Team Butt Heads – 43 Points

Sunday 8/11 Surf fishing report:

My best canine friend, Baby (aka Wingnut Pug) is getting old. When I first joined the FNN forum in 2006, she was 7 years old. She is now 14… not doing so well and there’s some tough decisions that will need to be made soon. Thank you to my S.W.A.T. Brothers & Sisters for your thoughtful messages.
After a tough week, I desperately needed a big time stress reliever...

What’s the best way for me to relieve stress? Hit the surf of course… :Big Grin:

Check conditions and the swell projections looked great. I decided to hit one of my favorite low tide spots Sunday morning. Took the hour long drive to the A.O., I pulled up at 5:15am and saw that there's already a vehicle parked in my usual spot… I instantly recognized that it was one of my S.W.A.T. Brother’s car.
SP Dan was here and already out on the battlefield engaging the enemy in the darkness. I geared up and started walking along the path towards the beach. In the far distance, I could see the bright beams of a headlamp moving around in the surf… Dan, you’re giving away your position to the enemy my Brother. Stealth in the grey light, hit them before they even know that you’re there.
I decided to give Dan some space (or myself actually) and hiked on over to the next beach about ¼ mile away. Needed some alone time to collect my thoughts…

Boots wet at 5:45am…
Conditions: Cool, slightly overcast morning, light on-shore wind, 1 ft low incoming tide, flat conditions with 1 ft swells in extended intervals. Every 10 minutes or so, a couple of big sets would come rolling in causing retreat, but overall, lake like conditions. Water clarity good, water temp. approx. 69 degrees, light salad condition, Moderate bait fish and bird presence. Close to ideal conditions.

Half a dozen casts in and I hook up… a big Smelt, shook it off quickly and kept casting. A few minutes later, a nice bendo, this one feels heavy with lots of headshakes, or so I thought… The headshakes turns out to be wing-flaps, a Flat Fish of the “Wrong” kind! Don’t you hate it when that happens?!?
Big, soft things keeps bumping into my legs... kinda creepy... When there was enough light, I found out that they were Bat Rays, Leopard Sharks and Shovelnose.
http://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r135/Wingnut32566/Wingnut%2012/Wingnut%2013/0833eafc-6109-45ce-92d5-28571cb6cf7e.jpg (http://s143.photobucket.com/user/Wingnut32566/media/Wingnut%2012/Wingnut%2013/0833eafc-6109-45ce-92d5-28571cb6cf7e.jpg.html)

Then I get the LC stuck on a underwater boiler rock that I couldn't see to mark in the grey light... After a few minutes of pulling & tugging at it from different angles, the lure would not budge. Then applying gradual, constant heavy pressure to see if the hooks will straighten out freeing the lure and it snapped off. This was the 10th or 11th lost warriors for me so far this year. I think I lost a total of 5 or 6 all of last year.

As usual, for the past month or so, there has been a strong Yellow Fin Croaker bite at grey light, most likely due to the abundance of bait fish in the surf. Probably landed about 7 or 8 the first half an hour or so before the YFC bite died off. Didn’t get any really big ones like the past few sessions, but a couple pushing the 15” mark, fun fighters, all of them. :Big Grin:

Picked up a couple of chunky Calico and Pancakes working my way along the short stretch of beach. Pretty steady action as the fish were quite active.

After a couple of hours of good, constant action, but no noteworthy catch, I decided to make my way out to a rock formation. No points for any catch from the rocks, but let’s see if I can find something bigger that wants to play.
Ended up spending a couple of hours on the rocks. Probably less than an hour fishing, the rest was playing around and taking underwater photos in the tide pools… the kid in me just find tide pools simply fascinating.

I did get a spunky Turd Roller to play…
http://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r135/Wingnut32566/Wingnut%2012/Wingnut%2013/SWAT1032-2.jpg (http://s143.photobucket.com/user/Wingnut32566/media/Wingnut%2012/Wingnut%2013/SWAT1032-2.jpg.html)

And a few decent Checkers… hiding under the kelp canopy.
I gotcha... you're not going anywhere!

