Headed out to the ao to fish the run tonight arrived about an hour before the run was thought to start. The conditions were perfect full moon lots of light no wind and calm water. Fished until almost one am with no run and not even a nibble. On my last cast my line snapped and i threw twenty bucks of lc in the ocean grrrrrr.so pissed,u don't mind giving a worthy fish some new jewelery but this kills me.

Oh well i guess, :Skunk:

What line do you guys recommend? i keep having casting issues throwing the lc and i know its not my reel

Bummer dude!

I'll be head'n out somewhere down south of you 2morrow after the Kings game. If you wanna go let me know.
As for lines, I've got 15# braid on my spin'n reel. Sorry for your lose. Another LC lost @ sea!

According to my tide book the run starts tonight. The little tide books with the grunion run predictions is what I have always used. It is 2 days off from the DFG site predictions.
Most use the DFG site. I've always used the tide book predictions (since the 1970's) and they have always showed.

I haven't seen the grunions run in the last two nights. DR is right. The last grunion run before this came 2 days after what the DFG site said.. Some times the grunions decide to run early too. They are random.

As for line, I would go with 20lb braid or higher depending on what reel you are using. Braid is super sensitive and has no stretch. Only problem is it has no abrasion resistance. Maybe try 20lb+ FC or mono since those have abrasion resistance but mono tends to stretch a bit. Fluorocarbon doesn't stretch as much but I still prefer braid for the sensitivity and the diameter size.

I think your right DR, I hit a south OC beach from 10pm-11:30pm & didn't see any Grunion(but a did catch my 1st Corbina). So does your tide book show Sunday be'n the 1st nite of a 4 nite run?
Thanks, Homefish

So does your tide book show Sunday be'n the 1st nite of a 4 nite run?

You can get these little 2" x 3" tide books at most tackle shops and surf shops.
It also says that the 2nd and 3rd nights are the best.

None seen at Redondo/RAT last night. Plenty of surf and salad on every cast however!

I was using Ande since I had bulk spools of it in different line classes for boat fishing. I mostly throw the 12lb., but one thing I noticed was it kinked pretty bad when I backlashed. That cost me a few LCs. I recently switched over to Maxima. It's a lot more expensive, but it doesn't seem to have the same problems with the "kinks", and I've straightened/broken hooks without the line breaking when pulling snags out of rocks. The price of the Maxima is a lot less than the multiple LCs I've lost. I never had problems with Ande before so it may just be a thing where the line is a little old. I've also used P-line CXXX in 12lb. No problems with it but it seems to have a thicker diameter than the other two...might just be perceived cuz I haven't actually looked it up. Either way...my 2¢. Hope it helps.

If it makes you feel better, I lost 16 LC's last year, a lot to testing different line/braids and topshots. I'm already up to 8 this year but that's mainly to rocks. One of the hazards of fishing near structure.

This last Grunion was pretty weak from what I've heard...
Keep trying and you'll bound to have a good session.
