Mark your Calendars: Hunting Giants 5 Surf Fishing Event - Saturday, September 28th, 2013.

Saturday 4/27 - I had a couple of hours before work and decided to hit the surf at grey light. 4:30am, and I was driving solo to a pre-designated A.O. when I decided to make a detour to crash Don (Bachiboy) and Dan’s (SP Dan) party. One of the rare times that I don't stick with my first instinct and made changes on the fly to a pre-planned assault. Lucky for me, it worked out pretty well… To see Saturday’s results, check out Don’s report. Complete with blood and gore, ouch!

Anyways, the Calico Bass bite was so good that we decided to head back to the same A.O. Sunday morning. Again, Don’s report captured the action for both Saturday and Sunday mornings…

Here are some extra pics from my Saturday & Sunday morning sessions with Don and Dan.

Don and Dan, I had a great time fishing with you two on consecutive grey light sessions. Don, that was quite a nice Checker-fest we had for a while there Saturday morning. Too bad Sunday’s bite wasn’t as strong, but overall, it was a pretty darn good weekend of fishing. :Big Grin:
Dan, good to have you back from your month long European vacation. You were a Halibut magnet on Sunday with three flatties. I hope you keep the momentum going for next month’s competition between the Veterans & Rookies.

************************************************** ******************************

Sunday Night’s Session.
On the drive home after Sunday morning session, I get a text from Peter (PTN), debriefing me on his session from the night before.
As the intel was streaming in, several words caught my attention… Grunion run, hot bite, multiple legal Flatties… I uttered a voice command on the Bluetooth and was on the phone with Peter before you could say “Holy Halibut Batman!” :Envious:

Peter took a chance and hit a beach last night and ran into a full-on Grunion run. He and some friends landed multiple legal Halibut. I thought to myself, “Man, this kid is on fire!” Peter reminded me a lot of myself when I first started surf fishing a few years ago. Fearless, motivated, thirsty for knowledge and relentless in my pursuit of the prey. :Big Grin:

Peter asked me if I wanted to join him for an encore mission to the same A.O. again tonight. Initially, I told Peter that I had too many things to do for the rest of my Sunday before I had to fly out Monday morning. Then, I thought to myself… I’ve been surf fishing for about 5-6 years and have never fished for Halibut at night during a Grunion run. This would be a great opportunity for me to put this experience under my belt. So I took care of whatever I needed to do and told Peter that I will meet him at the A.O. later that night.

I met up with Peter and Danny (onekrzyboi) around 10:30pm, geared up and took a short walk to the beach. Peter filling me in on what to expect… Since, this was my first time Halibut hunting at night, I was pretty excited and anxious to engage the enemy on a battlefield that’s totally foreign to me.

We hit the sand about 11:00pm and started fan casting blindly while slowly moving along the beach. The anticipation of the Grunion showing up was on our minds. We weren’t the only ones, the shoreline was full of Birds of Prey all waiting patiently for the Grunions arrival. Egrets, Cormorants, Kingfisher, Seagulls standing side by side with their eyes focused on the surf line. Mother Nature is so fascinating, it was quite a sight…

For the first half an hour or so, we didn’t see much movement in the surf at all. Peter said that he was hungry and backed out of the surf. He left to grab something to eat while Danny and I fished on. About 15 minutes later, I start noticing bait fish dimpling and flipping on the surface. First, only a few here and there and then in greater frequency… all of the sudden… a Halibut goes flying out of the surf no farther than 20 feet in front of us. :EyePop: This fish went completely airborne and looked like a legal as Grunions scattered in every directions. Danny and I started casting frantically in that direction… the same Halibut, or a different one goes airborne again! After about 4-5 casts, my LC was making its way back to me, scaring Grunions as they were flipping around the path of the LC, it gets hammered… fish on! Headshakes, definitely a Halibut. A short while later, I beached my first nocturnal legal Halibut from my first ever Grunion run. :Dancing Banana:

After a few pics, I buried the fish under some kelp and went back in action.
Peter comes walking up after getting some grub and rejoins the assault. By this time, there was a heavy presence of the bait fish as I can feel them bumping into the LC on the retrieves… I snagged a few of them in the process. We kept on seeing Halibut and what I think was Calico or Sand Bass going vertical after fleeing Grunions. My heart was pumping as we ran to cast on a spot where a fish just breached the surface and hooking up. I even caught a little Perch right in the middle of the melee, lol

We heard a huge splash in the distance and I said to Peter, that sounded kinda far, can you reach it? Peter flings the LC as hard as he can and it disappears into the darkness… On that same retrieve he goes bendo! Nice fish, taking drag and some steady runs. We were all hoping that it was a Flat Fish of the “right”, because there were lots of big Shovelnose cruising the surf and bumping into our legs. I stepped on a big one that squirmed violently and almost took my feet out from under me.

