Now, here’s the weekend surf fishing reports!

Competition update as of 7/30/13
Team Pacific Shores – 192 Points
Team Reel Em In – 175 Points

Hit the surf solo for 3 hours Saturday morning before work and again on Sunday for a few hours, trying to earn some points for team Reel Em In. Time was running out and we needed to make a strong push before the end of the month.

Saturday 7/27 (5:30am – 8:30am)
Decided on a solo session to an A.O. that Don (Bachiboy) and I hit a few weeks ago. Last time we were there, we ran into a good Yellow Fin Croaker bite and Don lost a nice legal Halibut at his feet. I thought that it was worth another try…

First half a dozen casts or so in the grey light and I hang a legal Halibut… nice, it’s going to be a good session.
23” Halibut – Released.

Then came a couple of chunky Yellow Fin Croakers…

A few minutes later… a short, just missed!
http://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r135/Wingnut32566/015-1.jpg (http://s143.photobucket.com/user/Wingnut32566/media/015-1.jpg.html)

Throw a little Calico Bass in the mix… shortly after this, I had another nice fish, probably a bigger Calico wrapped me up in some kelp. After a few frustrating minutes trying to free the fish, I lost the MS Anchovy LC. My 10th lost LC so far this year.

Tie on a MaAji Jack pattern LC and re-engaged…
Now, I’ve been in some crazy Yellow Fin Croaker bites before, but the one I ran into Saturday morning was nothing short of spectacular. :EyePop: I always say that the Yellow Fin Croaker are Croakers of the “wrong kind”, because we all want the elusive surf White Sea Bass, but pound for pound, the Yellow Fin Croakers are one of the best fighting fish in the surf. :Big Grin: They give you a great battle from the moment they are hooked until they are laying on the beach.

There was a lot of bait fish in the surf and the YFC was just hammering the LC left and right. There was also a lot of bird activity in the distance too. Within a hour and a half period, I must have fought and shaken off in the surf or beached around 30+ YFC’s. :EyePop: The ones that I thought was at least 16”+, I beached to take a pic, because each fish was worth 2 points in the contest. I ended up catching 7 that was 16” plus. At the end of the session, with a legal Halibut, two short Halibut and two small Calico, I earned 28 points for Team Reel Em In and put us right back into contention. :Guns:

Here are some of the bigger YFC’s that I landed Saturday morning. Lost quite a few more…

Water clarity was quite good Saturday morning... changed overnight.

I changed lures three times Saturday morning. I was catching so many YFC's and shaking them off, the hooks on the LC were getting bent and some even broke off.

Sunday 7/28 (5:30am – 10:30am)
From a competitive point of view, strategically, it would have been wise for me not to share the hot bite with any Team Pacific Shores members. Hey, all is fair in Love and War right? But that is not the S.W.A.T. way, so when my Brothers asked… I gave up the intel and invited them to go back to the A.O. the next morning. :Big Grin: Robert (Murrieta Angler), Don (Bachiboy) and Peter (PTN) came out to join me Sunday morning. Dan (SP Dan) and John (Nipple Twister) were also hitting the surf nearby...

Amazing how conditions changed in less than 24 hours… the swells on Sunday was a bit flatter than Saturday, but the water clarity got worse. Patches of brown, discolored water made some areas unfishable. We just skipped by it and moved to cleaner areas. There were still a heavy bait fish presence and strong bird activity everywhere. The bite weren't nearly as hot as the previous morning, but we still landed some really quality sized Yellow Fin Croakers. I caught 8 of them between 16-18”. These were some of the biggest brutes I’ve seen caught out of the surf.

Big Shovelnose and Leopard Sharks kept bumping into our legs as we work our way down the beach... feels a bit creepy to have something soft bumping into your leg. Like I told Robert and Peter, fish aren't supposed to touch you, lol. A big Leo ran into the back of my legs, causing me to lose my balance and I was flailing around for a couple of seconds trying to stay above water. Robert saw me and had a good laugh. But I got the last laugh… Yo Roberto, I got an extra pair of shades that you can borrow, hahaha :Secret:

The boyz all ready to go...

We had a few double hook-ups and even one triple hook-up.

