SUMMARY OF EVENTS:
On this day, I met up with a fellow FNN'er named Blake. After complaining how I've been skunked each time while surf fishing, he took me to his hallowed "Honey Hole" and swore I would catch something. Now, I've heard that there are Leopard Sharks seen from time to time... but I've never seen several hundred swim at my feet in a 4 hour period. This is why I named this stretch of beach, Leo Highway. We saw hundreds of Leo's ranging from as small as 12" up to about 4' long. I was in heaven as I was a marine bio major for the first 2 years of college and sharks were my focus.

THE RESULTS:
I fished with camo worms while Blake fished his LC. I threw my line in and BAM... I reeled in a nice 3" baitfish. I laughed and threw it back. Then again... BAM... 3" baitfish. Hey, at least I've finally caught something from the surf, right?!?! Then, after about 40 minutes... I finally I hooked up with a decent sized BSP. W00T!!! My first REAL fish from the surf. As I'm doing this, Blake is catching Jack Smelt and getting pissed off. Then BOOM... he hooks up with a MONSTER Shovel Nosed Guitar Fish. We throw that back and then a little later he hooks onto a Leopard Shark. A good sized one too... however, as he's been fighting it, he feels the LC unbutton one hook at a time and then, it's gone. All that time wasted when the Leo was just feet from the sand. Onto the next one. A little later, he hooks up with a decent sized Leo that he hooked on the retrieve and that one we landed. Then the fishing died down and it was time to move on.

SUMMARY OF EVENTS:
I went back again to the stretch of beach I dubbed Leo Highway. However, the water was a little cloudier and I only ran into about a dozen Leos. Strange because of how many I saw the week before. I started fishing with my BRAND NEW Lucky Craft... had to get one after Blake showed me how he killed in with his. Plus I've been reading so much about them, I had to see what the hype was. I started casting and reeling, casting and reeling. I did this for over an hour without a bite. Walked up and down the beach and then finally hooked up.

THE RESULTS:
When I finally hooked up, it turned out to be about a 16" YFC... a decent fighter too! Then I cast out again and BAM... hooked up again. This one unbuttoned before I could reel him in though. Then I cast out again... BAM... another YFC. This went on for 15 minutes straight catching TFC and Jack Smelt. Then I hooked up to what felt like sea weed. I was a little scared as I thought I might lose my LC to a plant... but when I reeled in a little closer, it turned out to be a 20" Hali... just 2" shy of my dinner table! This was my first Hali I've ever caught and my heart was racing. I was so excited, I casted out more and more, but the fishing window had passed. All in all, I caught 8 YFC, 2 JS and 1 Hali... a great day of fishing in my book!

Very nicely done. That's a quality first outing with the LC. It's a great feeling when that chunk of seaweed comes up and you suddenly realize its actually a fish. Great report!

Thanks for sharing and congrats!

Leo Highway, I like it. Try a rubber swimbait on them. Squid and mackerel are the best Leo's.

same thing happened to me when i caught my first hali. At first i thought i snagged seaweed and then once i brought it near shore it started fighting and i thought i had a sngf. It wasnt until i beached it that i knew what i caught. You'll never forget that first hali. Congrats!

Wish I could've gone with you this morning... but work beckons. I've only worked 2 days in the past 2 weeks... like Sgt. Bilko says, "All I've ever wanted was an honest week's pay for an honest day's work".

Awesome read! Sounds like you had a nice bite going that morning! It's such an awesome feeling when you're fishing alone when a bite goes off. Nice little honey hole you've got there. Conditions look pristine.
