So, I’ve had a recent addition to my family. With the recent birth of my daughter, I figured I’d seen the last of the surf for a while. Well, like attacking any new A.O., I took a step back, evaluated the terrain in front of me, and formulated a game plan.

First, get “honey-do” points to prime my wife for the BIG question...“Can I go fishing for a little while?” My plan was to get out for a quick morning session during the week so that I could even see if it was feasible to ask for hallpasses during the long weekend. I had work to do, so I stayed up till 1am to clear that path. Then I took diaper and feeding duties throughout the night to give her rest. The next morning I hit her with the question...and she said “sure”.:Dancing Banana: I told her that I’d feed my son breakfast and get him ready for school.

Day 1 - TESTING GROUND

I dropped my son off and headed to a local beach. I didn’t expect much but shortly after arriving to the A.O. I hook up, solid...or so I thought. I feel good weight on the end and I get the tell tale signs of headshakes. After a short battle, it comes unbuttoned.:Rolls Eyes: I’m figuring, “Oh well, I’m just REAL lucky to be out here at all.” So, I keep working down the beach. I get a couple perch bites but nothing is sticking. Right before I’m about to call it a day, I get another take. This time I DRIVE the hook home. Again, good weight, headshakes, even a little line pull from the reel. I’m thinking, “I got you this time you :Censored:” Well, Poseidon decided to slap some reality back into my melon and I pull the hook again. I head out and call my “buddy” Nate (BBQ Sushi). As I tell him about my losses (and expect a little sympathy), he says, “well, to be honest, I’m kinda glad you lost those fish...since we’re not on the same team anymore.” Wow, this dang monthly contest is getting SERIOUS! Okay, so this is how it’s gonna be eh? Well, that was only a small taste of what was to come.

I figure I’ve got a little system going here and I have to take some serious steps to see if my efforts to gain hallpasses is going to pan out to a working procedure. My wife’s relatives are coming to town from up north, so I figure I can use my wife’s Uncle Steve as further leverage to gain hallpasses. I tell her, “Well, it’s too bad I won't be able to take Uncle Steve fishing this time around” and she says, “Go ahead, just let him know ahead of time so he can bring his gear.”:Big Smile: So, I let him know the plan and think, “wow, I can really milk this.” I go on to tell her that I should probably do a trip on the morning of the 4th to scout out where to take him...and she agreed! When I tell the Commander about my plans, he informs me that he had talked to Nate earlier. They were both having a laugh and scheming on how to have my hallpasses revoked! Nate was gonna have his wife talk to mine and tell her how I’m fishing too much and that she should put her foot down. What the :Censored:?!!! You guys are SERIOUS about this competition aren’t you?!!! I immediately call Nate and he’s busting up, and says, “Well, we figured it was time to play dirty and stop you from pumping out any points.” Okay, well, extra motivation to gain hallpasses.

Day 2 - SCOUTING MISSION

So, I make plans to try and hit an “old faithful” A.O. at greylight. I had planned to wake up around 4am, but my daughter decides that 2:45 would be a great time for me and requires her changing/feeding a little earlier than planned. By the time she decides she’s ready to go back to sleep, I was wide awake and not going to get much more sleep, so I decide to head out early. I get to the A.O. and it’s still pitch black. Even though it’s dark, I can see huge clumps of kelp piled on the shore and after a few casts, I knew this was not going to be a great place to stay. At this point, I’m kinda glad my daughter got me here early cuz if I had arrived at my intended time, I woulda stuck it out knowing that my window to fish was too small to do much exploring.

I move to plan B and work the next A.O. for about an hour and a half with only a small YFC to show for it. There’s not a lot of time to do much else and figure maybe I should just head home. Well, on the way home I decide to check out just one more spot, if nothing else, to see if one of the guys was there and say “hello”. He wasn’t there, but the conditions looked kinda nice, so I figured, “What the heck? Might as well make a couple of casts while I’m here.” I get on the sand and, sure enough, on my fourth cast...HOOKUP!!! It feels decent but I’m figuring it’s probably just a nice YFC. When I get it close, I see the nice yellow tail, but wait...this guy has vertical bars!:EyePop: WSB!!! I get him on shore and know right away it isn’t legal, so with a quick pict, I send him on his way. Cool...5 points for my team!!! Next cast, BAM! I hook another. This one feels bigger, but I know it’s still probably another short. Right as I’m about to get him to the sand, he unbuttons.:Rolls Eyes: I work the area for another 15 minutes but figured I better get the heck outta Dodge and not push my luck with the Mrs.