I'm thinking... there’s gotta be somebody home in this deep pocket.
http://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r135/Wingnut32566/Wingnut%2012/Wingnut%2013/SWAT1031-2.jpg (http://s143.photobucket.com/user/Wingnut32566/media/Wingnut%2012/Wingnut%2013/SWAT1031-2.jpg.html)

First cast into the hole and the LC gets absolutely hammered!
After quite a few lost LC’s, I learned my lesson and keep my drag buttoned down when fishing heavy structure. Better to lose the fish by horsing it in than to lose the fish AND your lure too. These smart and powerful Bass head right for the boilers or kelp as soon as they are hooked.
I had the fish’s head turned away from the hazards and on the rock before it knew what hit it. :Envious:
It was kinda hard to get an accurate measurement on the uneven surface, but it was around 24” (released). My previous PB Calico was 23” and this one was definitely bigger. A new PB, too bad it wasn’t from the sand.

Photo courtesy of a Bucket Commando Foot Soldier. He and his pals had three, with one of them almost as big as this one, caught on squid, dead in a tide pool. :Crying: Oh well, they were legal kills.
http://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r135/Wingnut32566/Wingnut%2012/Wingnut%2013/ec56b859-fc1d-41fa-b448-b1e7d13bec38.jpg (http://s143.photobucket.com/user/Wingnut32566/media/Wingnut%2012/Wingnut%2013/ec56b859-fc1d-41fa-b448-b1e7d13bec38.jpg.html)

The tide was coming in fast, chasing me off the rocks…
So I stepped back on the sand and started working my way back down the beach. The whole time, I was keeping my eyes out to see if Dan will come over the hill from the adjacent beach… he never did, so I figured that he got into some good action too (see SP Dan’s report).

The tide is now probably risen to about 4 ft and the water movement was ideal. Pushing the bait fish around and I was thinking to myself how nice it would be to bring home a legal Halibut for the Iron Chef. We just ran out of Halibut fillets and I released my last 6 legals, so I figured that Poseidon owes me one, lol :Envious:

Ask and thou shalt receive…
This Flat Fish of the “Right” kind hit at the very end of my retrieve, just as I was about to pull the lure out of the water… gave the old ticker quite a jolt. The Master of Ambush had followed my lure all the way in and waited for the last moment to strike… Make a habit to always finish off your retrieve. :!!!:
Solid 25” Hali. #16 for the year. K.I.A. as per the Iron Chef’s orders.

Thank you Lord, you knew that I could use some positive distraction from a tough week. I just do my best… and let you take care of the rest. :Big Grin:

Have a nice week everybody and don’t forget to register for HG5!

Last week, one of my S.W.A.T. Brothers, Mike (Midgettosser1) went on an overnighter and ran into some nice Bluefin… gave me almost 20 lbs of fresh Bluefin fillets.
I tried smoking some for the first time. I'm probably doing it all wrong, but I think it turned out great, really delicious but not as good as Master Yoda Mike (Exfactor) smoked Tuna. :Envious:
Come to HG5 and sample some of his world famous smoked Tuna for yourself… and my Mom’s egg rolls of course!

Commander, your family will be in our family's prayers this week and the coming weeks! Nice therapy session out there. I think that i might have to find a way to get to that AO using an alternate route! I have yet to master that area. Plus, I don't feel good letting you brave snake country by yourself!

Nice flattie and even nicer checker. Here i was so excited abiut my short turd roller and you get its big sister, the giant calico.

My family, especially my wife and toddler, love your tide pool pics! They take the ipad away from me and forget that i was on it first. My favorite was the ultra lime green anenome! So pretty!

Next time we see each other, i will rightfully turn over Jason's lost and found LC and give you a hug or high five. Remember, its the present that matters most. Take care of wingnut pug and love her to the last day. Go rent All Dogs Go to Heaven and watch it together.

Your friend and student of the surf,

Ken

Hey Brotha' Arthur,

I'll be right back ... gotta read your report first! ............ Okay... I'm back! WOW! What a fun report! I wish I wrote half as well as you Sir!

Fantastic photos .... I have the same camera ... maybe you could give me a few tips so that I could snap a few good shots like you have here!
The lime green anemone is also one of my favorites! I also like the one with the close up of the crab ... I noticed that there was a tiny fish behind it peering out of a crevice just inches behind the crab. How could the crab have  missed it!!

When I received your text, you surprised me that you were fishing so close bye .... I do understand the need to be alone in order to gather one's own thoughts! I've been feeling that need ... quite a bit myself lately and "Poseidon's salt shaker" is a great place to achieve it!

I'm glad that you were able to bring a legal home with you .... it kept you out of the dog house with the "Iron Chef" for sure! I'm certain that she has some fantastic recipe in mind to honor that beautiful 25" Hali and you! Her dishes always look so mouth watering delicious! :Envious:

Ahh .... "Beam me up Scottie"!..... you busted me! I was using my head lamp in the pitch dark to keep the leg thumpers 10 or so feet away from me .... I always get a bit :EyePop: nervous (scared) when the heavy, thick swimmies run into ankles and or legs in the dark ...

"What was that!!!" ... "Nope  ... not a Great White Shark that time" ... phewww! ... so I tried to attract them away from me using my head lamp ... just until the sky went from pitch dark to gray.
I'm not afraid of too much .... but things that bump against me in the dark ..... gives me the :EyePop: shivers!

Sad Note: I'm really saddened to hear of your best friends condition .......

Nice going out there sir! Sucks that the session got cut a little short. That is an awesome checker to round out one heck of a session! Guess all that intel of where NOT to go paid off a little. Then again you probably woulda nailed em wherever you ended up at.:Big Grin: Again, all the best to you, the iron chef and Wingnut pug. Lots of people out there pulling for her.

Take care brother...

Is that where we are holding HG5? I see the surface iron coming out to play!!!!! Really nice cali you found there! I too, enjoy those long walks to collect my thoughts on the sand, and seem energized from the experience. As we grow older, our pets don't live as long as we do, and we grasp the memories of all our loved one's in our hearts. Baby has lived a long life for her breed, be glad you gave her all she needs in life. If I get a chance to go tuna fishing before the event, may do the smoke batch at home, and bring it with me, feel a need to get wet this year, share the water with old and new friends, and see what posideon has in store for me. I caught about 10 mud marlin last week, and got to at least pull on something.

Great report, Arthur, as always. I've been out of the country for awhile and missed a lot of the summer fishing season, but your writing and excellent pictures make up for it. You're a natural and missed your calling as a nature photographer and magazine writer. You've got a natural sense of drama and the bit payoff never fails. Nicely done.

Thanks Ken, Baby is doing better and she's not in any pain... we'll see what happens.
Give the lost & found LC back to Jason. It was in Poseidon's hand for awhile... might have some magic in it.
Great job feeding all those people at your church last weekend. Way to "Pay it Forward." :Big Grin:

Some of the best pics I have seen in sometime. What a great read as well. Love that pug nation shot :Thumbs Up:
Thanks Rob, looking forward to seeing you at HG5 my friend. :Big Grin:

SP Dan <"))>< "The Danimal"!
Brother Dan, I just got a new Panasonic TS5. I beat the heck out of my TS4 and it's time to retire it, lol. I have to take out and re-insert the SD card like five times before it would take a pic and it lost some nice pics too.
Yes, I hate things that go bumping into my legs in the dark too... creepy! Like I said before, Fish aren't supposed to touch you, lol
Give Rhonda a big hug for me and tell her that i hope to see her next month at HG5. :Big Grin:

Just a quick report on my morning sessions this past Saturday and Sunday.

S.W.A.T. Competition Update - As of 8/19.
Team Skunk Killerz - 263 Points
Team Butt Heads - 137 Points

Saturday 8/17.