Peter got it in the skinny water and in the darkness, I could see a faint outline of a nice size Halibut. He got himself ANOTHER legal surf Halibut! I can’t seem to catch this kid!

After some pics and high fives we continued with the assault while massive amount of Grunions were swarming around our feet and beaching themselves with reckless abandonment. I shine my flashlight down the beach and the sand was glimmering with thousands of squirming spawners. Birds of Prey were having a field day gorging on the all you can eat Poseidon food fest.

The Grunions doing their thing…

I like your attitude Danny.

The most frustrating thing that we experienced (over and over) all night, was you would see fish going airborne and being so aggressive chasing bait fish, but most of the time they ignore your lure (or don't see your lure). :Crying: I mean we did catch a few, but I swear we could have put a dozen legals on the beach if they would have cooperated, lol.

I have two theories, first, they were so keyed in on the Grunions that they practically ignored anything else that don't look and smell exactly like what they were feeding on. Second, it was pitch dark and it was just a massive feeding frenzy and they are really biting at anything and everything. By chance, your lure would have to cross right in front of their face during the chaos for them to hit it. In any case, the fast and furious action lasted for about an hour and then dissipated. After the mayhem, I was surprised that we only landed some shorts and a couple of legals. The count could have been much better... :Envious:

My last fish, a short.

We wrapped things up about 1:30am and walked back to the cars. Chatted for a while and reflected on a great night session. Said our goodbyes and I was on the road on the long drive home, drove in my gates around 3:30am. By the time I rinsed off, cleaned and stored my gear, filleted the fish and took a shower, I had just enough time to pack, check my emails, gave the Iron Chef a goodbye kiss while she was sound asleep… and made it to the airport for my early morning flight.

Peter, thank you for the invitation to join you for a surf session I won’t soon forget. I appreciate your willingness to share your experience with me and all of our S.W.A.T. Brothers & Sisters. That’s what it’s all about … sharing special moments with your Family and Friends. :Group Hug: Keep up the fantastic job, you are certainly having one heck of a year so far and it’s only April. I have to figure out how in the world am I going to catch two legal Halibut for every one that you catch, just to catch up.

Danny, it was great fishing with you again. I’m sorry that Peter and I kept stealing your fish all night, lol  I can’t figure it out, we were catching fish on both sides of you and somehow, they manage to elude your lure. All I have to say is that Poseidon has very special plans for you when he decides to reward you for all your patience and hard work out there. Be prepared, that day is coming… Think about my proposal and I hope it will motivate you even more to accomplish your goals.

Have a pleasant week everybody!

Arthur, I'm glad you decided to come out and fish with Danny and I. It is always a pleasure to fish with you and Danny. I had a great time and you are a machine.. I would expect after your earlier fishing expeditions, you would slow down on how hard you fish, but you kept your pace. There was laughing and smiles all around and you almost got me when you tossed your short hali next to me and made me think the hali jumped right next to me.. Those are some great pictures and that water where you guys were catching the calicos looks dangerous! Thanks for the great time and you weren't going to take me to school this time..

Commander, so let me get this straight: you went and slayed it Saturday and Sunday morning, went home to do your "hubby" chores, then went back out that night about 90 miles in the opposite direction and slayed it in the dark? This is one of those stories you tell in a couple of years from now...it starts like this: "When I was your age..." Seriously, you are DA MAN!!!! NExt time, hold the butt closer to the camera and insist on a different angle so that Peter's fish is dwarfed by yours.

Peter, I love ya brother, but I am going to start fishing even harder and wipe that grin off of your face... Just Kidding bro, we are just going to start calling you Junior (Arthur Jr.).

Danny, time to go solo. Nah, the great thing about it is that you can't beat the company you were with! Keep at it. I feel your pain, but it will get better. Besides, your buddy is one of the hottest young fisherman out there right now.

Trophy, I know that you cannot understand me seeing that you are mostly glass, but I can see right through you. YOU WILL BE GOING HOME WITH ME VERY SOON...

Prius, I don't know what to say to you because you are a car, but maybe this is a sign for your owner to slow down the fishing. Keep him at home so that we younglings have a fighting chance come May. Get well soon.

Jaysuun and Tess, Not only are the people in the pictures beautiful, the theme is outrageously awesome! My wife saw the pictures and took away the iPad from me to look at them again. Trust me though bro, she wasn't looking at you in the pictures.