We worked our way down the 2 mile stretch of rugged beach and out to a rocky point. Robert managed to catch a little Calico Bass and a Barracuda of the rocks on the LC, very cool. I was busy playing around in the tide pools, taking pics of the wildlife.

Robert, we made the best out of the conditions and landed some nice Croakers bro. Great job landing a couple of cool catches from the rocks. You got me scared there for a second when I saw you slip off that rock and into the water. Thanks again for the delicious steak & eggs breakfast my friend and I will be sure to “pay it forward” in your honor. BTW, bummer about your sunglasses... :Big Smile:

Don, thanks for coming out to join us bro. I know you had to engage in some heavy duty negotiations with the Mrs. to get your morning pass, hahaha. You accomplished your goal of neutralizing one of my Team Reel Em In comrades Sunday morning as your catches cancelled each other out. We are back on the same team next month.

Peter, that Little Leo that you caught had us going for a little while. We were hoping that it was a legal Flattie. I’m telling you, it’s too bad that far corner was loaded with kelp or I think we would have killed it there. :Surprised:
BTW, I can barely see you in my rearview mirror bro… hurry and catch up! :Envious:

Have a great week everybody and don’t forget to keep your eyes out for the HG5 registration thread!

Was reminded that my reso was expired....

Those are some oversized croakers! Thats what you get for fishing with the colonel. Everyone cept the croakers were all smiles and there is a good reason...the jedi council wreaked havoc!

Sorry for the short reply but as of two days ago, you have become the enemy! See you on the sand commander...we shall see if my jedi training will pay off.

To much great stuff in the report to single out any one thing. Wish I were there.

Hi ya Brotha Arthur,

Another fun fishing session with friends! :Thumbs Up:

NT and I were just 1.5 miles away and we didn't have nearly that much fish action!

Well tomorrow is the last day of this month's team competition I decided to take the day off and see if I could beach a few more points with my SWAT Brotha and team mate Sidified. I hope that we are met by clean waters!

I just received a text from another Swat Brotha "identity undisclosed" and he will be joining Sid and myself tomorrow morning on this month's last salt :Big Grin: assault!

Thanx Arthur for another fun read with pic's!

Unbelievable report! It's unreal how many fish you guys land. I consider a good day if I catch 10 surf perch, let alone 30+ yfc. I can only pray that I stay in SoCal long enough to cross lines with you... Absolutely stunning pictures of the tide pools too!

Okay, gotta take a break from this work to post. Nice going out there on Saturday sir! Thanks for the invite for round two. Too bad the conditions rolled a little the next day or it may have been game on again...although, have you ever had the croakers go wide open two days in a row? Not sure if the C&R wises them up, but I never seem to plow em down on consecutive days. It was great fishing with all of you again. Sorry I had to cut out without saying a proper farewell. Was hopin to get that text later saying that the corner was clear and that you guys ended up having a legal fest. It'll just have to wait till the next we venture over there. Till then gents...

Another amazing weekend, commander :Thumbs Up:
I almost couldn't believe it when I got the news of the epic yfc frenzy you took part in during your few hours out.
Thanks for carrying the team this month. I tried to make a final attempt for a come from behind victory, but I ended up having a farmfest that day which included a sure legal popping off right at my feet :Embarrassed:
Even though the yfc party didn't stick around for the second day, it looks like you guys had a great time out there.
Nice barracuda, Robert :Big Grin: Looks like all that baitfish presence brought them into the area. I ended up hooking into three of them the following day, only to land one
Great report, and I can't wait for HG5 :Big Grin:

Arturo,
Like I said before, you tore it up on Saturday...
30+ YFC's is just stupid, but not surprising that it happened to you...
I had a fun time with you, Don and Peter on Sunday.
I know you would have preferred for all of us to catch a boat load of fish, but that's just the way it is.
I though for sure you were going down in the surf, from that shark, but your NINJA skills kicked in took care of that...
The picture if Romeo when he is happy, " LOOK MOM, NO NUTS " just cracked me up...
It's always fun to fish with you Bro and I look forward till the next time.

BTW, Why did you have to put my team on alert yesterday...:Dancing Banana:

Peter,
Good seeing you again and thanks for the hat Brotha! :Big Grin:

Don,
You were very lucky to get that pass for the morning.
We knew you had to bail early, so thanks for saving me some cash at breakfast...:Envious:

All of you take care,
