With Team Reel Em In taking the lead yesterday and some of them going fishing today, I decided to get out there and try to get some points.
I decided to try a spot that I hadn't been to in a while, further South than normal.
I arrived to the spot at 5:00 sharp, only to see 3 bait and wait guys and also 2 fly fisherman....:Surprised:
It was slightly cloudy, about 68 degrees, humid, water temp at least 72 degrees, waves 1-3 every 12-15 seconds, and swell 2 ft. The low tide was around 9:15 @ .90 ft.

I started fan casting, since i was alone this morning and was fortunate enough to get a hit about 30 minutes into my session. {I accidentally erased the photo from my new phone}
I normally only get small halibut, perch and YFC's at this beach, but i needed to help my team get some points.
So I had one for the books...

Another 20 minutes goes by and I get a nice thump and I knew it was a bigger model;
http://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r135/Wingnut32566/Wingnut%2012/Robert9.jpg (http://s143.photobucket.com/user/Wingnut32566/media/Wingnut%2012/Robert9.jpg.html)
Threw the tape on it and it measured just under 22".....SO CLOSE!

Oh well, that's 2 points and it's not even 6:00 yet.
I kept working my way down South and i get a quick perch hit and hook set, it was an 8-9 incher and back into the water with it, NO POINTS...
It was about 6:30 now and the beach was getting really busy. There were at least 12-15 anglers and tons of people walking around, getting some exercise.
I had just cast out and upon retrieval, i notice some bait fish popping out of the water, in front of my lure....
I tell myself, maybe there is a WSB out there, i cast out again, nothing.
I cast out again and before the LC has a chance to dive, BOOM!!!
It gets hit on the top of the water and this awesome fish is dancing on top of the water for me....:Dancing Banana:
It puts up a nice fight, peeling drag a couple of times, but it's no match for my new line, LC and drag set just right.
Just then, another fish pops out of the water and i see it's a second one...
I'm thinking, possible legal WSB, but after a couple of minutes, I get a good look at the fish and it isn't a WSB?!?
WHAT THE _ _ _ _!

As I am getting closer to the shore, one of the fly fisherman comes over and asks if I want a picture with it. he then says it's a corbina, I look at him and say, " No Bro, That Is My First Ever........... CORVINA.....
http://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r135/Wingnut32566/Wingnut%2012/Robert1-2.jpg (http://s143.photobucket.com/user/Wingnut32566/media/Wingnut%2012/Robert1-2.jpg.html)

I was so stoked, just look at those fangs!?
http://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r135/Wingnut32566/Wingnut%2012/Robert2.jpg (http://s143.photobucket.com/user/Wingnut32566/media/Wingnut%2012/Robert2.jpg.html)

Got some more shots and then the tape comes out, it measures 26", on the nose.
http://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r135/Wingnut32566/Wingnut%2012/Robert5.jpg (http://s143.photobucket.com/user/Wingnut32566/media/Wingnut%2012/Robert5.jpg.html)

http://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r135/Wingnut32566/Wingnut%2012/Robert6.jpg (http://s143.photobucket.com/user/Wingnut32566/media/Wingnut%2012/Robert6.jpg.html)

http://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r135/Wingnut32566/Wingnut%2012/Robert3.jpg (http://s143.photobucket.com/user/Wingnut32566/media/Wingnut%2012/Robert3.jpg.html)

http://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r135/Wingnut32566/Wingnut%2012/Robert4.jpg (http://s143.photobucket.com/user/Wingnut32566/media/Wingnut%2012/Robert4.jpg.html)

The guy asked if i was going to keep it and i said, NOPE!!
It took a few minutes, but it gave a good kick and swam off like a champ...

I checked my line and sure enough, it had some kinks. I re-tied threw in the same spot, nothing, threw again, nothing, one more time...FISH ON BABY!!!
http://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r135/Wingnut32566/Wingnut%2012/Robert7.jpg (http://s143.photobucket.com/user/Wingnut32566/media/Wingnut%2012/Robert7.jpg.html)
This one didn't dance, but it still gave me a couple of drag peelers as well as the first.
The fly guys were like, AGAIN?!?
I just smiled and brought it to the shore;
This one was hooked through the gill and bleeding pretty bad.
I took the hooks out, as soon as I could, measured it and put it back in the water, but it was no use.....
I ended up giving it to a guy who had no fish, who was there before me.

It was now about 7:00 and I was completely content with my fish count for the morning.
I helped the team get 32 points, got a sweet new species and the sun was starting to come out.....

As I was walking out, it took at least an hour to get back to my truck.
Alot of people were asking what the fish was.
One angler comes up to me, ask what it is, I tell him and he says no it isn't.......:Argument:
I say yes it is a Corvina, he says, they are only caught at the Salton sea. I look at him and say, " Really, you ask what it is, I tell you and you tell me no!?! "
What a buffoon!!!!

I ended up leaving, about 8:30 and head over to a lil mexican joint, for some chiliquilles. After I order, I send Wingnut a message and he says he got some point fish as well.
He also says my teammates didn't fare so well....
I decide that I am going to go to one other spot and see if anything wanted to play.

