Didn't want to be the first to report a lost S.W.A.T. LC...
Hooked THREE Ghosts and landed only ONE. Disappointed, but I guess it's better than ZERO...

Have a blessed week everybody!

Wow Commander!!!

First, I would like to point out that I have fished with you half a dozen times and seen you dunked twice. You are batting .333 with me.

Second, sometimes, the "lost fish" stories are better than the no fish stories. Keep 'em coming. You got beach cred so we all believe you.

Third, isn't it great to play hooky and fish on a weekday? I miss those days... Let me know next time you take a work day off. Maybe I will join you.

Fourth, AMAZING job on the WSB!!!!! Now you have multiple legals for this year! The only one. Heck, I am still super excited about the 21.5" I caught. Can't imagine how a 30 incher feels! The way you work every nook and cranny, now I see why you are the zen master!

Thanks for allowing me to witness your baptism Saturday. For the record, I only laughed waaayyy later. When it happened, I almost pooped my pants 'cause I thought that you were going to be swept into the deep blue.

See you soon.

Bummer about the lost beast but at least you landed 1 for the IronChef to work her culinary magic on!:Big Smile:
Way to break in the new LC and add to the species landed on it list.

WTG on the legal WSB. Bait boats catching squid right out front of Rat last night. Reports of squid off Angels Gate in 90' of water also. With all this calamari around there should be some Tanker WSB around too. If anyone could catch a tanker say 40 lbs plus from shore it would most likely be a SWAT crew. Bill Ernst got his 94 lb 6' record in shallow water at Malibu.

Sir,

It was great to be able to get back out there with you and Ken. Nice pigs on the recon session with Bones. He and I have been talking about some good looking spots around the coast that we'd like to try. Sounds like you made your rounds that day. Nice going on the legal seabass...one outta three ain't bad. Better than the freakin Dodger's batting average with men in scoring position. Guess those World Series tickets are a bit of a longshot.:Rolls Eyes: I was hoping that the WSB would hang around an extra day but I guess they call them ghosts for a reason, eh? Doesn't help that I go in there at 10am...not that Daniel found them at greylight either. Still, there was a TON of life there so maybe this weekend those basstages will move back in. GO GET EM!!!!

Heading south for the weekend with my family and Nate's family. Hoping to get this guy inducted!

Congrats on the legal biscuit!!!

Three days of ghost recon and on the final day... success! :Thumbs Up:
Way to get em :Big Grin: One out of three isn't bad considering all that hazardous structure you had to deal with and the limitations of being stuck on land.
I was able to get out there yesterday and was thinking about what I would do if I happened to hookup to a big wsb. It could be one nerve-wracking fight for sure!
I wasn't able to find them but as Don said, there was tons of life in the area and lots of activity.
Congrats on all of the fine catches :Big Grin:

Way to get em :Big Grin: One out of three isn't bad considering all that hazardous structure you had to deal with and the limitations of being stuck on land.
I was able to get out there yesterday and was thinking about what I would do if I happened to hookup to a big wsb. It could be one nerve-wracking fight for sure!
I wasn't able to find them but as Don said, there was tons of life in the area and lots of activity.
Congrats on all of the fine catches :Big Grin:

That A.O. can be finicky sometimes... I've seen perfect conditions there and no fish, then at times when conditions aren't so great, it is loaded with fish. :Surprised:
It's all about the timing and I've been pretty lucky with my timing.
See you at the S.W.A.T. Christmas party.

Nice work on the ghost Commander! You definitely have that place dialed in. That spot hasn't produced much for me this year and has usually ended in frustration and sore legs LOL. Nice job out there. Tess is still looking for number 2.
Hey Jason, Steve and Eddie found them today... :Secret:
Yeah, like I said previously, that A.O. can be very difficult at times... takes a lot of patience.
I'll see you and Tess at the S.W.A.T. Xmas party, if not before... :Big Grin:

The new LC looks great commander. I was trying but couldn't win one at HG5. :Crying:
I took the girlfriend to that restaurant a few month ago and it was great.
I haven't hit the surf in months, have to dust the cobwebs off my waders.

Dude, you barely fished at HG5, I think you spent most of your time eating bro.

Anytime you're ready to get in the surf, let me know.
