S.W.A.T. Competition update - As of 9/10/13
Team Fish Storm – 56 Points
Team I Like Big Buts and I Cannot Lie – 49 Points

The following is a compilation report of the last couple of weekends in the surf.

Super long report!

Two Sundays ago (9/1), I decided to head North to Santa Barbara to fish with my Northern S.W.A.T. Brothers.
Gave Mikey (Exfactor) aka The Fishing Yoda a call and Mikey told me that Dave (Perchin’ Dave) and Brad (Dawn Treader) will be joining us for the day. :Big Grin: Sunday morning, I made the hour and forty five minute drive and was at Mikey’s doorstep at 5:00am sharp. Loaded my gear in his SUV and off we went to meet Dave & Brad at the first A.O. Conditions looked great and I had high hopes for a successful day…

I will cut straight to the point and let all of you know that I got Skunked that Sunday. Not just a Skunk, but a “Hard” Skunk. What’s a “Hard” Skunk you ask? The difference between a Skunk and a “Hard” Skunk is this… Usually, when you get a Skunk, meaning no fish caught or landed, you at least have a strike or two. Possibly have a follower interested in your lure, maybe fought a fish briefly before losing it or at least feel a few bumps on the LC.

A “Hard” Skunk is when you flat-lined all day… no hits, no missed strikes, no followers, no love, no nothing… Yes, I suffered a “Hard” Skunk! Drove 250 miles round trip, spent a total of 8 hours in the surf, walked close to 4 miles of beach at three different locations, hundreds of casts in pristine conditions and walked away with absolutely nothing… zip, zilch, nada…
It happens to all of us... thank Goodness it doesn't happen very often, but it does happens. Paying your dues, that's what I choose to believe...

Do I think it was worth the trip…? ABSOLUTELY! I would do it again in a heartbeat! Why? Because catching fish is just a “bonus”… the good time I had with Mikey, Dave and Brad far outweighs any fish that I can ever catch. Fishing wasn’t great for any of us… Brad did catch a couple of nice 14”+ Barred Surf Perch. Dave caught a rare Opaleye Perch out of the surf on artificials and I watched Mikey lost three fish including a decent size legal Halibut right at his feet in the surf. :EyePop: At the end of the day, when the surf gear were all put away, I’m wearing a dry set of clothes, sitting in a nice comfy booth in a cool restaurant and enjoying a Ribeye Steak with Mikey… I still had a big smile on my face. There’s a saying that goes something like this… “Many men go fishing all of their lives without knowing that it is not fish they are after." I get it… and I feel good about myself that I do get it…

Mikey, Dave and Brad, thank you for being such great hosts and spoiling me by sharing the splendor of your Northern Coastline. Your friendship and support means the world to me. See you all at HG5! :Big Grin:
Special thanks to Mikey for hooking me up with 15 lbs of Halibut fillets, whoohoo! :Envious:
Thanks Dave for the beautiful hi-res pics of the Santa Barbara coastline. :Thumbs Up:
To Brad, congrats on being officially inducted into the S.W.A.T. Brotherhood. :Dancing Banana:
I had a great time fishing with all of you!

Look at these pics from that Sunday… I’m sure you will agree that it was worth the trip… fish or no fish.
The first 5 photos were taken by Dave with a high resolution camera. Professional postcard quality I would say… beautiful pics Dave, thank you!

We then headed to a private stretch of beach in the backyard of one of Mikey's friends. We pull up to the automatic gate, Mikey punches in the code and the gate opens. We drove down the path to Jim's beachfront pad, parked the SUV and headed down to the beach.
Look at the view from Jim's backyard... what a place! :Envious:

Dave and Brad had to leave to do their husband duties... Mikey and I hit one more A.O. before going to lunch.
Again, the conditions were perfect and I saw Mikey farmed THREE fish right next to me including one very nice legal Halibut.
Of course, I had Mr. Stinky with me all day... :Crying:

The Asian Markets down there are always so jammed packed.