I get there around 10:30. Carlsbad had Ocean Blvd closed for a bike race, and i made the mistake of driving up the coast by street, instead of the freeway..:Rolls Eyes:.
I was lucky I got a parking spot at my regular place, but the parking lot was full and alot of people were walking down to the the beach.
I get to the water and I am forced to work my way North.
No problem, i see a friend of mine, Roy, and he is long rodding it.
he had just hooked up to a nice 15" sargo. After he is through handling his business, he starts walking over to me and just then....THUMP!!
Sweet, a nice halibut is on the line.
It makes one pull and that's it. I get it up on the shore and break it's spine....
http://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r135/Wingnut32566/Wingnut%2012/Robert8.jpg (http://i977.photobucket.com/albums/ae255/gudgersfishing/HALI/Pictures/IMG_20130714_111346_zps74da7c59.jpg?t=1373852135)
It taped out at 24" and it was going home with me, or should I say, somewhere other than the water.

The best part is about to come.
A friend of mine, Betty, lost her husband about a year ago. When I see her, at work, she always has a hug for me and asks how my weekend or week was.
We chat for a while, before I have to leave and she alwys says, " Boy, I sure could go for some fresh fish! "
Well, on my way home, I called her up and asked if i could bring over some fresh halibut.....
She said of course and I drove from South orange County, to the 76, across to the 15, up to the 60, West to Ontario and dropped off some nice filets for her...
I ended up driving over 240 miles and it was some of the best miles I ever put on my truck!

I'm not so good at quoting scripture, but it reads somewhere in the Bible, to take care of the women, children and elderly.....CHECK!

Hope everyone has a great week, God Bless,

Robert

Your a good man Charlie Brown.
With that much fun in one day you knew you would give back in someway.

And don't worry about those salton sea comments. I don't know anyone that has caught one there in years. Back in the day sure.

Dude!!! You're my hero. When I grow up, I wanna be just like you. What a day, climaxed by an amazing showing of generosity and grace. Definitely a banner day for the records...to add on to what has been a stellar year for you. You are one of the most deserving people I've ever met and this is just reward for all you do for everyone else.:UDaMan:

Congrats bro!!!
Don

PS - Sorry we couldn't add on to your points. Thien and I had to jump on the rocks to dust off the stripe. Got a couple of nice fish but they weren't point qualifiers without the sand under our feet. :Big Grin:

Very cool Robert. I wonder if the Corvina population is increasing ? Do the Pacific models get big like the Baja ones ? Those Salton Sea ones 20 -40 lbs were common back in the day before they all died.
Seems as if yours is a bigger model from what I've seen out of SD ?

Found some info; I believe the SD ones are Shortfin Corvina and the Orange Mouth Corvina gets big along with the Cobia in the Baja Gulf.

http://i455.photobucket.com/albums/qq280/fedu69/COUTO_WR_CORVINA.jpg (http://media.photobucket.com/user/fedu69/media/COUTO_WR_CORVINA.jpg.html)

Corvina is a general name for a boatload (pardon the expression) of fish found in many different parts of the world. They belong to the scaienidae family, which is better known as "drums or croakers." Drum fish and croaker fish are differentiated by whether they produce a drumming sound or a croaking sound when they pop their heads above the water (we're not making this up). There are 270 species within the drums and croakers family, ranging from less than a quarter of a pound to hundreds of pounds. In Central America alone, there are dozens of varieties

Although drums and croakers are primarily saltwater fish, and therefore theoretically fine for use in ceviche, James Peterson, author of Fish & Shellfish (Canada, UK), cautions against eating them raw. They often contain parasites, he says, which is the general reason you don't make ceviche with freshwater fish. Cooking renders the parasites harmless, as does freezing for at least 24 hours at 0°F, but the acid of ceviche does not.

Finding parasite-free, impeccably fresh fish is the great challenge of making ceviche these days. Peterson says he used to tell people to rush home with their fish and make ceviche at once, but now says unless the fish was previously frozen or you have some sure-fire way of determining that it is free of parasites, freeze it yourself for at least 24 hours, slowly thaw it in the refrigerator, and then start cutting limes.

In this country, drums and croakers on the market include Atlantic Croaker, Black Drum, Red Drum, Kingfish, Spot, Spotted or Speckled Sea Trout, Weakfish, White Sea Bass, Orangemouth Corvina, Yellowfin Corvina, Golden Corvina, Shortfin Corvina, etc., etc. (Drums and croakers are totally unrelated to either bass or trout, so there is simply no truth in advertising in the fish world.) More of these varieties come from the Pacific, and are more available on the West Coast.

Oh Captain, my captain:

There is a reason that you are the one who guides this ship called Team Pacific Shores. So I get a text that you scored big. In the middle of service, I get another text that you are still going. The sermon was about serving others. So, I think, Robert is our captain and we should be out serving him, but he is not above us, he is out there serving us! This, my friend and brother, is why I thank the Good Lord that I met you. You lead by example and then simply brush off your greatness with humility and modesty.

You have another epic day under your belt and you ended it with a good deed. How many mouths did you feed yesterday? I am glad that we not only share in our love of fishing, but God as well.

Have a great week!.

Ken

P.S. I will be somewhat out of the scene for the rest of the month. I am sorry, but I have something super important that needs my full attention. I will keep you guys in my prayers and thoughts.