Hit the surf for a couple of hours before work Saturday morning. Met Albert (Jinbow) at grey light and I fished until 9:00am.
An uneventful session, I got two Yellow Fin Croakers, three short Halibut and a Calico Bass.
Hey Albert, it was great fishing with you again. Too bad we didn't find the Grey Ghosts but maybe next time.
See you at HG5 my friend. :Big Grin:

Sunday 8/18.

Saturday night, I made it to the final table at our poker tournament.
I was just getting comfortable in my new seat at the final table when I get a text... it was from Don (Bachiboy). He wanted to give me a heads up on the 405 Freeway closures, just in case it affected my drive if I hit the surf in the morning. I told him that I will be taking the 5 South on my solo mission...

Not long after that text... I got knocked out. Thanks a lot Don for the lucky text... now ain't that just Bachi!
Didn't feel like sitting at the cash table so went home early. At least I will get a few hours of sleep before hitting the road.

4:15am and I'm on the road...
Got to my Southern A.O. at 5:45am... grey light, perfect timing.
Swells were flat, water was clear, bait fish in the surf... but, and it's a big 'BUT', the salad condition was out of control. I mean absolutely wicked...
Out of a dozen casts, you might get one semi-clean retrieve. This is my biggest pet peeve of surf fishing... WEEDS!
I spent two hours on that beach looking for clean spots to fish. So frustrating when you come up on a beautiful deep hole that you just know is holding fish and it's full of salad. I eventually found a small section of relatively clean surf and was blessed with my 17th legal Halibut of the year. :Dancing Banana:
I kept a 26" legal last weekend, so this lucky girl will live to chase the LC again... :Big Grin:
http://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r135/Wingnut32566/Wingnut%2012/Wingnut%2013/1f0517cf-845d-44ea-9bf0-4d1ac285cf7c.jpg (http://s143.photobucket.com/user/Wingnut32566/media/Wingnut%2012/Wingnut%2013/1f0517cf-845d-44ea-9bf0-4d1ac285cf7c.jpg.html)

I had enough of the all you can eat salad bar and headed to a 2nd A.O. about a half an hour away...
Let's see if I can get lucky and nail a nice Ghost in Robert's (Murrieta Angler) back yard.

SUCCESS!!! Check out this big White Sea Bass!!! :EyePop:

Okay, okay... I cannot tell a lie... I didn't catch it, lol :Envious:

Here's the story...
I was working my way along the rocky shoreline when I came up on four bait & wait long rodders. You know, 12-15 ft rods, 3 oz pyramid sinkers, big hooks and a slab of bait... Really friendly bunch of guys and one of the guys said, "Hey, you want to check out what we caught...?" I said sure and he led me over to a big 42" cooler they had on the sand. I was expecting to see a cooler full of Spotfins, Yellow Fins, Perch... but when he opened that ice chest, my jaw hit the ground. :OMG!: Two beautiful White Sea Bass...
Do you know what they caught it on...? The answer was even a bigger shock to me...
Whole Mussels... yep, just pin an entire Mussel on the hook and chuck it out there as far as you can... :Surprised:
My Goodness... I thought I'd seen it all in the surf and I learned something new on Sunday. I'm going to start smearing Mussel attractants on my LC's. :Big Smile:
WSB on a big gooey glob of Mussels, go figure... :Envious:

After chatting with them for a bit, I worked my way back to the parking lot and called it a day by noon.
I caught three short Halibut, three Yellow Fin Croakers and four Barred Surf Perch on that beach. Had a decent weekend in the surf and added a few more points to Team Skunk Killerz big lead.

If you're wondering why I haven't been fishing with the custom LC's that JKim, the LC Artist created for me...
I met with the Lucky Craft International guys about a month or so ago and showed them all those LC's and they LOVE IT!
They asked me if they can borrow them to take back to Japan and show the factory. I hope they're just borrowing them... lol

I woulda thought it was a fluke or that they hooked some smaller fish that the WSB ate, but to get two? That musta been some good/fresh mussel there. Nice going getting the legal outta that salad bar. Glad to hear the trek paid off...sounded like one heck of a long ride home. I can only hope to be reading one of your soon to come fish reports where you do actually land a behemoth WSB like what you were posing with.... soon my friend! And knowing you .... you will make it happen!

