The monthly SWAT competition has been changed up for the month of July, and it is now Team Pacific Shores, with Robert (murietta angler) as team captain, vs. Team Reel Em In, with Peter (ptn) as captain. A couple of days ago, I received intel from Robert (murrieta angler) that the halis were biting on his home turf. It was an easy decision to make the trip, and it paid off as you can see on Thien's report :Big Grin: On Tuesday, I get a text from Jason asking if anyone wants to hit the surf the next day. I wasn't sure if I could make it out since my relatives were over, but I got the OK as long as I made it back in time for dinner. After some back and forth texting, it's decided that Jason (jaysuuun), Thien (bloox8), Ken (skunked4life), and I will be hitting the same spot and hopefully meeting up Robert too. Unfortunately, Robert was unable to make it. At the end of the day, we ended up with less legals, but overall, it was still a productive day of fishing and a great time
Fish Count
Me: (3) short halibut, (1) legal 26" halibut
Jason: (2) short halibut, (1) sngf, (1) perch
Thien: (2) short halibut, (1) perch
Ken: (1) yfc
We met at the location around 5am and were geared up and on the sand by 5:30am. It was overcast throughout the day with 1-3ft swells and minimal salad. Fishing started off hot, with most of our fish being caught in the first two hours and then the bite slowed down. About 30minutes in, Jason gets one of the worst bird's nests I've ever seen. He was testing out braid and had just spooled up his reel with new powerpro. He was using a leader and line to line knot going through the guides seemed to have caused the backlash. All four of us usually bring some sort of backup setup or extra line at the very least, but unfortunately, today we were all unprepared... Eventually, Jason was able to fix the problem by cutting out most of his line and get back to fishing, and he still managed a nice fish count :Big Grin:
Ken had to be at work so he left around 8am. The three of us continued fishing, but as the bite slowed and we started to get hungry, we decided to take a break to go eat. On our way out, we decided to make the obligatory last casts, and I get a nice hit about 15ft out that feels much heavier than the shorts I caught earlier. I bring it in and its a nice 26" legal! Some more points for Team Teel Em In :Dancing Banana: I ended up giving this fish to Jason. Consider it your wedding gift, bro  After that, we went to grab a bite and headed back to try out a different spot. Thien farmed a short hali there before we decided to call it quits for the day.

Cool looking fish I found washed up on the shore. I think it's a pipefish.
