Decided to fish the Poway derby with my pops and just have a good time for the day. Had a boat pre purchased and was out to our spot by 6:20 am. By 9 AM I had 2 trout, both about 1.5-2 pounders, and my pops had 1 at 2.75 pounds. Decided to head back in for a quick bathroom and food break. I didn't want to limit out too early with all small trout so I was in no hurry to get back out. :D

Headed back out around noon and noticed there was about a dozen boats in the small area between the boat dock buoy line and the pier, so we decided to cruise the edge and see what was going on. Saw a few fish being caught every now and than but the bite wasn't wide open or anything. I had a solid bite on a micetail on my 2nd cast, but the trout made a run under our boat before we were able to net it and ended up snapping off. Next cast, had a big bite but snapped off immediately this time taking my sinker and carolina keeper as well. Ended up cutting about 10 feet of line to start fresh as I didn't want to lose any more fish.

During this time my pops was able to bring in 2 trout at about 2 pounds apiece. Now he's in the lead 3 trout to my 2. We than saw a huge hookup a few boats away , it ended being the tournament winner at 6.47 pounds. I heard the trout made a run and wrapped around the anchor near the boat so the kid's dad just grabbed the fish out of the water, into the boat with his hands!! Nice save!

My pops friend was passing by on the way back from San Diego so he decided to stop by and fish with us. We headed in around 2:30 to pick him up. Ate some food, grabbed some snacks and headed back out around 3:30. We headed back towards hidden bay for about an hour and saw no action so we went back to the spot by the boat dock buoy line to finish up the day with the evening bite.

We set up my dad's friend with a couple poles with powerbait, and he ended up getting his limit of 1.5 - 2.5 pounders within about an hour and half. (Limit at Poway is 4 trout). Dad caught his last trout to fill out his limit as well. (He had never used micetails before but I set him up with it and he swears he'll never touch powerbait again. Caught all his fish on a micetail on the retrieve.)

During t his time I had a few short strikes and farmed 1. I threw out a powerbait setup with a 4 foot leader and was turning to setup my 2nd rod with a lure when my rod gets absolutely slammed. I see the rod bend in half over the boat so I grab it, reel in slightly, make sure the hook is set...and Fight is on!

I could tell from the beginning t his was a larger fish as he went on some massive runs. Every time I would make some progress in bringing him in, he would peel twice the drag back out. I loosened my drag slightly and decided to tire him out as I was using 2# test. After a solid 5 minute fight, I got him close the boat and caught my first glimpse. As soon as my pops reached down with the net, he went nuts and took off down under the boat, than back towards the front of the boat towards the anchor rope! Luckily I was able to steer him back away from the rope towards the side of the boat and we successfully netted him. By the look of him I actually thought I had a chance at placing in the top 3 in the trout division. Had about an hour left so I threw out 1 catfish rod and 1 trout rod to finish up my limit on trout. In hindsight, I should have targetted bass and catfish for the mixed bag division as ANY weight would have landed me in the top 3. The #1 trout winner was also the #1 mixed bag winner. (fish can count towards more than 1 division.)

1st place bass was 2.7 and 1st place catfish was 3.76. Only 20 bass weighed in for the entire day.

I didn't get any bites in the next half hour so we decided to head back in so I could go weigh in. Official weight ended up being 5.75, my new personal best, good enough for 3rd place! 2nd place was at 5.9 and 1st was at 6.47. Almost had a heart attack when at the last minute I saw a guy walk up with a massive trout but luckily it was the #1 trout that had already been weighed in. Got a goodie bag with some Decoy swimbait lures, free permits/boat rentals for lake poway, a net, a half day sportfishing trip w rentals included to Point Loma, and some other goodies.

This was my 1st tournament I've been a part of and it was a blast!!! Glad I was able to find the fish as it looked like a lot of people had a tough time finding the bite. During the few hours we were on fire, a lot of the boats around us weren't having much luck at all. Quite a few boats passed by mentioning they had caught nothing for the day. On shore, I saw a mix of people walking back with full limits, and people coming back with absolutely nothing for the entire day.

Oh, we had a tough time staying anchored in one spot. Was a constant battle of lifting anchor, driving back, dropping anchor...leading to drifting and turning slowly away. Rinse and repeat.

Wow great report. Thanks for posting. I am not able to fish these days, but reports like these help me get by.

I've always wondered about Lake Poway, and especially that derby.
