I went fishing Sunday 4-21-13, with Lal on his 18’ boat the “Rubber Ducky”. We launched out of Davies in Long Beach at 5:30 am, our beginning destination being the local structure reefs.

The forecast called for little wind, with a 2 foot swell. The wind was calm, yet the choppy swell made it an unpleasant ride uphill to our starting destination. Water temps were again an issue, from 55.9 to 56.3 early on.

As we arrived for our initial drift, we had swells coming from two different directions, out of the south and out of the west. This made for an awkward sideways drift, and the current was very strong. Forget about our size of choice, ¾ oz. lead heads. Even a 1 oz. was difficult to hit bottom, let alone hold it. Lal moved to a 1.5 oz. and myself, a 2 oz. lead head.

Nearly two hours later we were both fish less. Quite a shocker, given good meter marks, and plenty of structure covered on our drifts, which were very rapid. We had both had a few short bites; however, most drifts were fruitless. Maybe the nearly full moon allowed the Bass to feed all night? Never the less we were determined to search the area as it has recently yielded some nice Bass.

I finally get a solid hook up, and I wind up a 2 pound Sand Bass. On Lal’s next drop he hooks his first Sand Bass, a solid 14 inches, maybe? I get hammered on the drop, wind, wind, and set the hook, oh darn, unbuttoned. Lal also gets bit on the fall of the plastic. A good hook set, a better size fish, yep a 3 pound Dandy Sandy:

My next cast hits the bottom, and I take up the slack and wham, a good head shaker. This fish works me all the way up. A very nice Calico Bass:

Another half hour goes by with no additional bites. It was 9am and wow we had a boat limit, all of five fish, what happened? We thought the recent flurry meant the tide had turned, not to be yet. Lal moved us into deeper water. The current had backed off just a bit allowing us to test the unknown angler.

Lal is again bit on the fall, and has a solid hook set. Yep, just then the unknown angler gets bit. Lal sets the hook on the unknown angler rig. I get bit on the fall, we have a triple going. Lal unhooks his 3 pound Sand Bass and attends to the unknown angler fish. As I am reeling in my fish, my unknown angler rig gets bit. Just missed having a quad going?
For the next several hours we had a steady pick on the Sand Bass, adding two more Calico Bass from 1 to 2 pounds. Then I caught this 3.25 pound Sand Bass, which became our last picture moment fish of the day:

Lal and I both caught numerous cookie cutter size 2.5 to 3 pound Sand Bass from there on. We ended the day with 33 Bass total, all released to fight another day. We called it a day at high noon as the wind was increasing and so was the scope out.

Thanks Lal, another fun adventure on the Ducky.
Hook up! Cory

Sounds like a nice days fishing. 2oz lead is heavy. What type of rod do you use with that much weight?
