View Full Version : HG5 Closing Statement and Photos... the Best Gets Even Better!

Now that I had a day or so to recover and reflect on the event, I find myself with the same dilemma that I have every year after each event… I don’t even know how or where to start my closing statement… :Envious:
Hunting Giants 5 is in the books, and I have no doubt that it lived up to everyone’s expectations and beyond. This year, we had 306 pre-registered participants and 272 showed up. :Big Grin:
I knew that this year's event would be bigger and better than all the previous ones. There's always a certain degree of stress involved with the planning an event of this magnitude, but honestly, leading up to the day of the event, I was quite a bit more relaxed this year than previous years. Mainly because the trust I had in my support staff. The Guys & Gals of the S.W.A.T. Team. I knew that my Brothers & Sisters had my back all the way and I will thank them properly at the end of this closing statement. :Cool:
So many people to acknowledge and I will spend most of this week making call and sending emails to relay my gratitude to those who were involved in one way or another with this fantastic gathering.
I will tell this story again, like I do every year… so new members will know the history of this event and what kind of a man Dana Rea was. It will also act as a reminder to those who were lucky enough to have known him, to never forget the Man that he was…
Many years ago, Dana (Fisherman 57) had a vision of turning strangers into friends by uniting them through fishing. His simple philosophy of “Family, Friends, Fun & Fishing” were embraced by fishermen of all ages and from all walks of life. Sharing their knowledge and fishing experience with each other in the name of conservation and passing their passion onto the younger generation.
The Hunting Giants event and many others, mostly in the freshwater platform, were planned as a vehicle in which to bring people together for that purpose. I remember when Dana and I put together the first HG event a few years ago. We had about 30 participants that showed up. What we lack in numbers was compensated for the abundant of enthusiasm of those who did join us for that first event. By the time the second HG event rolled around, we doubled the attendance and Dana and I knew that this is a one of a kind event. It had the potential to be the biggest one of its kind, anywhere.
When Dana passed away unexpectedly, it took the wind out of my sail and plans for HG3 were put on the shelf. I honestly did not want go forward with another HG event, even at the urging of fellow S.W.A.T. and other FNN members. Then one day, I received a private message from a young lady and her dad asking me when the next Hunting Giants event will be held. They told me that they had so much fun at the first two and it was the one event they look forward to every year and that it meant a lot to them and their family. The message was sent by Kelly (City Girl) and her father, Tim (City Dad). It dawned on me while reading that message that this was what Dana had envisioned all along. I wasn’t about to let his hard work fade away and his legacy to become a distant memory. It gave me all the motivation I needed to call on my fellow S.W.A.T. members for their help to get the third HG event off the ground.
HG3 and HG4 were spectacular and the attendance numbers grew every year.
As with previous HG events. We actually had many people, members and sponsors alike reaching out to us, asking if they can help out and/or support the event. The willingness of individuals and companies to support our cause, along with the dedication and hard work of my S.W.A.T. Brothers and Sisters, is what makes the HG events the success that you experienced.
The list of people to thank is extensive, and I will try not to miss anybody. But if I do, please forgive me and send me a reminder PM.
I want to thank all the Registered Participants that attended the event. These events have always been about “YOU” and for “YOU.” Thank you for coming out to join us in celebration of Family, Friends, Fun & Fishing in accordance with Dana’s philosophy. I hope that everybody had a great time. I appreciate the support that you have extended to me and the S.W.A.T. Team throughout the years. I know that conditions weren't great and the fishing was mediocre at best, but it didn't seem to bother most of you. Fishing have never been the main attraction of the HG events anyway... neither are the derby trophies and all the nice raffle prizes. Catching fish and winning something nice to take home is only a bonus. :Wink:
Special thanks go out to those of you who went the “extra” mile to donate raffle prizes and contributed to the potluck. Way to “Pay it Forward.” :Applause: This year, we had quite a few participants donating prizes to the raffle, everything from lures to clothing items and gift cards. One particular person caught my attention. As I was checking him in for the event, he handed me a brand new 3rd Grip Fishing Holster. Some of you probably know that the 3rd Grip is no longer being made and the item is very rare and extremely hard to find. I have seen the $24.99 retail item for sale on Ebay for crazy amount of money and being purchased. I handed the 3rd Grip back to him and asked him if he was sure he wants to donate this item and does he know what it is worth? He smiled and said, “Yes, I know… I want to donate it…” Now, there’s a guy that gets it… :Big Grin: Thank you, it made somebody very happy at the raffle. :Razz:
EVERYBODY who held a raffle ticket, went home with a prize... amazing!
How about the potluck?!? Wow, the food was amazing. Baby back ribs, hot dogs, burgers, BBQ chicken, smoked Salmon and Tuna, just about every foods and desserts imaginable laid out for everybody to enjoy. We had S.W.A.T. members coming back in from day and a half boat with fresh Bluefin Tuna for the smoker Saturday morning. I think we had four BBQ grills and a smoker going all at once at one time. I’m sure that we got everybody pretty well fed. Thank you to all those who contributed to the potluck… indeed, sharing is caring. :Big Grin:

Finally… my S.W.A.T. Brothers & Sisters. I’ve already sent each and every one of you a personal PM and text, relaying my gratitude for your support. But I would like to acknowledge all of you here on the board. To give credit where credit is due. Thank you for your personal contributions, donations, time invested and tireless efforts to make this event memorable for all those in attendance. Once again, all I needed to do was to show up on the day of the event and talk into the megaphone, lol I pretty much sat in my office and made phone calls. My job was made easy, by the hard work of those who care about other people’s happiness, more than they care about their own… Thank you for “Getting it”, for “Paying it Forward” and embracing the spirit of a great Man and a great Friend. Dana’s legacy carries on in each and every one of us who chose never to forget. :Big Grin:

Soooo, I was on the beach, there was a ton of free food, 3rd Grips, tons of raffle prizes, the perch were biting...AND I was just handed my brand new st croix casting rod courtesy of the S.W.A.T. Layaway Colonel, and I did not get to partake in any of it. I didn't even have time to eat...BUT...I had SOOOOO MUCH FUN!!!!! If asked to do it again, I would not even hesitate! Love you guys! Big thanks to you Arthur for seeing in me something that I have been searching for all of my life...self worth! The thing that made me most happy was to humbly take over for Steve, who slaved away at the grill all day at hg4. Steve, I hope you got to enjoy this years event. Lastly, I have to apologize to those fnn members that I failed to meet and greet personally after having read your reports here. The same goes to any S.W.A.T. Member that I failed to personally say hi to.
I can't tell you guys how much I enjoyed Saturday!
I am already thinking about what to make (food) for next year's event!

It was a fun day out there Arthur!!! Thanks to you and the rest of the SWAT team for making it happen, you put smiles on 271 other people faces Saturday (not including mine). I was able to add 2 new species to my surf list that I havent been able to do on my local OC beaches. See you next year!

Jr. & I wanted to extend our gratitude again for all your hard work to put this event together year after year.
Along with everyone else who is responsible for making this event a success. This was our 2nd year & again we had a lot of fun. This is a true testament to what Dana worked so hard to achieve...Bless his soul. Everyone coming together to have a great time. I say you did it in style on Saturday & I know Dana is looking down with a big smile knowing his tradition is carrying on. BIG BIG BIG Mahalo bruddahs !!! It was so nice to see all the friendly familiar faces...
Jr. & Alex put on a great cast off in the Jr.casting division... Back & forth so many times. It could of gone either way.
Very exciting.

HG5 is officially in the books!
What an amazing event, throughout the day as I walked the stretches of the beach, I noticed smile after smile.
Everyone was having a good time, no matter what the fish count was.
The raffle prizes were insane, many thanks go out to all of our sponsors for supplying us with some great gear to give away.
The food was also great! We had a variety of dishes everywhere, sorry I didnt get a pic of the egg rolls this year "they flew off the shelves" once again, those eggrolls go quicker than the twinkies that they brought back in stores lol.
Oh man, the bbq grill! Much love to Mikey, Steve, Ken, Mike and whoever else was up there on the grills, the bbq ribs, bbq sausage, hot dogs, burgers, tuna, everything was amazing!
I personally would like to thank you Arthur and Mike for making this event possible. We all know the recon that goes into it, time, preparation and the mula involved, thanks for making it a success.
S.W.A.T, way to step up guys, thanks for all the time and contributions that made this event possible. Lets do it again next year! :D

Arthur.....Just when I though it couldn't get better....It DID!
I'm always amazed what can happen when a bunch of folks decide to make good things happen. Through all of the months of both you and I working on different aspects of the HG events and worrying so much we both realize that it will all gel and come together like it always has. The whole SWAT team, Sponsors and the wonderful members all seem to work together like a gourmet recipe in a kitchen. The common thread that stitches us all together is not only fishing itself but exactly what Dana always knew..... Family, Fun and Friendship are truly what it is all about. The fishing aspect is only the cherry on top so to speak. We both knew right out of the gate that the particular A.O. we have chosen for the last two events is probably not the most "Fishy" Place but it's beauty and other aspects was once again perfect for everyone involved.
Good job my friend for going above and beyond to prove to the whole fishing community that your dedication to keeping Dana's legacy alive is second to none.
To all of my SWAT brothers.....Your support and friendship means more to me that words can express and all I can say.....Is that I love you!
To all of the members who registered for this event and showed up with smiles on your faces and a warm feeling in your soul.....I thank you from the bottom of my heart.

