Drifting for Rockfish At The 4 Sisters!

Tuesday 09/18
Went on a ½-day PM trip out of Pierpoint Landing. Fished the Southern Cal. Collin was the skipper, with Stan on deck, and Ed in the galley. Fished our local waters, i.e. 4 Sisters Rigs for Rockfish, Sculpin, and Bass. Had only 8 anglers. Love those lite loads ….. sorry Collin.
Note: Countdown: September 22nd will be the second FREE FISHING DAY this year for everyone in California. That’s 2 days away. It would be a great day to get a non-angler out on the water while saving a little cash ………. Especially a group or big family trip!
Lobster Season Opener Get ready for a zillion threads on the bugs!! (See 09/19 asides) California Spiny Lobster season starts Saturday the 29 of September …….. Midnight!?. That’s 10 days away. Limit is 7 of the creatures ……… you’ve measured with your handy-dandy, correct, double checked scale! No you can’t use just any measure ….. in a pinch …. heh heh heh !!
Target Fish:Bocaccio, Reds, and Whatever
Short Report- Tuesday 09/18
Our 8 anglers caught 8 Bocaccio, 43 Rockfish (including: Reds and Chuckleheads), 11 Whitefish, and one Sheephead. Also …..lots of Starries …. that didn’t make the count! ha ha A number of Barberpoles were in the rockfish count too!! Grade of fish was good on the Salmon Grouper.
Finbait consisted of Sardines with no Anchovies in the mix. Had packs of frozen Squid for cut bait too.
AM run averaged about six fish per angler. Good bunch of fish tacos.

Salmon Grouper
The jackpot fish was a Bocaccio. A Salmon Grouper was the winner today. The near 4-lb fish was caught on bait …….. the bait of choice….. Sardine!!

Headed straight out to the rigs and set up for Rockfish. Started at 44 fathoms …. Yes 44 fathoms or 44 x’s 6 = 264 FEET. Not unexpected !! The way the fishery is presently, with the cold water and all, we’ll be fishing for Rockfish in the 180~240 foot range …… if not deeper so some local skippers.

First Stop

Round 1 Most of the guys were fishing the ol’ dropper-loop setup. I fished my plastics with a SKUNK for my efforts. I used nothing but plastics ….. 5~5 ½ inch models to keep the dinks away!!! We were fishing around 240~260 feet wherever we moved. Water was around 63 degrees which is about what it is all around the ‘Shoe’ at this point. Fished on the drift.
Lots of action on both Sardines and cut Squid. First thing we did was load up on the Salmon Grouper. Ya …. everyone (but me) using their &$*@ bait dropped down and hooked a Salmon Grouper in seconds. They then drop down again and someone catches one that is counted as MY one fish LIMIT …. due to boat limits. This really …… see asides.
Second Stop
Round 2 With our only hooking Salmon Grouper, we quickly moved off the spot and fished a little shallower (maybe 240 feet or so) in the search for Reds (Vermillion Rockfish) and other assorted deep-water species. Everyone but me used the ol’ dropper-loop rig and 8 ounces of weight. Current was pretty strong and I don’t know if we ever hit bottom. We again fished on the drift and made a number of runs on different spots within the central and westerly side of the rigs grouping.
Third Stop
Round 3 We moved yet a little closer but still within a proximity to the rigs. Water was yet a little shallower but never below 200. We did anchor one time in this area but that stop was nothing special on the catching side of things. As with the other two rounds ….. catching was pretty steady …. If a bit scratchy. Lots of Starries to keep those arms limbered up!
Conditions: Water visibility was around 10~15 feet. Air temp stayed in the 70º~75º range until the afternoon cooling, with the breeze. Stayed sunny all afternoon. Check out the graphics for additional weather and water conditions.

Not using Squid strips and not using the Gulp-like scented baits ……… but going ‘plastic only’ is asking for a potential skunk on a ½-day moo-moo trip in present conditions with the distance to the rigs. Fishing in 280 feet ain’t easy either! Whatever … I again tasted the ‘agony of defeat’ !!
Having had success with the 5~6-inch FT’s recently on a number of species, I fished those baits the entire trip. Got plenty of tail-grabs for small fish but didn’t get a single true hit nor did the rod load up even one time!! Switched from the usual red to green to purple to brown to of no avail. Leadheads used were all either 5/0 or 6/0, 2oz unpainted models. Tried both the Carolina and Texas rigs, using sliding-egg sinkers, each rig with a combined weight of 5~6ozs.
Still …………… I had a good time trying various things that I wouldn’t try with more people on the boat. Wish we had anchored more in shallower water but …….. That’s when plastics are often most effective IMNSHO.

Tuesday’s Conditions
Fishing Grounds: Had only one moo-moo and fishing PBers sighted were two maybe three hugging the rigs. Water had a pretty good chop and lots of wind ……… a bit more than expected for an afternoon run this time of year!! Could we be in for an early Fall.
Wild Creatures: Saw a few Sealions. Had some Terns, Pelicans, and Seagulls hanging around waiting for dinner.