Thanx Arthur for the cliff hanging, nail biting adventures with pic's!

Two beautiful White Sea Bass... [/SIZE]
Do you know what they caught it on...? The answer was even a bigger shock to me...
Whole Mussels... yep, just pin an entire Mussel on the hook and chuck it out there as far as you can... :Surprised:

That's a new one. Sounds like Sheephead bait.
Wow, what a surprise ? Did they bust the mussels and were they small mussels ?
Thnx for the bonus report Arthur.

Uhhh, not sure what to say...Congratulations?:Embarrassed: I thought I was doing a good deed and didn't think about the bachi I might transfer over to the poker game (hey Binh, it worked!!! Where's my cut?:ROFL::ROFL:) Well, at least you got a little more sleep than anticipated.:Big Grin: That is one heck of a ghost and absolutely amazing that it came on mussels. I woulda thought it was a fluke or that they hooked some smaller fish that the WSB ate, but to get two? That musta been some good/fresh mussel there. Nice going getting the legal outta that salad bar. Glad to hear the trek paid off...sounded like one heck of a long ride home. Well, lesson learned, won't be calling you on poker night ever again, BUT I can't help it if Binh calls me and hands the phone to you.

Great read and picts as always sir!
Don
I was just kidding about the text Don... had to blame somebody for my poor play. Yeah, Binh ran the table all night. Live up to his screen name and gave everybody the Bad Beat and took it down. :Envious:
I was totally shocked when they told me what they caught the WSB on... amazing.
You had some nice session the last couple of days... living up to the Colonel Croaker moniker, hahaha :Big Smile:
I haven't hit that crazy bite in SAMO yet.

I heard Lt. Bones caught a guy poaching a short Halibut the other day in that area. I know that guy... dude, you've been identified! Even hiding behind your hat and bandana. Some things never change, loser... You read every single one of our reports, so I'm sure you'll get this message. :Finger:

Thanks for nothing. I just threw up in my mouth when you told me 37" wsb. Gross! Guess where I am headed tomorrow???

Still, a great bonus! How do you manage a 27" butt at the soup plantation?!?!?
Gotcha!
Bummer about conditions this morning... maybe it will improve by the weekend.

Hey Brotha!

The first clue  to anyone that knows you ... should have been......

I haven't caught a legal WSB this year yet Dan, but the legal Halibut count is good.
You've been doing quite well out there lately my friend, keep it up! Your team need the points, lol :Envious:
Hope to fish with you again soon, maybe this weekend in your back yard.

Martin, sorry if I wasn't clear on the Mussels...
They didn't catch it on the whole Mussel, shell and all... Just the big gooey glob after they broke it out of the shell.
If they caught it on the entire Mussel intact... that would truly be shocking.

I was about to say..... 27" flatty and THIRTY SOMETHING INCH GHOST!?! WTPHO!?! :EyePop:.....
You had us fooled again commander.

Either way, thats one huge WSB. First, we see a striper get caught on a bait&waited camo. Then we see a 28" or something flatty get caught on a bait&waited camo. And now, a monster wsb on a whole piece of mussel. Pretty interesting...

Hey... im sure you noticed but you are killing the "Most legal halibut" category... Slow it down will you..... JK!
I am curious what your year-end count is going to be. There still so much time on the clock.

Thanks for the report!

Hey Arthur,
I read your report earlier and enjoyed every minute of it.
I've been so swamped with work and then the weekend with Sheila, that I haven't been responding to any reports.
You have been tearing up the flatties, I think you just might beat your 24 count from a couple years back...
You just need to average 2 per month, for the rest of the year.
Gonna try to get out today, for a couple of hours. I'll give you a call later this morning...

Slow down?!? I only have one speed Thien and that's fast-forward, lol
This year is definitely better than last year in the legal Halibut count. :Big Grin:
Looking forward to seeing you and Shallom at HG5.

I have a feeling that you're going to go on a legal White Sea Bass run here very soon my friend.
See you at HG5 my S.W.A.T. Brother!
