So, I’ve had a recent addition to my family. With the recent birth of my daughter, I figured I’d seen the last of the surf for a while. Well, like attacking any new A.O., I took a step back, evaluated the terrain in front of me, and formulated a game plan.
First, get “honey-do” points to prime my wife for the BIG question...“Can I go fishing for a little while?” My plan was to get out for a quick morning session during the week so that I could even see if it was feasible to ask for hallpasses during the long weekend. I had work to do, so I stayed up till 1am to clear that path. Then I took diaper and feeding duties throughout the night to give her rest. The next morning I hit her with the question...and she said “sure”.:Dancing Banana: I told her that I’d feed my son breakfast and get him ready for school.
Day 1 - TESTING GROUND
I dropped my son off and headed to a local beach. I didn’t expect much but shortly after arriving to the A.O. I hook up, solid...or so I thought. I feel good weight on the end and I get the tell tale signs of headshakes. After a short battle, it comes unbuttoned.:Rolls Eyes: I’m figuring, “Oh well, I’m just REAL lucky to be out here at all.” So, I keep working down the beach. I get a couple perch bites but nothing is sticking. Right before I’m about to call it a day, I get another take. This time I DRIVE the hook home. Again, good weight, headshakes, even a little line pull from the reel. I’m thinking, “I got you this time you :Censored:” Well, Poseidon decided to slap some reality back into my melon and I pull the hook again. I head out and call my “buddy” Nate (BBQ Sushi). As I tell him about my losses (and expect a little sympathy), he says, “well, to be honest, I’m kinda glad you lost those fish...since we’re not on the same team anymore.” Wow, this dang monthly contest is getting SERIOUS! Okay, so this is how it’s gonna be eh? Well, that was only a small taste of what was to come.
I figure I’ve got a little system going here and I have to take some serious steps to see if my efforts to gain hallpasses is going to pan out to a working procedure. My wife’s relatives are coming to town from up north, so I figure I can use my wife’s Uncle Steve as further leverage to gain hallpasses. I tell her, “Well, it’s too bad I won't be able to take Uncle Steve fishing this time around” and she says, “Go ahead, just let him know ahead of time so he can bring his gear.”:Big Smile: So, I let him know the plan and think, “wow, I can really milk this.” I go on to tell her that I should probably do a trip on the morning of the 4th to scout out where to take him...and she agreed! When I tell the Commander about my plans, he informs me that he had talked to Nate earlier. They were both having a laugh and scheming on how to have my hallpasses revoked! Nate was gonna have his wife talk to mine and tell her how I’m fishing too much and that she should put her foot down. What the :Censored:?!!! You guys are SERIOUS about this competition aren’t you?!!! I immediately call Nate and he’s busting up, and says, “Well, we figured it was time to play dirty and stop you from pumping out any points.” Okay, well, extra motivation to gain hallpasses.
Day 2 - SCOUTING MISSION
So, I make plans to try and hit an “old faithful” A.O. at greylight. I had planned to wake up around 4am, but my daughter decides that 2:45 would be a great time for me and requires her changing/feeding a little earlier than planned. By the time she decides she’s ready to go back to sleep, I was wide awake and not going to get much more sleep, so I decide to head out early. I get to the A.O. and it’s still pitch black. Even though it’s dark, I can see huge clumps of kelp piled on the shore and after a few casts, I knew this was not going to be a great place to stay. At this point, I’m kinda glad my daughter got me here early cuz if I had arrived at my intended time, I woulda stuck it out knowing that my window to fish was too small to do much exploring.
I move to plan B and work the next A.O. for about an hour and a half with only a small YFC to show for it. There’s not a lot of time to do much else and figure maybe I should just head home. Well, on the way home I decide to check out just one more spot, if nothing else, to see if one of the guys was there and say “hello”. He wasn’t there, but the conditions looked kinda nice, so I figured, “What the heck? Might as well make a couple of casts while I’m here.” I get on the sand and, sure enough, on my fourth cast...HOOKUP!!! It feels decent but I’m figuring it’s probably just a nice YFC. When I get it close, I see the nice yellow tail, but wait...this guy has vertical bars!:EyePop: WSB!!! I get him on shore and know right away it isn’t legal, so with a quick pict, I send him on his way. Cool...5 points for my team!!! Next cast, BAM! I hook another. This one feels bigger, but I know it’s still probably another short. Right as I’m about to get him to the sand, he unbuttons.:Rolls Eyes: I work the area for another 15 minutes but figured I better get the heck outta Dodge and not push my luck with the Mrs.
I text Command and tell Arthur that his soldier didn’t do his job and that I made my escape from house arrest...and scored!:Dancing Banana: I leave a voicemail for Nate and receive the following text: “YOU :Censored:!!! Where did you score that?” Well, my response was immediate...“Dockweiler, uhhh yea that’s it. Dockweiler...that’s where I went. Lol!” “Honest...would I lie to you?”:Secret: Well, what else was I supposed to say...all’s fair in love and war, right?

So, later that night, I made the plans to hit the beach with Uncle Steve the next morning.
Day 3 - MORNING FULL OF ACTION
Based on some intel, I decided to head over to a different A.O. at greylight, because I wasn’t feeling great about the tide situation even if I had scored a ghost at the previous day’s beach. We get there, suit up and make our way onto the sand. Conditions were great and about 15 minutes into the session, Uncle Steve scores the first victim...and nice chunky YFC. Then another. Then another! We had been seeing nice spots of bait, but after the third hookup, the water starts erupting with fish boiling in front of him. We start hooking up like crazy, but it’s all YFC and perch. I hadn’t quite made it to the position with structure that I wanted to fish, but figured with all the commotion, maybe some calicos or flatties might join the fun. I lost count of all the YFC we got, but I added 4 bsp to the mix, one making a solid 13”, and finally I get a calico...all 6-7” of him. By far the smallest calico I’ve ever taken on an LC. I get another and it’s a little more respectable, but Uncle Steve gets the biggest of the morning which looks to be right around legal. The action fizzled out after about 20 minutes to a half hour and we make our way to the structure that I was sure would yield more checkers. Unfortunately we just manage a couple of more YFC. None of mine worth very size worthy, but a couple of Steve’s were pushing 17-18”...really nice fish.
Steve was on fire!!!

I was fully willing to let the rest of the weekend go without fishing. I figured, I’m satisfied with getting a couple of days out of this, but that was a dirty move by our opponents. I’m going out for more points if she’ll let me. Might as well as long as I have Uncle Steve to help pursuade my wife. So, that night, while having dinner with family, I ask Uncle Steve, “Wanna try a different A.O. in the morning?” His response was immediate, “Ohhh, don’t twist my arm!”
Day 4 - TIME TO PILE ON SOME POINTS!
We head out to our next A.O., again, at greylight. By this time, I’m a zombie. I had been taking the all of the nightly feeding/changing duties, and having festivities and family over the long weekend meant not going to sleep before midnight. *NOTE to fathers out there...you want hallpasses? Suck it up and sleep after the kids get a little (or a lot) older. You also might want to kick the wife out of the house every once in a while and send her shopping, to run errands or whatever she wants to go out and do. Just tell her that you'll take the kids..."don't worry about it, go have some time to yourself." This works WONDERS for gaining hallpass points...might hurt the wallet a little though.
Again we arrive at greylight and, 10 minutes into our session, I get HAMMERED! I can feel that this is a good fish and work it up to see the silhouette of a nice calico in the little light that we had. It tapes out at 19” and I’m figuring that this is going to be a great morning. We work down the beach without a scratch over the next 20 minutes but once we get to some structure, I get a pancake to start the ball rolling again. Three casts later, another pancake. Then the calicos show their hand and start blowing up in some nearby kelp.:EyePop: I make a cast into the danger zone and sure enough, pull out a decent checker, but know that one of the fish I saw boil up was a bigger model. I keep hitting the spot and end up with my 3rd short flattie. The action slows to a hault so we try to get out on some rocks nearby but the tide had started to come up too fast and I figured it’d be too dangerous to try to get out there. When we get back to the beach, I tell Steve to take the “A” position and sure enough he goes bendo HARD! He’s trying to get fish outta the danger zone but this big boy didn’t get that big by being stupid. It wraps him up in the structure and, after trying to work it out for a few minutes, the hooks pull for no glory. Unfortunately, that would be it for Steve’s action for the morning. For me, there was more to come. We start working back toward our point of origin and I manage pancake number 4. This session has already turned out to be one of my most productive. So, as we’re about to leave, I tell Steve that there’s one more spot of structure that I want to hit before we leave. Sure enough, I get SLAMMED and this time, I’m the one that gets humbled into the kelp. After some work, the hooks pull and this fish wins his freedom. A few casts later, HOOKUP! Pancake number 5 hits the beach. I keep casting to the spot and again, HOOKUP! This time as I’m getting the flattie to the sand it unbuttons in about two inches of water. I dive on him and get my hand around his tail, but he manages to give me the slip and wins his freedom. We keep at the spot and after slapping my LC on the water for the millionth time to get salad off the hooks, the line parts and the lure goes flying off.:Rolls Eyes: I’m figuring that Poseidon was ready for an offering since I had such an epic day, but while working the area over for the next 15 minutes, I see the lost LC come floating by! Wow, how freakin lucky can I be? Can't ask for much more than that from Poseidon. So, after that we decided that we had milked this hallpass for all it was worth and we had better head for the hills.
Here are the beauty shots for the session...

So, Uncle Steve had to leave early the next morning so I couldn’t use him again as an excuse to take another hallpass. My energy level was at a minimum so I wasn’t so sure I wanted one.:Embarrassed: But, after waking up for feeding/diaper duties at 4am, I was feeling like maybe I could squeeze out one more day of the surf. I took a chance and ran it by my wife but she had plans for us that morning so I thought I’d better not push my luck.:LOL: It was a great weekend, but I guess I had missed out on some residual fireworks that morning. That’s a story for someone else to tell...
The commander has a follow-up report that he will be adding to this for your viewing pleasure!
Hope you enjoyed the read.
