That is a fresh water sculpin.... They inhabit a lot of lakes in So. Cal.. like Perris, Silverwood, DVL, Castaic etc etc....They are a top food source for the bass in Silverwood Perris and DVL.

These are killer imitations of 'em if fished correctly. Jighead works best for me.

Will go with midshipman. Is it legal to use as bait if you catch one? Didnt even know it was on until we reeled in to go home.

LOL!!! OK, looks like I've been fooled. So probably a scullpin. Never seen one. Important thing is, can it be used as bait?

Sorry. The running joke is that whenever a saltwater fish needs IDing, 99% of the time it's a Midshipman. It's now leaking over into the freshwater fish ID. Anyways it seems the the bait answer is No. For our district, only shad can be used as live bait and those have to be caught from the waters they being used in.

Here are the DFG regs:
4.10. Bait Fish Use in the Southern District.
Except as provided below, live or dead fin fish shall not be used or possessed for use as bait in the Southern District:
(a) Dead threadfin shad and live or dead longjaw mudsucker may be used in all Southern District waters.
(b) Live threadfin shad may be used only at the location where taken.
(c) Golden shiner and red shiner may be used in San Diego County.

Dead saltwater fish like sardines, mackerel and anchovies are allowed though.
