Can anybody help with info on making squid bait? My buddy just bought a boat and we're wondering how, where, what times are best to catch squid for bait to catch WSB, YT and other quality fish!

Any info is greatly appreciated...

Pickup the last 2 books written by Brandon Hayward to get some good insight into making squid night or day. He shares that the amount of squid up and down the So Cal coast is amazing. Both books share how to make squid by snagging or by netting with lights at night. Besides the info on squid the books have tons of info for all private boaters. Brandon used to be a writer for Western outdoor news but recently left to run his private guide business. FYI.... Just speaking with him last week and he had just returned from making squid out of Dana Point harbor.
Tight Lines and God Bless.

That sucks that Brandon left WON. Check out some youtube vids on squid too. What kind of boat did your buddy get ? All 12 volt or does he have a 120 v generator ? Your going to need lights and a dip net. A friend of mine got some submersible 4' squid lights, one red one green. I really don't think they are all that great the couple times we used them. A couple white flood lights will work.

12 volt power consumption can be a problem. Some guys are working on LED squid lights. All depends on how much light you have. More light is better.

Squid boat guys use High Pressure Sodium 400 watt parking lot style 120 volt. Davis lighting on Venice blvd sells used big lights to squid guys.

There is the Vees at Catalina. Backside at the east end that is a common squid grounds. Sometimes you can tailgate off the commercial guys. The commercial guys aren't allowed on weekends to net squid and they have a season too.

Check this Ghetto rig out below ? I've checked out some wiring on squid boats and am surprised more guys aren't electrocuted 120/220 volt, with all the shotty hack wire jobs these guys do.

Thanks DockRat... He bought a 20ft bayrunner! Center console w bait tank, electronics, etc. Sweet little paddy hopper and maybe coronados on a calmer day! I've been reading about how good squid can be for WSB and YT and we really wanna give them a try!!!

Dude, that one boat looks like a safety violation for sure! Lol

Probably looking at some grounds closer to Dago because thats where he lives and most of our fishing takes place...

Dual batteries ? Try some 12v - 2' fluorescent auto repair lights ? Harbor Freight ?
Battery consumption will be you main issue.

Most guys have a basketball size net with a finer mesh than a normal fishing net.
Needs to be smaller for quick dipping/catching when they swim by. Usually you will be catching one at a time unless your in a thick school. You can also use squid jigs.

if your in the right place, you can use a couple of handheld spotlights (get as many candle power as you can) and a dip net or a couple squid jigs, making it can be easy or really slow depending on if they're around, often it will be cheaper on gas to just get a single scoop from the bait receiver if they got em (newport did a few days ago, cost $20 for a cooler sized bait tank's worth and was well over 50 pieces, still got some in the freezer)

but yea, everything loves eating squid :Secret: its that fish candy, they cant resist
