View Full Version : S.W.A.T. game of chess turns into checkers

So I get a text from my fellow S.W.A.T. ‘old timer’, SP Dan, on Friday that he’s in need of a surf fix since he’s been away on vacation. We pick an A.O. that conditions showed promise and make our plans to meet at graylight the next morning. Arthur texts that he had heard of our intentions, but never says that he’s going to join us. Well, sure enough, as I’m gearing up, a car speeds by and yells “POACHERS!!!” out his window at me...Arthur. He pulls up and tells me that the “youngin’s” had made a run on this A.O. Friday morning and walked out pretty much empty handed. Well, we gave them first move in our "warmup" chess match. Guess that just means more for us ‘old guys’ to catch, right? Dan pulls in shortly after and we make our way to the surf.

We make our way down the beach with full intentions on showing the ‘young guns’ how to get er done, but just like them, don’t get any glory...although the conditions looked incredible. Arthur says that he wants to take some casts at some boilers near some adjacent rocks and Dan decides to head the opposite direction and work the beach. I decide to go with Arthur and see if we can coax up a bass to come out and play.

As we get out to the spot, we get into action right out of the gate. My second cast gets hammered right as I’m about to lift my LC out of the water. With the clear water, I got to watch the thing dart out from the rocks I was standing on and slam the thing.

Checker No.1 in the books...kinda. (Notice the LC hanging out the mouth of the fish)

http://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r135/Wingnut32566/Wingnut%2012/SWAT1001-17.jpg ([/url)

So, we’re like two kids getting all excited that we caught a fish.:Dancing Banana: Arthur wants to get some pictures and I hold up the fish...without taking out the hooks first. BIG MISTAKE!!!:Rolls Eyes::Embarrassed: The fish starts flopping and, sure enough, two of the three trebles drive into two of my fingers. The fish is flopping around with my hand attached and we manage to get him unhooked, but I’m still stuck...down past the barbs. We’re looking at my hand and Arthur is just saying, “aww man, that’s bad”. I look at him and just say, “yank ‘em.” The hooks went straight in, so cutting them and pushing them through wasn’t an option. ONE, TWO, THREE! Out comes hook no. 1. Arthur’s worried about the free hooks driving back into my hand as we pull the second hook out, but I tell him to just pull straight back and we should be fine...DUMB*&^!:Slap: I hold the finger steady with my other hand, Arthur pulls and, sure enough, just like he said...BAM!, hook no. 3 goes into the index finger of my other hand.:Idiot: Dr. Wingnut goes for hook number three and we finally get the damned lure free of fish and fingers.:No Pity:

http://i143.photobucket.com/albums/r135/Wingnut32566/Wingnut%2012/SWAT1002-19.jpg ([/url)

It’s bleeding out, so I squeeze the heck out of it to try and clean out the wounds, then wash it off in one of the tide pools. Arthur’s looking at me, asking if I’m okay and apologizing...heck, it wasn’t his fault. I take ALL the blame for that one...or three. I look up and him as I’m squeezing the wounds to stop the bleeding and tell him, “don’t worry about me, go fish! It’s all good” Hell, the fish were biting. We needed to get ‘em while we could. Sure enough the best shoreline bass bite I’ve ever had ensued. Our LCs were getting followed, knocked and hammered left and right.:Death2Above:

We had about an hour before the bite died, but when the smoke cleared, Arthur chalked up 7 checkers topped by big fish of the day, a 19”er. I had 6 checkers and my LC new species johnny bass. We both missed a number of other strikes and hook-ups, but walked out of there with PB checker counts for one session.

Dan had missed out on the game of checkers but nailed a 43” wiggles for his efforts. We walked out of there in awe of what happened. Fishing was so good, I couldn’t even feel pain in my hands. When I got home and was doing the first aid thing, I actually had to feel around on my fingers cuz I couldn't remember where the third hook had gone in...so how bad could it have been, right? Well, when I did the dishes (my husbandly duties for going fishing) the hot water took care of the lack of pain.:Explode::ROFL:

Here are some the glory shots of the day...

New LC species for me...johnny bass

http://i1175.photobucket.com/albums/r627/bachidym/johnnybass_zps490e5f18.jpg (http://s1175.photobucket.com/user/bachidym/media/johnnybass_zps490e5f18.jpg.html)

Casualty of the battles. Fallen soldier #3 for the year for me.

http://i1175.photobucket.com/albums/r627/bachidym/brokenLC_zpsa7ff9525.jpg (http://s1175.photobucket.com/user/bachidym/media/brokenLC_zpsa7ff9525.jpg.html)

We made plans to come back and make another run on the checkers Sunday. We get down to the A.O. and same drill, work the beach, then get out to the spot on the rocks when there was enough light to safely make it out there.

