Been pretty busy with work and the new baby lately, so I’ve been getting little time out in the surf. Work has finally let up a bit so I actually got to venture out during the week for a few hours yesterday and today...glad I did.
Sunday I actually got to go out for a couple of hours and ran into Lt. Bones. The area was littered with bait and birds but all we could manage was some YFC and queenfish. The birds were so thick at times we couldn’t even cast.:EyePop: I dumped a couple of my first hookups, which felt like YFC, but the first fish landed came out of a double hookup with Mike.

I thought I learned my lesson with LC hooks to the handa couple of months ago, but got a new lesson when we were releasing these fish. I took the hooks out but while I was trying to grab the fish to release it, a wave grabbed some kelp nearby which wrapped up my line, dragging the LC attached...yep, right into my hand. Took two hooks to the fingers. They didn’t seem real deep so I just grabbed them and yanked. I didn’t think they went in past the barbs till I felt the little pops as they came out. I figure they woulda just slid out if the barbs didn’t go in. Oh well, birds are crashing and there are fish to be caught so I just shrugged it off and didn’t even mention what just happened to Mike. Two days later and these holes are still throbbing a bit so I guess they were a little deeper than I thought.
We didn’t score anything of consequence, but we did happen to run into another S.W.A.T. brother who was making some casts a few yards away...Midgettosser (Mike). Good to see you out there man!
So, since work has lightened up, thanks to some very strange circumstances with one of my clients that I won’t get into, I decided to do a hit and run on a spot up north. I had to drop off my son at school and get back home by 11am so I only had about an hour or so to make the run. I hit the sand by 9:30 and figured I was probably too late for any action...how wrong I was. I worked around some structure and came up to an opening stretch of sand that had produced a few perch before. BAMMM!!!!! Fish on...but wait, this ain’t no perch. Bring it up and tape out a nice 15” checker.

What happened next is the kind of bite you dream of. At one point, I made twelve consecutive casts with hookups...unfortunately not all landed. I didn’t take pictures of every fish cuz I knew I had limited time...to fish and before the bite faded. On one cast I hook up, pull the hook, hook up again and lose the fish a few yards out. The next cast, I get bit but let the rod load up heavy, lean back on it but don’t swing real hard figuring that maybe I had hit the fish too hard on my last couple of hooksets. As the rod is bent, I feel a hard “THUNK”! I’m thinking it’s just a good fish with spirit and it starts to pull a little drag. It feels pretty heavy, so I’m figuring on a good checker. As it gets to color, I see shine and know it’s a YFC, a good one...but wait, two silhouettes? I’ve got two on one LC! I guess that second “THUNK” was the second YFC trying to literally get a piece of the action. Right as I’m draggin them on the sand, the bigger of the two falls off...at closer glance, the hook actually broke off. At first, I’m thinking, “dang it, that woulda made a nice pict and all I ended up with was the small one”, not to mention a couple of lost points for our monthly competition. As I drag the remaining captive on the beach, I realize this one might be smaller but he ain’t exactly small. He tapes out at a little over 16”. I didn’t snap photos cuz I’m figuring I need to get the LC back in the water, hook or no hook. I start flinging and the fish keep on coming. It goes on for a little more than a half hour then dies out. Bait is still popping around and the birds are so full, they just float around watching. I finish with a total of 7 calicos 12-15”, 5 YFC - 2 over 16”, one at about 17” (pictured) and 2 bsp 11-13”. Not a bad session for about an hour and a half of work...really all happening in that half hour or so span. While I was hooked up to one of the last calicos, a guys starts working over to me and I call him over. He’s slinging a carolina rig with sand crabs and figured he’d probably score on some of the YFC, but the bite had pretty much died by the time he tried to get in the action. He did end up getting into some pigs while I was finishing up including one that might have pushed 15-16”. Didn’t catch his name but it was cool to see him start nailing some fish.
So, after all that action, I figure I’ve gotta give it another go this morning. The plan was to get a little earlier start and try and get on those fish a little sooner. Well, things don’t always go as planned and with my son dragging his feet this morning, along with a crap load more traffic to deal with this morning, my feet didn’t hit the sand till 10:15. I head straight to the honey hole, bypassing the stretch of beach and rocks I started at yesterday. By the third cast, I realized this was a different day. No birds, no bait and no action. I do get one hookup but it pulls off almost instantly and it didn’t seem like it was gonna be much to brag about anyway...at least that’s what I’ll keep telling myself. There’s a guy a little bit away that I recognized as another angler I had talked to yesterday right as the action started. He had been throwing baited long rods and was packing it in but got to see me land a couple of fish before he departed. I think his name was Mike (sorry if you’re reading this, I forget). He comes over to chat and tells me that the place was hopping a little earlier in the morning. I manage a little bsp as we’re shooting the breeze about throwing the LC and he watches me work it for a few minutes before starting back to his rods which were set up in spikes a short ways away. Before he can make it back to his gear, I get slammed and I call him back. This thing has weight and is trying everything to work his way into the nearby rocks. I horse him through the gauntlet and I get a glimpse of his dark silhouette in the white water...a nice fat checker. I get him beached and tape him out at about 18”...a very nice fish for the sand, fully decorated with dark colors of brown, orange and yellow. I get some glory shots and we say our goodbyes as I let him go back to his haunt. The fellow angler packs it in and I keep at it for another hour. switching between a dropshot and the LC. I manage a couple of smaller models to bring my total to 3 calicos and the one bsp and head for the barn, happy that I got a nice sampling of what could’ve been a repeat performance if I had been able to make it there a bit sooner. Can’t complain though cuz it was another great session capped off by a heck of a nice bass.
Here are some photos of the past couple days work.