Romeo, woof woof grrr....sniff sniff :Dog Piss:

Hi Arthur,
Did you find any fish in your waders from getting that deep in the water? :BabbleFish:
That picture of Dan is so funny, like he got squirted by a squid.
Wow, I'm jealous now, how did all those grunions show up. :Envious:
I went to Torrance Beach Saturday night to check out the grunions from 12:00 to 01:00 but only saw like 7 the most at one moment. Haha..
Nice catches to you and Peter, it seems fun fishing in the dark and all that activity around.
Can't wait to see the challenge.
Thanks for the great report and pictures.

Hi ya Commander,

First of all .... I really enjoyed hooking up with you and Don "twice" on this past weekend, thank you for the great times guys! .... I also look forward to hooking up and spending time with all the rest of my Brother, Sisters and friends in the salt this 2013 season! I'll be checking my PM's .... so don't be shy! Hint hint! :EyePop::???::Rolls Eyes: Who will be the first to step up and invite an Ol' Fogie like me to share the sand with them?!!

Razz starts:  Why just that morning .... while we were hiking down the trail in the dark to our AO .... Arthur, you had mentioned to Don and myself .... that you were not in a hurry to start fishing in the dark BUT WISHED TO WAIT FOR THE GRAY LITE before starting to fish! You said that you didn't particularly care to fish in the dark because you couldn't see what you were doing.
What a 180 deg turn around in the same day Sir .... which made this such a fun read for me! I'm glad that you had such a great session with Peter and Dan! It's a little funny how we either like or dislike something before we ever give it a chance .... or at least .... try it out first. Hmmm! :Big Grin: There must be one of your famous "Spiritual Growth" quotes that would fit this scenario perfectly Sir! Ha ha ha!

So a little bit of moon light mixed with a Grunion run and some quality time spent with a couple of angling friends in the surf ...... rewarding and priceless! :Thumbs Up:

Arthur my Brother ......"CONGRATULATIONS" on beaching your first nocturnal legal Halibut from your first ever Grunion run session Sir! :Big Smile::Applause:

Peter ...... another beautiful "LEGAL" Hali brother! You will be difficult to beat on the SWAT leader board! Butt all things are possible .... RIGHT Peter?!
Dan ........ you were there, you had a great time with our brothers, your memories of this night must be priceless Sir!

Thank you my nocturnal Brother "Arthur" for another fun read with pic's Sir!

Looks like a great time in the dark.
You and Peter are tearing it up in the surf, is this the year that you don't take the "Most Legal Halibut" from the surf?!
I know it's all fun and games and the competition is just an added kicker.
I wish I could have gotten out this weekend but I had other things planned.
I will, however, be in the surf this morning after a meeting at my job site.
I agree with you about Danny, he does alot of laughing and keeps the spirits up..
Maybe I will see some of you in the surf this coming week.

DUDE!!! Your an animal. I was so tired Sunday night I probably woulda fell asleep standing in the water...continuing to fish mind you. Great job getting those flatties guys! Peter, guess you didn't give it all away in your reply to my post. I thought he scored at the morning A.O. You "youngin's" seemed to have found a new way to target the enemy...way to go!:Thumbs Up: Those jumpers must have had the adrenaline pumping. One thing to think about Arthur...jailbirds supposedly are more active at night. Maybe target an A.O. that they been sighted during a grunion run? Might get that missing "link" to your new species list.

Congrats on the awesome session guys and sorry about the car problems Arthur!

Another awesome outing. Well done guys. I have been that situation with halibut taking flight all around chasing bait fish yet unwilling to take my lure.. The situation made me extremely frustrated and the first time it happened to me I had a wide variety of lures and I think I threw everything I had them for nothing. Not even a bump. Then something amazing happened I was about to give up when I tied on LC 78 pointer Aura Blk (a 100 size would have been even better) I threw it out and fishing like jerk bait (twitch, twitch, pause, no more like sweep, sweep, wait for it, sweep, sweep, wait....). I was on immediately I went from and I went from nothing to getting bit (getting a halibut) on just about every cast and since then the times I have found myself in that same situation with the halibut going crazy I have applied the same technique and have been rewarded with the most phenomenal halibut fishing I have ever experienced/ witnessed.

Also want to say congratulations to Jason and Tess... Pictures were awesome..

This was definitely a fun night. First time I have ever been to and seen a grunion run. Nice to see that the fish were biting Arthur and Peter :Envious:
It seems that wherever I go, those butts seem to elude me quite well. I'm sure Poseidon has plans for me in the future, and until then, I just gotta keep fishing right? :Big Grin:
Anyhow, any time I can get out on the water is already a good time, and with great company, it makes the stunk a little less stinky to see buddies landing some nice sized fish.
I appreciate that you guys waited for me, to finally catch one, but it just wasn't meant to be that night. It was already getting pretty, and these guys still stuck it out!