I text Command and tell Arthur that his soldier didn’t do his job and that I made my escape from house arrest...and scored!:Dancing Banana: I leave a voicemail for Nate and receive the following text: “YOU :Censored:!!! Where did you score that?” Well, my response was immediate...“Dockweiler, uhhh yea that’s it. Dockweiler...that’s where I went. Lol!” “Honest...would I lie to you?”:Secret: Well, what else was I supposed to say...all’s fair in love and war, right?

So, later that night, I made the plans to hit the beach with Uncle Steve the next morning.

Day 3 - MORNING FULL OF ACTION

Based on some intel, I decided to head over to a different A.O. at greylight, because I wasn’t feeling great about the tide situation even if I had scored a ghost at the previous day’s beach. We get there, suit up and make our way onto the sand. Conditions were great and about 15 minutes into the session, Uncle Steve scores the first victim...and nice chunky YFC. Then another. Then another! We had been seeing nice spots of bait, but after the third hookup, the water starts erupting with fish boiling in front of him. We start hooking up like crazy, but it’s all YFC and perch. I hadn’t quite made it to the position with structure that I wanted to fish, but figured with all the commotion, maybe some calicos or flatties might join the fun. I lost count of all the YFC we got, but I added 4 bsp to the mix, one making a solid 13”, and finally I get a calico...all 6-7” of him. By far the smallest calico I’ve ever taken on an LC. I get another and it’s a little more respectable, but Uncle Steve gets the biggest of the morning which looks to be right around legal. The action fizzled out after about 20 minutes to a half hour and we make our way to the structure that I was sure would yield more checkers. Unfortunately we just manage a couple of more YFC. None of mine worth very size worthy, but a couple of Steve’s were pushing 17-18”...really nice fish.

Steve was on fire!!!

I was fully willing to let the rest of the weekend go without fishing. I figured, I’m satisfied with getting a couple of days out of this, but that was a dirty move by our opponents. I’m going out for more points if she’ll let me. Might as well as long as I have Uncle Steve to help pursuade my wife. So, that night, while having dinner with family, I ask Uncle Steve, “Wanna try a different A.O. in the morning?” His response was immediate, “Ohhh, don’t twist my arm!”

Day 4 - TIME TO PILE ON SOME POINTS!

We head out to our next A.O., again, at greylight. By this time, I’m a zombie. I had been taking the all of the nightly feeding/changing duties, and having festivities and family over the long weekend meant not going to sleep before midnight. *NOTE to fathers out there...you want hallpasses? Suck it up and sleep after the kids get a little (or a lot) older. You also might want to kick the wife out of the house every once in a while and send her shopping, to run errands or whatever she wants to go out and do. Just tell her that you'll take the kids..."don't worry about it, go have some time to yourself." This works WONDERS for gaining hallpass points...might hurt the wallet a little though.

Again we arrive at greylight and, 10 minutes into our session, I get HAMMERED! I can feel that this is a good fish and work it up to see the silhouette of a nice calico in the little light that we had. It tapes out at 19” and I’m figuring that this is going to be a great morning. We work down the beach without a scratch over the next 20 minutes but once we get to some structure, I get a pancake to start the ball rolling again. Three casts later, another pancake. Then the calicos show their hand and start blowing up in some nearby kelp.:EyePop: I make a cast into the danger zone and sure enough, pull out a decent checker, but know that one of the fish I saw boil up was a bigger model. I keep hitting the spot and end up with my 3rd short flattie. The action slows to a hault so we try to get out on some rocks nearby but the tide had started to come up too fast and I figured it’d be too dangerous to try to get out there. When we get back to the beach, I tell Steve to take the “A” position and sure enough he goes bendo HARD! He’s trying to get fish outta the danger zone but this big boy didn’t get that big by being stupid. It wraps him up in the structure and, after trying to work it out for a few minutes, the hooks pull for no glory. Unfortunately, that would be it for Steve’s action for the morning. For me, there was more to come. We start working back toward our point of origin and I manage pancake number 4. This session has already turned out to be one of my most productive. So, as we’re about to leave, I tell Steve that there’s one more spot of structure that I want to hit before we leave. Sure enough, I get SLAMMED and this time, I’m the one that gets humbled into the kelp. After some work, the hooks pull and this fish wins his freedom. A few casts later, HOOKUP! Pancake number 5 hits the beach. I keep casting to the spot and again, HOOKUP! This time as I’m getting the flattie to the sand it unbuttons in about two inches of water. I dive on him and get my hand around his tail, but he manages to give me the slip and wins his freedom. We keep at the spot and after slapping my LC on the water for the millionth time to get salad off the hooks, the line parts and the lure goes flying off.:Rolls Eyes: I’m figuring that Poseidon was ready for an offering since I had such an epic day, but while working the area over for the next 15 minutes, I see the lost LC come floating by! Wow, how freakin lucky can I be? Can't ask for much more than that from Poseidon. So, after that we decided that we had milked this hallpass for all it was worth and we had better head for the hills.