I have already said it all in my post but I must again thank you Arthur and the rest of the SWAT crew for a amazing day!
It was truly epic for everyone. Smiles all around. Each year this event is bigger, better, and more special. For all of the work that goes into a massive event like this, I am very greatful for all who participated to make this the best surf fishing event ever!

When I arrive, I know that there will hugs and hand shakes coming from multiple people.
I know to take a look at the picture of Dana and also give thanks to him.
He was/is the reason that this event exists!
If I can share a little something.
Just a few days, before Dana went to be with Our Heavenly Father.
I received a friends invite from Dana.
I remember thinking, " Huh, that's cool", and it made me think about the first event I went to.
Dana was the first person to come up to my Sons and myself and told us to have a good time.
I only met, and talked, to a couple other people that day, Danny ( Pineapple Express ) was one and the other was this Asian guy, passing out his Moms egg rolls...:Big Grin:
Little did I know that the Asian guy, Arthur ( Wingnut ), would turn out to be a true God fearing person, a true friend and confidant, with a heart the size of a giant and absolutely the most unselfish person I have ever met.
Through him, I have come to meet some great people, who are now my friends.
But, most importantly, a person whom I can hang out with and just be myself.
Something that is very hard to do, in this day and age.
It is no surprise to me that these events are getting bigger every year and I see no end in sight.

Don't know how you did it Arthur but you outdid yourself again. I've been to the last three HG events and yes it does get better every year.
Hats off to the men and women of SWAT for throwing another 1st class event. The raffle prizes, the food, the fun, wow is all my family and I can say.
We're coming back for HG6 for sure! :Big Grin:

That was an amazing event!!!!!!! I have never been to a fishing event of such a large size and it was incredibly fun. Everyone was so friendly and helpful to each which something you don't always see *cough charter boats. I am already developing strategies and ideas to try to at least place next year. I should also practice my casting hehe. Even though my bro and I skunk it was a blast :) Oh and as someone has already mentioned when can you buy one of those electric grunion LC's?

It's quite obvious from seeing all the pictures that have been posted and the positive words that have been typed that this years Hunting Giants 5 exceeded all expectations. From the moment I arrived with my long time fishing buddy Trollmiester I saw all of my S.W.A.T. Friends hitting the sand helping with the setting up of the S.W.A.T. Command center, setting up Barbeques, filling the tables with some really impressive assortment of food and drinks and getting the area ready for all the participants. I couldn't help but get the same feeling I would get when we would set up the events that Dana organized. It was just a good feeling to see things come together as we all jumped in to get the area ready. I have to say to all my S.W.A.T. Friends it was an honor and a privelege to be a small part of this event and to be a part of the Family. :Cool:
As the morning progressed and all the participants got their gear ready and headed to the sign in booth it was clear to me that everyone in attendance was excited to be there and take part of what was to become a truly great day! I walked up and down the beach a few times taking pictures and talking with everyone it was evident by the smiles that this day would be a day that would be talked about for a long time and a day that will be remembered for a long time. It is important to say that everyone who participated made this event a success and I enjoyed every minute of it. :Cool:
Lieutenant Mike "Bones" I know how much effort you have put into each one of these events, "paying it forward", all of the time you have spent in your recon efforts and your tireless support of the S.W.A.T. Family has not gone unnoticed and I know that Dana would be very happy to call you his Friend and he would have been very proud of your efforts. Thank you Mike! :Thumbs Up:
Arthur, "Wingnut" I have talked with you many times about Dana since he passed and I'm sure that he would be very proud of the way you have preserved his desire to see Families and Friends having Fun Fishing and by the way you have "paid it forward" by continuing to make the Hunting Giants series of events Bigger and Better every year just like Dana strived to do with every next event he organized.
I was close to Dana and I had many talks with him about a lot more than just fishing. Family was very important to Dana and I respected that. Friends were also very important to him and Dana always took care of his Family and his Friends. I see a lot of Dana in you for all the same reasons and I respect that.

The way the SWAT members treat this freshwater guy will not be forgotten.