On Sunday (9/8), I did something that I rarely do… I hit the surf for a morning session and again for the evening session. No worthy catches, but did earn a few more points for the Team.
Ran into the Danimal (SP Dan) and we fished a stretch of beach together. I got a couple of small Calico, a Sand Bass, and we both got a few short Halibut. Really strange, the weather warms up and the water temperature dropped. :Surprised:

I was hiding behind a bush and yelling to Dan from above, lol

I was driving home from Dan's house when I get a call from JerryG. Giving me some exciting intel about White Sea Bass schooling up at a particular A.O. Jerry hooked onto a couple of them but had the hooks pulled. He still managed a nice 24" legal Halibut fishing with his son (check out his report). So I gave Mike (Lieutenant Bones) a call to see if he wanted to meet me at the A.O. for an evening session. Mike and I got there around 6:00pm and fished until the lights went out...
We didn't run into any Ghosts but had fun with the Flatties. Mike landed six short Halibut up to 21 1/2" and I only landed two shorts. We both missed a bunch of hits... There were bait fish everywhere and the Halibut was quite active that evening.

There’s still time to get registered for the HG5 event… all are welcome… hope to see you on the 28th!

Parting shots...

Last week, I saw Romeo playing with something in the backyard… I walked over to him and realized that it was a Bee. Before I could take it away from him, too late… a yelp tells me that he had been stung, right in the chops. Within a couple of minutes, his face swelled up. We were going to take him to the vet, but he was still his happy, go lucky self. Running around and playing like normal, so I decided just to keep a close eye on him to see if he passes out or something, lol. After about an hour, the swelling went back down and he was fine. Hi Commander!

What a great report! Seriously, take all of your reports, print them, send them to an editor and get it published as the ultimate socal surf fishing guide!!! Amazing!

1. I am going to set one of those pictures taken by Dave as my wallpaper.
2. :Skunk: so what? Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God so that at the proper time he may exalt you (2 Peter 5:6) - THIS is why YOU are so blessed in life and fishing my friend! Thanks for showing us that you aren't the surf fishing god, just super-human surf fisherman!
3. Gotta love shopping with the misses right? Especially at an Asian market right? Especially before the harvest festival right?
4. Oh that "back to normal" picture is soooo cute! I hate to say it, but even with a swollen face, I can still picture how cute Romeo is! Hope he continues to do well.
5. You and Dan fishing chest deep makes me envious :Envious: at your "go for broke" attitude! I gots to be braver out there!
6. Last but not least, I do not really think that you got skunked at all...You are a fisher of men and you caught a GREAT group of them!

Ken

Looks like a great couple of weekend sessions with a variety of the SWAT group.
The hi-res photos look great. Looks like they belong on a postcard!
Sorry to hear about your skunk, but its kinda nice knowing that it can even happen to the commander
Glad to hear nothing serious happened to Romeo. That's one tough puppy! A couple of years ago, the same thing happened to my roommate's jack russell and he had to be rushed straight to the vet.
Looking forward to Hunting Giants :Big Grin: Thanks for the report!

What a bunch of great outings guys.
The first picture Dave looks amazing. You should try playing with the editing process and make it a HDR, the outcome would be pretty cool.
Arthur, you are human! you got skunked! It's a rare occurrence for sure. But man, look at that view and water, it's one of those days where it makes you appreciate just being out there and having a blast. Im sure you had a great time with the northern crew.
The water at Pea Soup is almost lake like
Oh and that foot print, definitely a chupacabra, its been sighted there ever since we've started fishing there lol.
Dan, good to see you out there bud, very classy move on showing the guy how to toss the LC brotha  let alone let him have it. Way to pay it forward my friend. The guy seems stoked and you know he'll put it to good use.
Sorry to hear about Romeo, bee stings suck for sure, but that last picture of him with the water bottle is priceless, that dog will be fineeeee lol.
I'll see you guys soon!