Here are the beauty shots for the session...

Big Checker for first blood

So, Uncle Steve had to leave early the next morning so I couldn’t use him again as an excuse to take another hallpass. My energy level was at a minimum so I wasn’t so sure I wanted one.:Embarrassed: But, after waking up for feeding/diaper duties at 4am, I was feeling like maybe I could squeeze out one more day of the surf. I took a chance and ran it by my wife but she had plans for us that morning so I thought I’d better not push my luck.:LOL: It was a great weekend, but I guess I had missed out on some residual fireworks that morning. That’s a story for someone else to tell...

The commander has a follow-up report that he will be adding to this for your viewing pleasure!

Hope you enjoyed the read.

Don, even though I replied to your texts re these sessions, here is my official response....YOU ROCK!

First of all, you got a good woman on your hands. Let her know that I said so and milk it for hall pass points. Second of all, my family congratulates you again on the birth of your daughter. Can't wait until H4G 5 to get the families together!

Second, it looks like over these past few sessions, you have managed to take about have the species available in soCal. One of everything huh? Amazing. While I was out on the hunt for the big one, you played it smart and racked up points the old fashioned way...quantity! ...and some quality in there--that's a piggy calico!

Third, apparently Dockweiler didn't work out for me on Sunday. Should have listened to Arthur and tried the beach next door. Anyways, for those on Team Reel em in, I would continue to try Dockweiler since you never know when it picks up again.

Fourth, thanks for continuing to try to get me on my induction fish with your intel. Amazing what this brotherhood/sisterhood does for each other. I wish my meager addition to the team was a little bigger.

Last, through my bond with you as a fellow father of a toddler and newborn, I got your back. Let me know if you guys need anything baby-related from baby things to mental support.

Thanks for the multi-report and pics!

P.S. Uncle Steve looks like he comes down here well prepared! Congratulate him on his catches for me!

Brother Don, nice job earning some nice points for Team Pacific Shores. Didn't I tell you that we're going to close the gap by the end of the weekend?
You sure are "resourceful" in finding ways to get permission to fish, lol :Envious:
Nate and I will have to find a more effective way to influence your wife's decisions...
Playing dirty? Yes, all is fair in Love and War... :Big Smile:

The Reports...

I'm super busy this week, so I'm going to do a quick piggy back report of mostly photos to Don's thread. Thanks Don! :Big Grin:

As some of you already know, there's a little contest going on internally with S.W.A.T. We broke off into two teams and challenge each other to see which team can catch more fish and earn the most points. This will be an ongoing monthly contest and this month has gotten off to a fast start. Both teams are neck and neck in the point standings in what will surely be a close contest all the way until the end.

As of today, Monday 7/8/13.
The Point Standings are as follows:
Team Pacific Shores = 84 Points
Team Reel Em In = 76 Points

I was able to get out there for a couple of days over the 4th of July Holiday and contributed some points to Team Reel Em In. Before the 4th we were 20 points behind... it's much closer now.

I did a solo session 4th of July morning in SD County to a spot I haven't been to in over a year.
Threw the LC from grey light until 10:00am for a decent fish count. Nothing big or legal, but gathered some precious points for the team. :Big Grin:
Fish count: (1) Short White Sea Bass, (3) Yellow Fin Croakers, (2) Barred Surf Perch, (4) Short Halibut.

Here are some pics from the 4th of July morning.

Sunday 7/7.

Hit the local surf with SP Dan and Ken (Skunked4life). I could only fish until about 9:00am so we met up and hit a small beach area hard. The fishing was tough, at least it was for me for the first couple of hours... Dan got a 21" short Halibut, But ken and I didn't even get a bump on the LC... around 7:30am, I told Ken that I was going to hop over to the next beach. Ken says that he will have to leave soon so he will hang around the area. Dan has already worked his way 1/2 mile down in the opposite direction so I told Ken to tell Dan where I was going and he's welcome to join me when he gets back.