If I am lucky enough to attend HG6 I would like to make one request if at all possible.
I think it would be so awesome to get a group shot of everyone. :Group Hug:

Wow, what cool pictures.....great reports began poppin up just hours after the event.
All I can say is I HAD A GREAT TIME, and I wasn't even fishing! Really cool to get the time to chat with many folks, eat some great food, share this great location with all these wonderful FNNer's.....ain't it cool?
Arthur, Bones......hard work paid off HUGE, you guys deserve more then words could express in keeping the dream alive, thank you gentlemen for doing it and letting me share in the fun.
My SWAT brotha's, outstanding job my friends........great to see everyone and share the ride, got to spend some time with some of our northern chapter members, Billy, Dave, Brad, Mikey........thx boys.

What a great event ! Low key and down to earth . Fun all day long for everyone . Memorable moments ...climbing down over the rocks from the south side after first light fishing with Perchin Dave, and seeing a line of fishing folks stretched all the way down the beach, as far I could see, and so early yet. The end spot had not filled up yet by the big rock and so I had a shot at a few casts around it . Found a nice BSP with a weedless swimbait . I noticed a young gentleman walk up to my left (Anthony) . He politely paused back a bit as not to crowd in . In Swat style I quickly gave him the wave over to get in and cast the spot . Bam he hooks a big BSP on his first cast with an LC . He lit up so bright and kept saying that never happens to me first cast . You guys must be good luck ! And then he nails another in short order ! WTG Anthony ! I then got to help a junior trying to fish the same spot. The current was pulling his line across everybody , offered him a 3/4 weight to keep his line down , and got to talk with him a bit as I tied. And then the smoked salmon ! Bill , you are a BBQ master ! Yummm . It was a pleasure to hang and chat with a few of you Swat guys for more than just a minute . HG5 really did feel like a family reunion , and I look forward to next year now that I know what to expect ...I can plan on contributing more . Thanks to all the Swat Team and FNN folks and sponsors , and of course Commander Wingnut... for doing what you do , and being who you are !!!

After HG4, I thought that there's no way it could get better, but Arthur and the SWAT crew proved me wrong.
My family and I had a great time. Thank you to everybody that had a hand in this epic event. There's no way to describe the feeling, you just have to be there to witness it yourself. Can't wait until HG6!!!!!!!!!!!

What a great day on the sand, I just regret not being able to get there a little earlier to enjoy the morning...NEXT year for sure.
I just wanted to thank SWAT for putting together such an amazing event, you would be hard pressed to find anyone who wasn't smiling ear to ear....thank you to all the sponsors and people who put in the hard work to make HG5 happen!
The casting competition was a great idea and the lunch spread (minus Trolly's chovies) was fantastic!
This event is what Dana was all about to me, it was actually at Bolsa Chica where I first met Fisherman57....I realize how fortunate I was to have done so.

This would be pretty sweet to do, a wide angle lens should do the trick, if not, I can make a panorama out of it by taking multiple pictures, but for sure lets give it a shot next year! :D

A bit late but oh how grateful i am to have found this bunch. First off thank you Arthur for all the time you put in to make this the best surffishing event in socal. I got a smile
watching you walk the skinny enjoying what you worked so hard for. And also all the SWAT members that came along offering help.
I would also like to thank all the sponsors for the unbelievable prizes. And a congratulations for all the winners, which was everyone in attendance.
Fishing for the family and i was bad but we had a blast, for me HG is like a major holiday.
I will get out this weekend and try my SWAT LC

Howdy,
Slept 2 hours Friday nite/Saturday morn'n b4 HG5. Was wait'n @ the gate w/a lot of others to get in @ 6:00am. Got myself & my party geared up & was in line to get registered around 7:00am. Fished pretty much non-stop 'til 1:00pm. Caught noth'n but SALAD :(
Had a Great Time!!!
Can't wait 'til next year!

This is the one fishing event i'm always looking forward to every year.
Every year seems to get better and better, and I was happy to be a part of the festivities once again!
Arthur, Mike, and all the rest of the SWAT crew, thank you for all the hard work put in to organizing this amazing event!
I know my first HG event is what got me hooked to this sport and the FNN community, and i'm sure it's the same with many others out there.
Thank you to all the wonderful sponsors for donations and support. I'm still amazed at some of the prizes that are given away at this event and it's great to see the expressions of all the raffle winners when they step up to claim their prize :Big Grin:
Finally, thank you to all those who attended this event and made it even possible! It's all about sharing the sand and having a great time while doing it! I met so many wonderful individuals out there and for that I am grateful!
