I have heard that while fishing from a float tube in the ocean and bays, a landing net is required by the CA DFG. Is this true? I wonder why? Boats too? I have fished many times in small boats and never had a net. Even been checked by wardens for a license. Never been hassled about not having a net...

YES its there....
It is to keep anglers from gaffing or otherwise harming undersized or protected fish...
I have been checked in the bay and had a lip gripper.. They let me slide. As it is an alternative, yet not statute specific..

Yep Nessie is right about this one.....you must have a landing net if you plan on tubing the salt!!!!!! I carry a lip gripper with me along with a net. I use the lip gripper rather than the net.....it is easier on the fish especially halis....
You might consider getting both a net and lip gripper!!