As we work our way down, Dan draws first blood for the day. A 16” pancake.

http://i1175.photobucket.com/albums/r627/bachidym/DanPancake1_zpse202334f.jpg (http://s1175.photobucket.com/user/bachidym/media/DanPancake1_zpse202334f.jpg.html)

Dan and I get out to the spot, while Arthur stops short to work another area. We start our assault with high expectations, but as luck would have it. No takers. We look back where Arthur is and he ties into a sand bass to start his day. He hooks up again shortly after but pulls the hooks on what appeared to be a nice calico. Dan works his way around to another spot and Arthur and I carpet bomb the area that had produced so well the day before.

Arthur draws first blood and nails a nice chunk.

http://i1175.photobucket.com/albums/r627/bachidym/ArtDay2_zpsc7cb37ac.jpg (http://s1175.photobucket.com/user/bachidym/media/ArtDay2_zpsc7cb37ac.jpg.html)

I follow up with my skunkbuster (no pict). We pack it in and decide to go back to working the sand. On the way back, we notice Dan ties into another pancake...18”. We work the entire stretch of beach and Dan nails a “near” legal at 21 1/2”. Dan and I hike on out, but Arthur hangs out a little longer to try a little longer. Hmmm...another Jedi mind trick by the commander to have us vacate the area? :Secret::ROFL::Rolls Eyes::Wink:

Final tally for this day (or is it?)

Arthur: 2 calicos, 1 turd roller
Don: 1 calico
Dan: 3 pancakes (16, 18 and 21 1/2”)

Dan, great to have you back and awesome, as always, to fish with you again. We didn't get white-washed Sunday morning but we all took on some serious water eh? And on a fairly calm day too. Congrats on your pancake breakfast! You deserved a nice session like that after missing the checkers the day before.

Arthur, what a blast! Thanks for your M.D. extraction!!! A little cliche, but...no pain, no gain. Well, not a huge amount of pain, but a heck of a lot of gain. Good thing you led the way, cuz I didn't think about heading out there to the checker board. Too bad we didn't strike gold twice...but then again, why haven't I heard from you after we left? hmmm......

Great fishing with you guys, as always and REALLY look forward to doing it again soon!

Hope you all enjoyed the read!

Great report and you guys slayed those checkers! I can't wait to get into my first calico with an LC!! Congrats on the fish and new species on the LC. Great to see you on the water again Dan. You got into those pancakes but that big ole legal is waiting there for you. The pictures with the leos is pretty cool, they do come in big numbers. Arthur has a surprise after he fished with you guys. The man is a machine and I think he's going to need new batteries to refuel for the week. Well I kind of ruined the surprise now... Thanks for the pictures and I hope to fish with you again Don. Way to man up and keep slaying.

Nice reading a report from you Don! Super happy that you beat the skunk and did it in style -- but checkered patterns are so 80's...I guess that is why they call you guys the Old Fogy Stogies.

Now I need to regroup with the Young Guns because it seems as though Arthur is pulling his Jedi mind tricks again...you know, he has the younglings go out and stir up the fish so that he can follow and catch em! JK Commander...seriously. I pooped my pants when you guys texted me your bounty the day after we had hit those AO's. I should have gone out with you but I was up north tending to a pre-planned camping trip with church friends.

Smiles and fish all around--that is the best kind of report. Now as to the casualty of war (the LC), did you take out your angst and break it yourself after having hooked yourself on it? You should have saved some of that blood for the leopard pool.

It was nice to see Dan got out from his vacation, though I don't know how much I would miss surf fishing if I were in Europe with my beautiful wife.

Great report Don!

Thanks Ken! Hey those checkers are golden oldies that never die! As for the fallen LC...operator error. Didn't check my backcast well enough and whacked my spare rod on my backpack. Pretty sure it was already weak from having slammed into rocks a couple of times, but I'm just glad the LC and not the spare rod broke. I think you shoulda took up the Commanders suggestion to join him on the next assault...you mighta ended up painted in brown plaid with us. Hope to see you out there soon!

Great Read! I have never caught a calico, ever, before. I guess after seeing this report, I'll be having to man up and hitting the rocks more often
I can't even imagine having treble hooks caught in my fingers. Heck, even without the barbs in my finger, I already start to cringe at the thought of having to pull it out. Hopefully those catches made your fingers
feel a lot better than if you got the skunk

Awesome pictures of the swarm of Leo's. I had one brush up in between my leg's for the first time out in the water last night, and it scared the heck out of me!
I also had my first LC crack on me in the same manner as yours did! I think same spot too :Surprised:
Congrats on the catches and hope to catch you out on the water.