@Peter As always it's a pleasure to fish with you. I hope when that day comes that Poseidon decides to bless me, that you are there! Heck you're pretty much there 80%+ of the time anyways!

@Arthur It was great fishing with you again. Always cracking some kind of joke or saying that never ceases to make me laugh, yet is always appropriate for the situation at hand  I have been thinking about your proposal and that has definitely already been having an effect on fishing harder and longer! One of these days, the hard work and patience will pay off and you already know how happy I'll be when that day comes. Here come some solo missions! :Big Grin:

@Ken Solo missions are great, but as you stated, great company sure does beat them! Of course, if I'm not catching anything, it's always great to see a companion catching a fish, because it always raises up spirits and makes you fish that much harder to land one of your own.

-Peter

I think you need a bigger cutting board
I'm glad that I made the decision to come Peter, it was well worth the lack of sleep, lol
You should have seen me in my Monday morning staff meeting... I was like the Walking Dead.
As for Sunday night, or Monday morning session, we'll call it a tie between the Veteran & the Rookie. You caught the bigger fish, but I had the higher fish count.
But if you add Danny in the equation, I WIN!
Thanks again for the invite and for the "trade up."

Ken
Ken, I'm lucky that the Iron Chef is very understanding and don't mind that I do whatever I love to do... even when I over do it.
But this weekend is the trade off, this weekend is "honey-do" weekend... you know, "honey do this, honey do that..." lol
That means shopping, gardening and yoga classes... yay. :Rolls Eyes:
That's okay though, I'll give the Rookies and Young Guns a head start in the competition. Plus, my fellow Veterans will have my back.
Take care Ken, and I hope you get that "induction" fish soon. :Big Grin:

:ROFL:HAHAHA, this one really got me cracking up.
Good one, lol Let's see who will have the last laugh at the end of the month. :Envious:

Hi Arthur,
Did you find any fish in your waders from getting that deep in the water? :BabbleFish:
That picture of Dan is so funny, like he got squirted by a squid.
Wow, I'm jealous now, how did all those grunions show up. :Envious:
I went to Torrance Beach Saturday night to check out the grunions from 12:00 to 01:00 but only saw like 7 the most at one moment. Haha..
Nice catches to you and Peter, it seems fun fishing in the dark and all that activity around.
Can't wait to see the challenge.
Thanks for the great report and pictures.
ALbert (jinbow)
I pulled a legal Halibut out of my waders Albert. :Big Smile:
As for the Grunions, check your PM.

SP Dan <"))><
I still don't like to fish in the dark Dan... that will never change. I just made a special exception for the Grunion run.
You can continue to hit the surf for half an hour before grey light, I will still show up when I can see. I hope your fish count reflect your early start.
Ask yourself, how many of your notable catches has been in pitch dark conditions? Most, if not all of mine were in the grey light and in the hour after. But to each his own...
I really enjoyed hitting the surf with you and Don Saturday and Sunday morning, good times. :Big Grin:
Welcome back and I'm glad you and Rhonda had a spectacular vacation.

Old fogie checking in.

What a weekend Arthur you guys had. Its a good thing your boss lets you sleep at work.. Nice session catching at night, would loved to have at least seen the action on the beach.

Thanks guys for posting a prelude to the summer .

I agree Bill, I would have just went to see the Grunion run and all the spectacle surrounding it... the catching was just a bonus. :Big Grin:

Looks like a great time in the dark.
You and Peter are tearing it up in the surf, is this the year that you don't take the "Most Legal Halibut" from the surf?!
I know it's all fun and games and the competition is just an added kicker.
I wish I could have gotten out this weekend but I had other things planned.
I will, however, be in the surf this morning after a meeting at my job site.
I agree with you about Danny, he does alot of laughing and keeps the spirits up..
Maybe I will see some of you in the surf this coming week.
Take Care, God Blass & Have A Great Week,
Robert
<><
I told Peter he better rack up as many legals as he can... because it's easier to take the lead, than to remain in the lead.
So far this year, the Rookies & Young Guns have both the Biggest and the Most Halibut honors. :Envious:
The Veterans are gonna have to do something about that soon...

I was dead tired too Don, but I couldn't pass up a new experience. Trust me, I did plenty of napping the next day at the office... I''m glad that the "Boss" didn't catch me snoozing... I think he was a little sleep too, lol
As for the Stripers, JerryG and i was just discussing that possibility. One of these days, I'm gonna get me one of those Phantoms of the surf.