It turned out to be the right call for me as I was able to find the target species! :Thumbs Up:
In less than an hour, I landed (2) Yellow Fin Croakers, a short Calico Bass, (3) short Halibut and a 23" legal Halibut (K.I.A.). Earned some serious points for Team Reel Em In. :Dancing Banana:
I had to leave so I left with them still biting... I hate it when that happens.
Shot Dan a text and told him to get to this A.O. ASAP. Dan came over after I left and caught some nice Calico and lost a huge Halibut. But that's his story to tell...
I was telling Dan and Ken that I should have stuck to my gut instinct and fish this beach at grey light instead of where we started. Hindsight is always 20/20.

Hey Brotha Arthur,

You called it Sir :Thumbs Up: .... but we had decided between ourselves to put Ken on a more proven hole first ... for his :BFish: qualifier.
Our hearts were aimed in the correct direction .... putting one of our brotha's before our selves!
Ken was first on our minds that morning and the importance of him beaching his entry fish was at the top of our list. Oh well .... It will happen soon Ken!

I was going to head over to the next AO and catch one ... but decided to stay put ... and that I would pull a Wingnut and head down the beach and catch them all!
Well that plan didn't turn out so well .... nor did the fish numbers that I had hoped for.
Now ... second guessing myself ... maybe I should have :EyePop: zagged left when I had choose to :EyePop: zigg right! ha ha ha! Then later I heard that you pulled the ol' "Hey Baba Lou!.... exit stage left" ... and "Hey Rocky" .... watch me pull a rabbit out of my hat!" ..... :Envious: Ggrrrrrrrrrrrr!

Hence the old saying ..."the best laid plans of both mice and men"! Well :Rolls Eyes: .... it's back to the cheese cutting table for me!

I received your departing text with legal in hand.... and "Congratulations to you Sir .... on yet another great :UDaMan: session"!

I really enjoyed hooking up with both you and Ken on Sunday! Fishing with you guys just brings out the best in me ... thanks men!

We had ourselves a lot of good times and a lot of :Big Smile::Applause: laughs all around!

Thanx for the fun read with pic's Sir!

Commander: First things first, let's head back to rattlesnake country...I am really losing faith in my chances of an induction fish and see very few alternatives...I will NOT enjoy it though :Secret::mad: Your's and Dan's generosity when it came to putting me up in that hole was amazing to say the least! All of the conditions were pretty much set: swells (near perfect), tide (near perfect), temperature (around 70 degrees), bait fish presence (some)...anyways, I was more about fishing with you and Dan that day than anything else. Otherwise, I could have gone down to Don's BSP/YFC/Calico honey hole down south for a few points. Thank you so much for joining us and I am thankful that you were rewarded for your kindness.

Dan: three trips in a row with you and I managed only two shorts. since 3 is better than 2, I say that the weekend was a success! Rather be skunked fishing with my brothers than all alone. When the guys told me that you were a marine, I thought, oh this guy is going to be tough...I already get tough love from Robert (not complaining Robert...I totally appreciate your mentoring!!!) but I thought "great, another leatherneck..." YOU ARE sooooo mellow and freakin' HILARIOUS! Thanks for making me laugh almost the entire time!

Parting words: Though I am riding a mild fishing skunk once again, I cannot be happier. I embrace the brotherhood's/sisterhood's underlying policy of giving and paying it forward. "When you focus on being a blessing, God makes sure that you are always blessed in abundance." - Joel Osteen

Don, I thoroughly enjoyed reading your post!

I've just got to warn you though.....all those hallpasses you've been getting. Well, I can assure you they are being tallied as points for something you'll be sitting home paying for later on.

If there is anyone out there deserving of the bounty you've brought to the beach lately it's you......Keep up the good work and I'm expecting some personal best coming your way very soon.:Thumbs Up:

Arthur, It was good to get your update and I'm sure you are going to have plenty more points to add to the board before the month is over. Great job Arthur! :Thumbs Up:

Hey Brotha Don,

Have had an intense day so far .... so this will sweet and to the point:

Don .... from the can't catch a qualifying fish to "Colonel Croaker" to being shot out of a cannon and landing on your feet running as "Super Dad the Hall-Passing Fish Slayer"! :UDaMan: You are awesome Brotha! It seems as though there's nothing you can't catch these days.... you and your stix are on fire!

It has been my complete pleasure to follow your reads on all of your epic fishing adventures and as well as following the growth of your family with the very recent addition of your beautiful baby daughter. The pictures that you posted of your daughter were amazingll!

Thanx for sharing your family, your tails and adventures with all of us Brotha Don! :Thumbs Up:

I look forward to our next session in the salt Sir!

