SUNDAY
So with all the swells we had last week, I was itchin’ to get some time out in the surf. I contacted Arthur (Wingnut) and told him about my intended destination...which seemed like it was gonna take a minimal amount of swells compared to what we’d been seeing. I was gonna be bringing Nate (bbqsushi) and Arthur was gonna meet up with Dan (SP Dan), Peter (ptn) and Danny (onekrzyboi).
Nate and I arrived a little late, with Arthur, Peter and Danny already hitting the spot. Dan had hiked around the corner a bit to go seek a less crowded stretch. Before we could even get our session going, the early birds had their fish count building. Bait was abundant and there was YFC roaming the breakers. Arthur managed a nice chunky checker through all the croaks. I started with a small YFC but as the sky got a little brighter, told Nate it was time to hit the rocks. It didn’t start fast and furious but after a few casts, I tie into my first calico of the morning. As I reach for my camera, I find out that it’s dead and I can’t get the dang thing to power up. Fortunately, I travel with my own personal photographer...Nate :Wink: and he took my glory shots. I cast back out and, before he even gets to wet his line again, tie into checker #2. We get him CPR’d and start into again but don’t land another fish for a short spell. There were still fish around cuz I could see followers and miss a couple hits.
Nate walks out a bit further and he finally manages his first victim. While he’s CPR’ing his fish. I keep flinging my LC. As I watch my LC come up to the rocks I’m standing on, and I could see it fluttering in the backwash a few feet in front of me. Then, I see a BIG brown spot come up.:EyePop: A nice checker had come up from the rocks below me did a quick turn on the LC and started back down. My eyes bulge out and it looks like he never commited to my offering. I leave the LC there, thinking he had missed, when suddenly my rod doubles over and I realize he had inhaled the LC. He powers to my left and I’m just pulling hard to keep him from going back into the rocks. A couple swells and lifts and I get him onto the rocks. My LC PB checker at 20”.:Big Grin: Nate comes over and does his photographer duties and we release it for another day. I manage one more checker and a couple of smelt a short time later. Nate had been working a boiler over without a take and moved on. I decided to give it a try and on my third cast to it...BAM! Fish on. This thing is pulling hard and manages to get back to his rock. I slack up a bit and manage to get him out. I could tell it was a nicer model and as I get him to the rocks we were standing on, he manages to dive down again and hang me up. I slack up and feel the line has wrapped around a rock. I work left and right to try and free it but it doesn’t come out. As I slack up the line, I see the fish come up to the surface in a swell. It looks to be another 19-20” checker, but after another 15 minutes of work, it finally breaks off.:Rolls Eyes: Lost LC number 10 for the year, but at least I lost this one to a fish and I got to see him first. No points for me or Nate since these were “rockfish” but it was a great day out with the guys!
Here are the photos for the day...
Checker no. 1 (Look, I can do this with my eyes closed!)

Me pulling on the 'one that got away'. "I'm giving her all she has sir, but we've lost our rear deflector shields!"

The boys managed to get some points with some pancakes and surf checkers, but I’m not certain of the final numbers.
Arthur, Peter, and Dan....great fishing with you guys again. Danny nice to finally meet you. Hope we can all do it again soon.
Nate...thanks for being my wingman and photographer out there. Be careful, you might just catch up to me in the lost LC count at the pace your going!
MONDAY
So, I have work to do at home, but decide to check out a local haunt since there was a projected grunion run.
I get to the beach with VERY limited time to fish and, because I have to drop my son off at school, don’t hit the sand till after 9:30. After a few casts, I manage a nice 12” YFC skunkbuster. Since I’m on a tight schedule I only manage a few photos with my phone of the ones that could get some points on the board in our monthly contest.
http://i1175.photobucket.com/albums/r627/bachidym/YFC1_zps332a1074.jpg (http://s1175.photobucket.com/user/bachidym/media/YFC1_zps332a1074.jpg.html)
A few casts later, I tie into a nice 12” bsp. Looking at how fat these fish were, I could guess that grunion were on the menu throughout the night. My third hookup finally yields a point for my first pancake of the morning.

My second lil’ pancake decides to cough up some of his dinner from the night before. Looks like he had fillet of grunion for his meal.

The very next cast, I employ “Colonel Croaker” techniques. I get a nice “professional overrun” and it takes a bit to get it out. As I take up the slack, I realize that there’s a fish waiting for me on the other end and I land my third pancake of the morning. Yep, I meant to do that.:Embarrassed:

I start catching some fairly nice YFC and finally get one that makes the grade at 16”.

Final count for the morning was 3 pancakes, 5 YFC (11-16”) and 2 bsp (12-13”). Not a bad session for an hour and a half...and 5 more points for the Old-timers!:Dancing Banana:
Nate and I went back to that beach for the grunion run and they made a nice showing but we never managed to stick any fish.
Hope you enjoyed the read.
