I always wanted to post this up, never knew what type of fish this was, I caught this @ Paradise Cove Early this year. I must admit that this thing fought me like hell on my 6lb. Test.....the funny thing is that I couldn't bring it up the pier because there was to much tension on the line and I also could not bring it up with the drag set, so I had to beach the thing like if it was a lunker....lol....that was embarassing....anyways, I thought it was a BSP, but the BSP to me look has more of that shiny silver scales, and this one was flat.....there was a school of atleast 20-30 them swarming all over and eating stuff off the bottom......do any of you know what type of fish this is?

Hey Sauce,

It just looks like a large barred surf perch..perhaps someone else can chime in?

Yeah that's what I thought, I caught hundreds of BSP's,....but this one threw me off because it did not have that shiny scales like the one on FISHMANIACS pic,...if you look at the one I caught its more of a flat color, it was not silver at all like a BSP....

Yup, appears to be a BSP. Nice one too! I'm wondering if it's off-colored because of the environment maybe...?

Sauce, do you recall if it had a blue spot on its gil plate? If so, then it's definitely a zebra perch.
I can't really tell from your pic.

You know what guys,...I'm leaning towards a Zebra perch.....I've caught HUNDREDS of BSP's before, and once again the BSP's have that shiny silver coat, this one doesnt....when I caught it, it was swimming in a school of atleast 30.....I read the description on HHYAKFISH's link, and it says the ZEBRA PERCH usually swim in schools....and it also say people harpoon these?...

hello jsauce,
thanks for the rpt
it's zebra... i've caught lots of these in laguna with moss. what kind of bair are u using? u will catch them with mussel once in a while, but moss is the bait of choice.
they fight much much harder then bsp. wrt taste, they are in the same class as mac, and when you clean them, the gut stink up the entire house.
80% of the time, u will find quarter size parasite under the gill, one on each side, sick looking basters.

Its funny that you say that, because when I was removing the hook I saw them parasites inside its mouth, that was sooo disgusting.....by the way, you guys won't believe what I caught it with..
"FROZEN PEAS"
Thanks for confirming that it was a Zebra Perch...

lol... glad u get to see the parasites

no surprise on the peas
it's great for opaleye, butterlip, even small bsp & calico

most outragous fish i caught with peas is a 2lb bonito
must have been an accident cuz there were tons of smelts fighting for the peas
