Freshwater fishing:

Silverwood Lake ( 7/15)

Since my last visit to Silverwood Lake, I became addicted to striped bass fishing. I planned a fishing trip, took two spinning rods with me to meet a friend at the lake around 7am. We fished for a few hours from 7am -3pm. The fishing was slow but steady. I caught 12 stripers with anchovies between 7-11:30. After I got tired of anchovies, I brought a box of garlic scented night crawlers. It was a good choice and I had 9 more fish. Released the lip-hooked stripers, gave some away and took a few home.

Puddinstone Lake (7/19)

Went to Puddingstone lake around 8am and fished with a few of the regular fishermen along the East Shore. I was fishing with a 13' Tenkara rod, 21' line and a size 16 fly that I tied a few days ago (dark brown nymph). Some panfish were hiding in the weed beds at the end of cove. I fished for 2.5 hours, caught about 20-25 bluegills, redears and juvenile bass. All fish were released safely..... Last year when my friends and I did fly fishing at this lake, we used to catch and release over 100 panfish a day during the summer....... But the last a couple times that I fished at the Pudd, I only caught 10-30 panfish. Puddingstone Lake needs time to recover from the 'big die off' and I can't wait to return to my favorite lake when the fishing is normal again.

Gregory Lake (7/24)

I had two days to enjoy the mountains, so I headed up there, stayed in my cottage and was looking forward to trout fishing. I arrived the lake about 7:00 AM and hiked along the trail with my telescopic Tenkara rod. I stopped at a few places, set up my rod with 21' of line. I choose a size 16 BH brown nymph, cast pass the weeds and with a slow retrieve, let the fly travel along the edge of the weeds. Caught some crappies and bluegills plus 5 trout within 3.5 hours. Kept the 5 trout and called it a day before 11 o'clock. After I got home, I set up my fly tying station and tied some saltwater flies on the shady deck.

Saltwater fishing:

Ventura Harbor (7/27-8/2)

Every year my family takes a summer vacation to celebrate my son's birthday at our timeshare condo. The 2 bedroom unit that we own is right on the water and we have a 180 degree view of the ocean and harbor, plus plenty of room for privacy for mom, dad and the children.

7/27, arrival day. After we unpacked everything, we went out shopping and filled the fridge with some food and drink for the stay. We went to an Italian restaurant for dinner, everyone ordered pasta and I had Osso Buco.

7/28, Woke around 7AM and went to the fishing dock. The temperature was in the low 60's. I set up my Tenkara rod, 21' of line and a size 8 orange and green colored fly (with a jig head) that I tried. Cast it out about 15-18 feet away from the dock and let the fly travel 6'-8' below the surface. I fished till 11:40 and caught 9 croakers, 16 surf perch and 2 jack smelt. I had a couple of very aggressive bites, twice a fish broke the line during the fight and took off with my flies. (All fish were safely released after the photos).

7/29, fished from 9:50AM to noon. Had about 6 croakers, 5 perches and 15-20 lizard fish caught with the fly. Scott also came to join me for fishing. He caught a dozen lizard fish and 1 surf perch. The wind picked up around the noon, we quit fishing to stay warm inside of the building..... We drove to Oxnard in the afternoon to meet some friends that were also vacationing at the same time as us. Their beachfront property was about a 10 min drive from where we were.

7/30, It was my son's birthday. We took the kids to the Marine exhibit at the Channel Island pavilion at the port and walked through the Harbor Village.

We normally celebrate the kids birthday’s and have them open their gifts in the early afternoon so that they still have plenty time to play with their gifts before bedtime. After the cake, he wanted to stay in the room to build his Gundum figures, so Scott did BBQ ribs for dinner and they were just simply delicious.

7/31, Ventura County Fair. We went to the county fair after breakfast. It was not as crowded as I expected. It was a perfect day with great weather (overcast) to walk around the fairground. A lot of food (which I call unhealthy heart-attack food) and interesting things to see.

8/1, We had heard about this great place right on the beach in Oxnard for breakfast, so Scott and I went on a date to try it out. There were some unique selections on the menu, and my eyes got big as I read through them. I ordered a Cajun style blackened catfish breakfast and Scott had Crab Cakes Benedict. The food tasted pretty good. They were large portions - it was way too much food for a petite lady like me. I had to pack half of my breakfast to go. After we finished eating, we went for a walk along the beach.....

Our friends came to visit us in the afternoon and we took the kids to downtown Ventura. They had good time browsing through the stores and they picked a Thai restaurant for dinner. It was tasty Thai food and it had interesting spices and ingredients - coconut milk, basil, green curry and peanuts....

After the dinner we went back to the condo and the kids watched a movie while I went solo fishing form 6pm - 8pm, and caught a total of 14-16 fish with the fly (3 calico bass, 2 croakers, 1 surf perch, 2 jack smelt and 6-8 rockfish). All fish were safely released after the photos.

8/2, the wind was very strong and harsh in the morning. I could hear it shouting outside of my window. I tucked in bed, with a cup of coffee and read from my iPad. Around noon, we got out of the house and went to an Oxnard Farmer's Market. We bought some fresh fruits and some plants to support the local growers.

The wind finally died down around 4pm. I took my Tenkara rod, went outside, and fly fishing for 4 hours. The fishing was great today and I had a blast with mixed catches of them all - 4 calico bass, 6 surf perches, 5 croakers, 4 jack smelt, lizard fish, 11-13 rockfish......

The sunset was beautiful - the sky and the harbor were dressed in an orange glow. I watched a seagull fly up and down over the ocean. The boats sailed on the golden waves as they returned from their day trips. The harbor was sitting peacefully in the gentle breeze, with the sunset in the background, like a large shadow box picture. I was lost in an amazing moment of breathtaking views. I worried that it would all disappear if I just blinked my eyes. I tried to snap pictures so that I could capture each and every moment of this wonderful sunset. The color changing from gold, to orange, to pink, then to red........

It was the most awesome and fun night that I had on this vacation. I stayed on the dock till 9pm to see the moon dancing on the surface of the water, to enjoy the harbor lights glowing on the ocean waves... To sit under the stars and be surrounded by the blue moonlight, to listen to the waves washing up on the shore and to watch the fish leaping out of the water. The wind kissed my cheeks and it blew through my hair....... Life is good to me. Happiness and beauty surround us everywhere. I appreciate being here to see what I see, to feel what I feel and to enjoy what I have. What else could I ask for on this starry night? As I always say - life is just simply beautiful!.....

WOW!! Another adventure in fishing paradise with a wonderful narrative of your great family trips with a little fishing on the side (grin). A beautiful pictorial of your trip as usual and it looks like the food choices were pretty good also. I am beginning to think you could also have the moniker of “ The Gourmet Food Queen”. I like your fly tying station and if I get time I will post a pic of the one I made. On a side note have you tried the hot glue gun salmon egg trick yet?

DEVOREFLYER, thank you! Most of my vacation is right on the water, I can step out of my door and go fishing in the morning or at night, while the family is still sleeping or resting - a win win situation.... The station is a portable reading station with wheels, I can move it around the house easily to any place that I want to tie flies. Since my husband smokes cigars, he saved some empty wooden boxes for me to store the materials. If you have a chance to post a picture, I'd like to see what is your station looks like..... I haven't tried the hot glue gun salmon eggs yet, I checked on eBay and it seems like they only sell red glue sticks and not the orange color. I'm thinking about ordering some if I can find any orange ones.

Family, fishing and fun, it just doesn't get much better.

Thanks for reading and welcome to FNN.

I got my hot glue here but I do not see it on their web site you might try giving them a phone call. Oh and if you go to their store leave your credit cards and cash locked in your car. You will thank me.

Attached pic is a red oak tying station I made from scrape materials I had in my shop 6+ years ago.
Sorry the pic is a little dark.

Ha, ha, I agree that Bob Marriott's is a 'bad place', with a lot of nice expensive 'toys' for fly fishermen. I'm so glad that I'm sticking with Tenkara fishing and a simple set up. All I need is a $200 rod. No need to buy $300-$12000 reels, or $150-$700 rods. One question that I often ask myself is, why is everything about fly fishing so expensive? Even chicken feathers? I am using my daughter's beading kit for bead head flies instead of $5 packs of 25pc gold beads. The jig head flies that I had in the photo were about $6 per pack at Bass Pro in the fly fishing section. After I bought those, I found out that Big 5 sells them for $2 or $3 dollars.

By the way, I like your station, very cool! Thanks for posting it!

Wow, Alice, great report! I am a bit jealous, I must admit, with our little sunfish catches, etc. But I am scheduled to go on another trip next week.

It's been a long time since I have had the chance to wake up and go fishing right outside or a little hike away, or go fishing right before going to sleep. I am very glad you are having such a good time with your lovely family.

Something weird about this thread: It said there were 15 replies, but I could only see 10, then I reloaded it, and it said there were only 8 replies. Oh well...

Robert, you are not alone. Last year I always woke up by the alam clock and went fishing almost everyday. Since the kids are off school now, I've been lazy to get up early and go fishing. I lay in bed and think, should I go or not, then I lay myself back down and sleep until 9...Ha, ha...

I hope you and Eunice will have fun with your next vacation/fishing trip, she is a good fisherwoman and always out fishes you.

About the post, there is a confusion here. I didn't want to change the titles of my report (from the mountains to the sea), and the report has 3 freshwater fishing trips + saltwater fishing, so I posted my report on both fresh and saltwater fishing sections. Most of my fishing friends are not FNN members, that's why I put my posts in 'all freshwater' so that they would read it.

That's a great site to help cut the budget. Well, we all know that when it comes to fishing, there is no budget for any fishing nut. Thanks for sharing another of your secrets, I hope this is not the last one...lol..

Thanks you, old Pudd fisher!

Wow! Life is good! Thanks for sharing your vacation and really nice photos. You know, so many people are so into catching just big fish, (the bigger, the better) it's fun just to catch any fish, even the little colorful guys!

Thanks! Me too, I hope that fishing will be better soon at the Pudd. I'm thinking next spring the panfish will have recovered. This year I went fishing 3-4 times, and I didn't ever see crappies. Very strange thing.

Thanks for the reply! I'm like you, I'm a fan of crappies and gills. I've been told by many people that I should fish in pay lakes to catch the big fish. But I like to fish for free, the smaller the cost the more fun it is. I won't pay any thing over $10 for an entrance fee. With the amount that I fish, I'd be broke if I go fishing at pay lakes 3-4 times a week, lol.

Hey, crappieluv, I remember you from last year when you replied to my Puddingstone fishing report. Glad that you are still around here. We need more lady fisher energy on this forum, lol. Thank you for your nice comment and I hope that we'll run into each other at the water some day.
