My Newfound Mojo Punked the Skunk! S.W.A.T. Couple Returns 9/21

Long time no see everyone! It’s been over 2 years since my last report. Sadly, I’ve had no decent fish to report about since that’s when I lost my mojo (my lucky LC that I won at HG2). I didn’t have much time to fish with all the wedding planning, but the few times I did get out, Mr. Skunky got the best of me. :Sad: I’ve been waiting to find my mojo again and get back on some fish, and I’m happy to report the time has finally arrived! :Envious:

My new hubby, Jason (Jaysuuun), knew I’ve been discouraged from surf fishing and wanted to boost my confidence so he revamped my surf gear: new Shimano Saros spinning reel, a “refurbished” LC pattern he’s been catching his legals on, a new waterproof jacket, and a new PINK fish lip gripper. I was pretty excited, mostly about the pink fish gripper, now all we needed was some fish.

Got to the A.O. at 0600. Overcast skies, warm air, no wind, low incoming tide. Everything looked good until we reached the water and noticed lots of debris floating around. First few casts produced lures full of weeds. Uh-oh, not a good start. Moved down a bit to find clearer water and soon after, BAM and BAM, double hookup!!

I was hoping it would be the other way around where the pink gripper was on the bigger fish. :LOL:

Jason was rubbing it in really good that he was 2 for 2 and on his way to a 3-pack. :Rolls Eyes: He was teasing me about my pancakes, being so bold to ask me why he couldn’t catch any shorts when I hooked into this guy. It was fighting pretty good… yesssss, could it be??

Hmmm… I was getting closer to that legal and wasn’t ready to give up. Jason ate his words as he picked up a couple of shorts and I managed one more before pulling this one in. I was literally begging Poseidon for it to be legal…

Barely legal, but legal is legal. I was sooo happy… not only did I beat the skunk but I got my first legal in years.

We continued to fish, hoping to catch larger models of hali, and I was determined to catch another one for my team.

Side note: earlier that morning, we noticed some fish swirling in the trenches just a few feet in front of us. Couldn’t see what they were, but Jason was assuming corbina and I thought maybe leos.

It seemed like the bite was dying down when suddenly, just a few feet away, something big snatched my lure and instantly ran straight out to sea. My first thought was maybe this is the big 30” hali I’ve been waiting to catch. But as it kept steadily pulling more and more line, I knew it was something else. I’ve never caught a leo before so that was my next thought. My drag was set pretty tight, but it still kept pulling. I would wait for a pause to try to gain some line back, but each time I pulled, it would pull back twice as hard. :Neutral:

I had plenty of line on my reel since it was newly spooled, but after about 10 minutes into the fight, Jason was getting worried that it would take all my line. By the way it was steadily pulling, with no head shakes, he thought that maybe it was a bat ray. He warned me that we may have to break it off or I’ll lose all my line. My thought was, “HELL NO, I WANNA SEE THIS FISH!” So after about 2/3 of my line was gone, we decided to button down the drag a bit to put more pressure on the fish. Risky move but it paid off. The fish began to slow down and I was able to muscle him in, being careful not to pull too hard.

We still hadn’t seen the fish, so I was still expecting a leo. As I drew it in closer, Jason went to put down his rod to help me with the tail grab. I was working him through the breakwater when I caught my first glimpse of the “leo”. I was expecting something grey and white with a long, slender tail for Jason to grab, but what I saw was a torpedo-shaped silver fish with vertical bars. A confused look crossed my face as I thought, “Wait, that doesn’t look like a leo?” :Shocked: A split second later, it registered and I yelled at the top of my lungs, “WSB!!!!!!! GET IT!!!!!!!!” :Angry::Angry:

Jason ran over to it as it was rolling in the skinny. I was crapping my pants, hoping and praying it wouldn’t come off. Thankfully Poseidon answered with a big wave and we were able to beach the big guy. I was jumping up and down, hooting and hollering... it's the biggest fish I ever caught. :Big Smile:

The car wash attendant handed me the key to the Tesla and I was just getting into the car when I received an incoming text on my Blackberry... I glanced down and saw that it was Tess... I thought, oh cool, haven't heard from my M.I.A. SWAT Sister in awhile. Let's see... multiple short Halibut, good, multiple legal Halibut... cool... then, I had to do a double take while holding the phone right up to my face when I saw... 38 inch WSB! :LOL:
Your WSB made my legal look like a dink... lol

Never cut it, thumb down the spool on the last couple wraps and the leader will break. Run out of line and it will snap at the spool and you loose your line then the fish will drag all the line, get hung up and die.

First of all, I had to look up what a Tesla was. :LOL: Very nice!!

Since I was getting skunked so much, I was perfectly happy with my shorts and legal hali, despite Jason's jibber-jabbering. But of course it was all the more satisfying to catch that WSB. :Secret: I never expected my first WSB to be such a monster, but it was definitely a gift from Poseidon, and I'm so very thankful. :Razz:

To be honest, I didn't have to do much trash-talking cauz the size of the fish spoke for itself. :LOL: He wanted to get me back on some fish but the moment I get something good, the husbandly support disappears. :Rolls Eyes: hahhaha nice.

That's pretty awesome that we're both at the top of the leaderboard, being the first married couple on S.W.A.T... even better to know mine's bigger. :Envious: lol

Never cut it, thumb down the spool on the last couple wraps and the leader will break. Run out of line and it will snap at the spool and you loose your line then the fish will drag all the line, get hung up and die.

X2 DR! "Cutting" the line defeats the purpose. When you're able see the middle of your spool through your line, it's time to put the brakes on and hope for the best. If you wait til the line is completely down at the spool, then it's too late. Time to pack it up and go home.

2nd, Okuma has the pink surf rod you(& Skunked4life) are look'n for. Do a search on EBay for an Okuma SST-S-902M & you'll find it. I've been using this rod(the non-pink version) since January for throw'n the LC's. It should pair up nicely w/your new reel. I've been using my Saros 2500 on my rod.