Oh man! Looks like I missed out on a good sesh!!! I wish I could've been out there with you guys, but we had a great time in Mammoth slam'n the trout at the opener. The kids had a blast!

Don - I extracted a #14 treble from my brother's finger over the weekend, and he was scream'n like a girl. I can't imagine what the dishwater felt like with 3 x #6 holes in your hand!! :Smash: Only you!!! (SMH)

Arthur - How did you end up with the pig on the stringer again?!? That's some serious karma that you've got goin' on there. Nice Calico!! :Not Worthy:

Dan - As I mentioned before - Welcome Home!! Glad you made it back safely. Now doesn't a good ol' American Pancake breakfast taste WAY better than a blintz and espresso in Amsterdam??? :Big Grin: See you out there soon.

Dude, that's whacked. :EyePop: I don't know if I could keep on fishing with three frickin' hooks in my hand. You da man Bachiboy.
Looks like the Calico were on the chew. I caught one 12" Calico in Malibu once and it fought like a champ. Must have been tough trying to drag them out of their cover huh? Nice job all the way around for the over the hill crew.

Brother Don... you are da MAN! When I saw that Calico violently shaking with those hook embedded in your fingers, I was reaching for my Boga Grip to bash its head to stop it from flopping and prevent the remaining seven hooks on the LC from attaching to your hand. Instead, I pressed down hard on the fish until we figured out what to do... I felt really bad for putting that third hook into your finger. In hindsight, I should have cut off the free hooks before trying to yank the other one out. Oh well, just an unfortunate case of friendly fire. I'm glad everything turned out okay for both Angler and Calico. :Big Grin: Not sure if I would still be in the mood to keep fishing, but you re-engage the action like nothing even happened. That was quite a Calico bite Saturday morning and I wished it would have carried over to Sunday so Dan could have got to experience it too. It was a nice couple of sessions for the Veterans and we are ready to go into battle with the Young Guns.

Thanks Danny. Just remember the more rocks you fish, the increased risk of losing your LCs. If it weren't for the great fishing, I probably woulda been feeling a heck of a lot more pain. Thanks young buck! We got lucky and timed it well. Just wish we had gotten Dan on the bite the next day, although he got on a nice pancake bite. Maybe I shoulda bled in the water on day 2 to chum them up again! Never got the fingers looked at. Fortunately, I'm a professional at getting injured.:Rolls Eyes: Just kept an eye on the wounds and made sure that there wasn't any excessive swelling and that the fingers were moving freely. Cleaned them up thoroughly when I got home, and no signs of infection...all good. Dr. Wingnut did some seriously clean extractions... to the point where I couldn't find one of the exit wounds.

Thanks for posting such a great report of a great slay day..
AND it's great to see Dan back on the hunt.. welcome back, amigo!
Cheers,
Sid

Thanks Sid. Getting stuck helped make the story. No monster fish, so I had to think of something quick.

Thanks BB. I think I was under one of Arthur's Jedi mind tricks. He made me believe there was no pain, then had me bleed into the water to get the fish to school in front of us. Lots of fun with some buttoned down drags! Hope to get out there with you one of these days.

What's up Doc? Damned glad that you were there to pull them things out. Just plain ol' stupidity on my part. You even told me that we should cut the dangling hooks...then again, that would be a waste of good hooks. I guess me wanting to press on was a result of lack of catching as of late. Gotta strike while the irons hot, eh? Well, it was a helluva warm up for the war and your nighttime venture that you ended up going on. Glad we weren't pulling those hooks in the dark too!:Rolls Eyes: Well, let the fun begin Commander. Not sure if you're going to be back this weekend, but best of luck out there if you get back in time to get out there. Gotta check the conditions but was thinking about trying the A.O. you almost went to that checker-filled day.

Don, I was impressed when I got the text in the morning about the bass counts.. I wouldn't have expected it since we were there just the day before, but I guess the fogy stogies have some tricks up their sleeves and a load of experience:Envious:
Congratulations on the absolute slay-fest! I'm thinking I need to approach that AO differently the next time i'm there:Big Grin:
We saw that same swarm of leos during our session. There were so many that at one point I was trying to catch one by hand! and I came pretty close a few times:LOL:

Thanks Daniel! If Arthur didn't suggest going out there on them rocks, I wouldn't have done it. Those damned things are slippery. But I guess I had other things I shoulda been careful of. Those leos are a trip...you don't notice them at first, then the whitewater clears up and there all around you. Good times!

Glad to hear that you were able to get in some surf time this weekend. Been wondering what's been happening with you. Hope to be hearing about your big scores that are sure to come in the NEAR future!
