This new place is just WOW... I mean it's got a treacherous high tide, but it's produced BIG both times I've been there this week.

I started throwing the LC when I got there around 10:00am and within about 10 minutes, hook onto something big near the boilers I was casting to. I started reeling in, but as I was about halfway in, I felt it unbutton and it was gone. I threw again and about 3 minutes later, I snag my LC on one of the boiler rocks. I was pissed... however, every once in awhile I would feel what appeared to be a small twitch on the end of the line. What the hell? I didn't feel a strike and my LC wasn't moving no matter how I tugged. I started thinking, "Hey, maybe this is a fish. I bet it's a rockfish stuck under a rock". I started to muscle him in and soon I had him free of the rocks. I dragged him up on the beach and was ecstatic to find a healthy Cabezon attached to my LC. I texted our fearless leader to confirm and he said it was a Blue-Mouthed Cabezon... rare to pull from the surf. Well, I did! It's a new species for me and obviously my person best! I taped him out at 14.5". Took a series of pics and released him. The skunk was off... again! W00T!

After releasing him... I soon started kicking myself when I realized that I probably should have kept him for the grill tonight. The wife is always giving me crap about catching fish, but never bringing any home. This would've put a sock in it for awhile. So, I started throwing the LC again, near the rocks in hopes of catching another one... didn't happen. I threw for about 45 minutes more and only caught 1 BSP. It was a pretty good sized one... but not huge. I didn't bother taping him out. Quick CPR and he was back in the water.

At this time, I could either keep throwing where I was at... hell, it worked for me 2 days ago when I caught 15 BSP's and it's worked so far today. I could call it quits or move to another spot on the rocks where I thought I might catch a bite. I decided to try a new spot... boy was I glad I did. The first cast... BOOM! I land a 12" BSP. CPR and start to throw again.

Next cast, BOOM... another BSP. And another and another... I hooked onto something on almost every cast. It was crazy. I had definitely found some sort of BSP hole where all of the pigs were hanging out. All in all, I caught 11 BSP that were 12"-15" in about 20 minutes. It was awesome...

The bite started to die down a little... and by a little I mean a BSP on every 10-12th cast. Still pretty awesome. It was after 1:00pm and I was going to have to pick up my kids soon. I had to take a pic of my brand new LC with brand new hooks... all battle scarred from slaying pigs all day (check out how bent the middle hook is).

It was a beautiful day, the fishing was exceptional and I caught something new... couldn't ask for anything more... except my buddy Nick to share it with! Sorry you couldn't make it today brutha... we'll kill it together again soon!

Hey Erik,
Congrats with the new species.
They are indeed rare from the surf and even more so with an LC.
Looked like a beautiful out on the sand.
Thanks for sharing,
Robert

Great report and pictures. Long ago I used to fish the rocks and jetties, I put my bait in the holes and pull those guys out with a drop line. Man you caught a bunch of fishies and had a good time. CPR is cool and now you know where the fish are to catch and have fun again.:Beer Toast:

Lots of life there Erik. Keep hammering it and you'll get that "one" soon enough. Great session and well done on the caby. Like Robert said, that is a rare surf catch that not many have managed.

Awesome job out there!

Nice catch Erik... :Thumbs Up:
In the 5+ years I've been surf fishing, I've only caught 2 Cabbies from the surf, they're quite rare from the sand.
The blue mouth is so cool looking... :Big Grin:

Nice little spot you got there Erik. Those are some quality fish. I have yet to land some kind of rock fish species from the surf. I would love to hook up with a linger, but thats pretty rare around our waters. Would probably have to hit up Big Sur.

Keep hammering that spot while the fishing is good. Hope you catch some dinner for the wifey soon.