Aside:
Winter SchedulesBe aware that some landings are already in their Winter Schedule for their regular ½ and ¾-day moo-moos. I’m not going to make a list this year so you’ll need to confirm the departure time yourself at the time you make a reservation. You do make reservations don’t you!? With load numbers going south, be advised to make a reservation or you may be wasting some fuel too!!
Another Aside:
Getting the Right Info For Newbies I’m pretty anal so I have a regular routine I usually do when making a reservation. Here’s the stuff that will save you and the office personnel some time.
Ask something like…
Is the (AM/PM ½-day, ¾-day) Turkey going out (tomorrow, Saturday, 6th) ? If yes ….
Make it short and to the point!
“Ok, My is name Elmer Fudd and I want to make a reservation for 1, on the AM run of the Turkey for Tomorrow. My phone number is (666) 666-6666.”
Calling
1) Most importantly- Call at a time when the boats are NOT being loaded so that the office person can answer any question you might want answered with something more than the usual catch-all answer. ‘Yep …. they’re going out’.
2) Making a reservation FIRST puts the office guy in front of the reservation ledger for a precise answer to any question you might give them.
3) If the office person doesn’t ask your telephone number, you can be pretty sure the boat will go out. Don’t be shy about asking how many reservations they have in hand!
If you have doubts about the boat actually going out, call the landing again a little before the office closes in the evening or morning before the trip for the latest info. There will be times when you could not be contacted for …… whatever reason.
Last Aside:
Salmon Grouper With the Bocaccio bag limit at one per angler per day and the boat limit at how many ever licensed anglers are on the boat (moo-moo or PBer alike), there is always going to be a problem …. or kind of a dirty little secret that the DFG is well aware of ………but has not seen fit to address …. IMNSHO …. a positive or realistic manner.
Be you a moo-moo patron or PBer/angler, and while fishing for or at depths where Bocaccio lurk, you’ve pulled up ‘YOUR’ fish (a.k.a. one-fish limit) and then ….. then ….. dropped down again fully aware that you might catch another Bocaccio (instead of your targeted speceies) …… which you cannot keep …. but which may very well die …. even with good intentions and the bladder (not stomach) punctured. Wanna try and deny that one …. And be believed? Ha ha ha
1) The DFG needs to change the limit on this fish. Even if the limit is liberalized only for a portion of the year. Or have a one over and one under OK kind of slot system.
2) Moo-moos need to be more proactive on driving into the skulls of those that know better that they are done when they catch their ‘One’ fish ….. and the boat will not tolerate any attempt to cull to a better sized fish! Some so-called anglers are sneaky and they will try to cull if they’re not watched.
3) Anglers …. greedy and or without a clue …….. need to be taught or educated on fishing different depths or with different bait so as to avoid hooking yet another ‘limited out’ species. Dangle a Sardine in front of a Salmon Grouper and it’s a done deal!! Sheesh !!
The crews of the boats I regularly go on harp, again and again on the trip, on the need for their patrons to bring their baits up and out of the zone where they are sure to catch Bocaccio. What ya gonna do with the greedy or clueless? The only recourse for the skipper is to move the boat away from the area holding the fish! …… Continued in 09/19 report.

Great Day
Had a nice few hours on the water, knew things would be tough and yet got my pre-fishing practice done for the next days’ ¾-day trip. The ½-day boat is a great ride if you’re going to do back-to-back trips in a day or on consecutive days. Thanks guys for the usual effort …… even with so few patrons!

Salmon Grouper With the Bocaccio bag limit at one per angler per day and the boat limit at how many ever licensed anglers are on the boat (moo-moo or PBer alike), there is always going to be a problem …. or kind of a dirty little secret that the DFG is well aware of ………but has not seen fit to address …. IMNSHO …. a positive or realistic manner.
Be you a moo-moo patron or PBer/angler, and while fishing for or at depths where Bocaccio lurk, you’ve pulled up ‘YOUR’ fish (a.k.a. one-fish limit) and then ….. then ….. dropped down again fully aware that you might catch another Bocaccio (instead of your targeted speceies) …… which you cannot keep …. but which may very well die …. even with good intentions and the bladder (not stomach) punctured. Wanna try and deny that one …. And be believed? Ha ha ha
1) The DFG needs to change the limit on this fish. Even if the limit is liberalized only for a portion of the year. Or have a one over and one under OK kind of slot system.
2) Moo-moos need to be more proactive on driving into the skulls of those that know better that they are done when they catch their ‘One’ fish ….. and the boat will not tolerate any attempt to cull to a better sized fish! Some so-called anglers are sneaky and they will try to cull if they’re not watched.
3) Anglers …. greedy and or without a clue …….. need to be taught or educated on fishing different depths or with different bait so as to avoid hooking yet another ‘limited out’ species. Dangle a Sardine in front of a Salmon Grouper and it’s a done deal!! Sheesh !!
The crews of the boats I regularly go on harp, again and again on the trip, on the need for their patrons to bring their baits up and out of the zone where they are sure to catch Bocaccio. What ya gonna do with the greedy or clueless? The only recourse for the skipper is to move the boat away from the area holding the fish! …… Continued in 09/19 report.

Great Day
Had a nice few hours on the water, knew things would be tough and yet got my pre-fishing practice done for the next days’ ¾-day trip. The ½-day boat is a great ride if you’re going to do back-to-back trips in a day or on consecutive days. Thanks guys for the usual effort …… even with so few patrons!