SP Dan <"))><

Thanks brother Dan! The newest member of our family is keeping me a little sleep deprived, but it's all worth it to keep me out there on the sand. Thien I and started waving at someone on the rocks a bit of a ways from us yesterday...thought it was you till the commander informed us that you hadn't come out that way for the morning. I think someone in a red hat is out there posing as you! We'll have to get back out there together again soon sir.

Hey Don.

Your doing very well in the water. What a report. Heck!! What a great set of fish.

Hope all at home is well and give your wife a hug for us. I will say you are a blessed man. Enjoy all that you have.

Noriko says congratulations again and can't wait to see the newest PB.

WWO

Thanks Bill, and give a big thanks to Noriko for us! We're looking forward to seeing everyone and showing off our prize catch.:Big Smile:

Hey Bro, wish you had made it down with us that Friday. Might have been able to dub you Lt. Col. Croaker. Uncle Steve was laying into some biguns. As for Saturday, gotta go with where it's been hot and that beach was lookin' prime. I got lucky, the fish wanted to play. Just remember every little point counts, so your contributions, no matter how small, make a difference. Just gotta keep getting out there, when hallpasses permit, cuz you never know when that 15-20 point fish is going to take you for the ride of your life. Not sure I'm scoring every species out there, but I think El Capitan sure the heck is.:EyePop: I just want another chance at that escaped jailbird. Hopefully soon. Thanks for the kind words. Looking forward to hookin up with you again soon...and giving you that damned rod in my garage! It's tempting the crap outta me.

:Big Smile: [COLOR=#000000][SIZE=3]

Man, I can't keep up with you. I'm sitting here catching a nice bunch of fish thinking, "This isn't enough. Arthur's gonna erase these points in three casts!" It's like that little girl in the commercial..."If you get some, you want more and if you like it, you want more!" You and you're dang predictions!:Rolls Eyes: This is shaping up to be one heck of a close competition. Thank God for Robert pulling some SERIOUS rabbits out of his hat. When we were painting stripes on our backs yesterday, I told Thien, "Forget the points, I need to catch something," and we scooted out on the rocks. No points but had some fun out there. Glad we were able to fish together for another quick session. Looking forward to another soon...assuming that you and Nate don't throw a wrench in the works!:LOL:

Thanks John! Lots of fun to be had out there over the long weekend. Just hope your teammates don't find a way to stop me from having some more fun out there! Dang guys tryin to Buddha-block me! Good luck in your ventures out there this month and we'll see you at the finish line...it is going to be a close one!

congratulations on that fat WSB and pig checker!!!

thanks for the report and pictures!

Alex.

Thanks Alex! That WSB was a fatty. Looks like those fish have been eating well. Just needs to stretch out some and give me another 10" or so. The checker was another porker. Took a little while to get a good look at her size cuz she was all wrapped up in salad...nice surprise once I got through the pile. Hope things are going well out there for you. Conditions have been pretty nice and with all the bait popping along the coast, you're turn is coming up soon!

Thanks Terry! Believe me, I know that full payment will be due soon for the hallpasses. I can already feel the heat on the back of my neck from the glares. The hallpasses are only gonna get harder to come by if my daughter doesn't keep quiet when I leave...guess she kinda went "salty" for a couple of hours after I left yesterday morning. I was kinda wondering if Nate was outside our window poking her with a stick to make her fuss so that my wife won't let me go anymore. Pretty funny what a little "friendly" competition will do to people.

Thanks Daniel! I've been getting pretty lucky out there. We'll see if I can keep getting hallpasses through the summer. Hope to see you out there sometime soon.

Dang Peter, seems like you've been MIA for a while. Kinda hard to fish when work gets in the way, eh? Hope you get some time out there soon and look for your success reports. You're second in command seems to be bearing quite a load in this month's competition. Thanks for the kind words and good luck out there!

Woooo Hoooo! Way to put up good numbers Don! I knew you would still be one of the main soldiers in this month's intense battle . I remember saying "there's no way Don isn't fishing this month, even if he just got another kid..." I am glad I was right. Now, we just need you to get out one last time and reinforce our standing

Arthur, I see that you single-handedly scored over half of your team's points. Ridiculous.

Thanks Thien! One more week to go. We need to find a way to stop Arthur from fishing this weekend and I think we may take this month's competition.:ROFL: Actually, if we put a tracker on him, I'll follow him around and throw screens...might have better luck than trying to scrounge points the way things have been going for me as of late.:Secret::Wink:
