Competition update as of Monday 7/15.
Team Pacific Shores – 130 Points
Team Reel Em In – 101 Points

The S.W.A.T. Teams competition is really heating up with both sides exchanging leads.

I got permission from my “other” Boss to fish this past Saturday and Sunday mornings to help scrape up some points for Team Reel Em In. :Razz:

Saturday 7/13
Another sleepless weekend for me, lol
Friday evening, the Iron Chef and I flipped a coin to see who gets to pick the monthly movie that we’re going to see. I won, whoohoo… and she had to suffer through Pacific Rim, not her kind of movie. :LOL: I’m surprised that she stayed up for the entire show this time. Last month, she fell asleep halfway through World War Z, lol
After dinner, we attended the late show and got home around 2:00am. I hopped on my laptop for about an hour, then got my surf gear together and left the house at 4:00am.

I decided to hit up an A.O. that I haven’t been to in about 8 months. Recent intel tells me that the area was a bit weedy and tough to fish, thus the lack of notable catches from this spot. But I decided to give it a shot and find out for myself… :Idea:

In the surf by 5:15am…
Cool and clear morning, light onshore wind, swells 2-3 ft in 8-10 second intervals, outgoing low tide, moderate salad condition, water temperature approximately 70 degrees, water clarity fair, moderate bird presence, moderate to heavy bait fish presence.

The first thing that I noticed was the bait fish activity. Lots of bait fish dimpling the surface and popping around here and there. A lot of life in the surf, I saw Leopard Sharks, Shovelnose, Rays and big Corbina cruising the surf line. I hooked up and landed three or four Yellow Fin Croakers in the first 10-15 minutes ( no points, too small), typical YFC grey light bite.

Then out of the corner of my eye, I saw a fish jump out of the water near a boiler rock. Made a quick cast in that direction and hooked up to a small Calico Bass (1 point).

Got a few hit and miss for the next half an hour and then a solid hit with heavy pressure and some head shakes… and I was hoping that this would be the Flat Fish of the right kind . :Razz:
Yes it was! A solid 23” legal Halibut released to chase the LC another day (10 points!).

Got another couple of short Halibut (1 point each) after that and ended up with a little bonus… A little 14” Corbina on the LC (5 points).

Back out of the surf by 8:30am with 18 points… putting Team Reel Em In into the points lead! But that won’t last for long… check out Robert’s (Murrieta Angler) report! :EyePop:


Sunday 7/14
Went to the office Saturday and that evening, the Iron Chef and I attended a wedding reception for a couple of friends of ours. Had a great time eating, drinking and dancing with our friends until late… :Big Grin:
I got home about 3:00am, tucked the little lady in and put my surf gear in the car. Left the house again at 4:00am… still with no sleep. :Tired:

I was going to go back to the previous morning’s A.O. with Lieutenant Bones, but Mike sent me a text while I was at the wedding reception telling me that he can’t make it so I decided to go to a different spot instead… now why in the heck did I do that??? Lol :Neutral:

Got to the spot and saw Thien (Bloox8) gearing up… Ahhh yes, a Team Pacific Shores member… fishing with the enemy, lol :Wink:
We hit the beach and I told Thien to take the lead… because I didn’t want to take his S.W.A.T. “Induction” fish, hahahaha. A little later, Don joins us in the surf… Uh oh, another team Pacific Shores Member, now it’s two on one… no worries, I got this! But just as I was starting to get boxed in from both sides by Don and Thien, here comes my back up. Frank (iLLest), a fellow Team Reel Em In Member shows up. Two on two, now that’s more like it. :Twisted: Frank and I ended up attacking the North end of the beach while Don and Thien stayed to work the South end. Conditions were a bit swelly and rough. The fishing action was pretty dismal and I fished only until around 9:00am, but managed to carve out 7 more points for the team with a couple of short Yellow Fin Croakers (0 point), a short Calico (1 point), a short Halibut (1 point) and a rare surf caught Sargo (5 points).

So, I was feeling pretty good, thinking that I padded the lead for Team Reel Em In… until I got back to the car and saw Robert’s (Murrieta Angler) text. My goodness, he blew me out of the water with his fantastic morning and he wasn’t even done yet! :Envious: Check out his report! Congrats Roberto… Team Pacific Shores is back in the lead and then some! Come on Team Reel Em In, we got some catching up to do! :Wink:

You are an inspiration to us all commander! Somehow, you make time for Iron Chef, the pugs, work, and still manage to out fish us all! I am glad to call you my friend and my leader. Thank you for always smiling in your pictures...it reminds me that smiling is contagious. Look at Don, Frank and Thien's faces, they got skunked and they are still smiling! That is what it means to inspire!

I still have high hopes for my new spot cleaning up some day, and laying the wood to a few keepers, but alas, it won't go away for us up here yet. I finally caught a 20#er on the boat last week, and believe it or not, its my first halibut THIS YEAR!!! We are remaining patient, and keeping an optimistic outlook. Oh, and i took a nap after fishing too lol.

WooooH HG5!! Each event I’ve participated in has been better than the last, so I am excited to see what we have in store for this one. A S.W.A.T. edition LC is already crazy enough :Shocked:!!

It was a nice surprise running into you, Don and Frank that day. To be honest, I knew I was bound to run into somebody that beautiful Sunday morning :Smile: Too bad it was pretty slow on the surf though, but I did manage to get a double calico hookup in one retrieve, which was pretty damn awesome, so it wasn’t too bad!! One came out to 14” and the other was 17.5” !

Don, It was fun fishing by your side. I have to admit, you had me a little scared when you were fishing the edge of those rocks. I was prepared to jump in and save a brother, but luckily the conditions weren’t TOO extreme.
BTW, can you pm me the pics you took of my double calico hookup?

Frank, sorry I didn’t get to give you a proper greeting. I’ll definitely make sure I do it next time. Good fishing with you bro.

I wish that I could fish more Roberto, but once a week or once every couple of weeks will have to do for now... until I fully scale back my operations to SoCal. :Wink: Once that's complete by the end of the year, I may find a little more time to fish. :Envious:

I still have high hopes for my new spot cleaning up some day, and laying the wood to a few keepers, but alas, it won't go away for us up here yet. I finally caught a 20#er on the boat last week, and believe it or not, its my first halibut THIS YEAR!!! We are remaining patient, and keeping an optimistic outlook. Oh, and i took a nap after fishing too lol.
Seems like it's taking forever for the salad to clear up in the Northern territory Mikey. :Neutral: But when it does, I'm sure you will more than make up for lost time. WooooH HG5!! Each event I’ve participated in has been better than the last, so I am excited to see what we have in store for this one. A S.W.A.T. edition LC is already crazy enough :Shocked:!!

It was a nice surprise running into you, Don and Frank that day. To be honest, I knew I was bound to run into somebody that beautiful Sunday morning :Smile: Too bad it was pretty slow on the surf though, but I did manage to get a double calico hookup in one retrieve, which was pretty damn awesome, so it wasn’t too bad!! One came out to 14” and the other was 17.5” !

Don, It was fun fishing by your side. I have to admit, you had me a little scared when you were fishing the edge of those rocks. I was prepared to jump in and save a brother, but luckily the conditions weren’t TOO extreme.
BTW, can you pm me the pics you took of my double calico hookup?

Frank, sorry I didn’t get to give you a proper greeting. I’ll definitely make sure I do it next time. Good fishing with you bro.

Quick report! Saturday 7/20/13
SP Dan asked me where he should go to get away from the high surf over the weekend and I suggested a sheltered area. This area happens to be the Short Halibut (Pancakes) Capitol of the world, lol. :LOL: Dan promptly racked up 27 short Halibut and 27 points for Team Pacific Shores over the course of 2 days. :Envious: I think I'm going to make IHOP an off limit zone for next month's competition, lol

Anyways... I get a text from Dan that it was a wide open bite of Pancakes on the dropshot. I figured that if there are that many short Flatties, there has to be a few legals in the mix and you would have a better chance catching them on the LC than the dropshot. So I dropped in behind Dan and carpet bombed the area for a couple of hours. :Twisted:
Got 4 short Halibut and 2 barely legal Halibut. 24 points for Team Reel Em In. :Big Grin:
One week left in the contest, let's go team Reel Em In... we have some catching up to do! :Envious:
