Conditions seemed to be shaping up nicely for this weekend so Thien(bloox8) and I decided to hit the surf:Big Grin: We decided on a beach that was shown to us by our SWAT brother, Jason(jaysuuun). This beach has lots of nice structure and we figured we would have a good shot here since the holes and trenches would be filled with the early morning high tide.

Conditions: Clear skies, 2-3ft swells in rapid sets, light breeze
Weapons: Abu Garcia Revo Sx, 8ft Clarus, LCs
Duration: 6:00-10:00am
AO: South Bay
Fish Count: dlmoo312: 26.5" halibut(K.I.A.) - bloox8: 1 shovelnose

Thursday night, Thien and I ended up playing a cash game of poker at a friend's house that lasted until 3:00am. We decided to go ahead and head to the AO, and upon arriving, took a quick power nap in the parking lot and hit the beach by 6:00am. Right away we start working the beach, fan casting as we go. The waves were a little rough but manageable, and it was a beautiful day with no one around and tons of wildlife. There was a particularly high amount of dolphin activity throughout the day and a lot of them too! It was fun watching them surfing the waves and putting on a show of aerial acrobatics. After a while, i'm a good ways down the beach from Thien and I find a nice hole around the same area that I had witnessed Jason land his pb 36.5" halibut. I casted out and right as I start to crank I get a strong hit and the fish is on! Right away the fish breaches the surface and I see that it a large halibut:Shocked: Luckily the rapid sets of waves helped me get this fish in fairly quickly, and after a short battle, I secured her with a quick tail grab. Right away I knew she was a definite legal:Big Grin:

I had promised my parents a halibut for some time now and I ended up taking this one home. Food pics to come:Big Grin:

We kept fishing for a little while longer and Thien managed a shovelnose to beat the skunk. We will be hitting the same beach again tomorrow, and I promised Thien dibs on the spot.:LOL: Sorry for jacking your qualifier fish, bro! I promise I didn't mean to!:Razz: Hopefully that hole has a new, bigger resident waiting for you tomorrow:Wink:

Bonus Report

4/20/13

Thien and I decided to hit the same AO for another shot at some legals. We arrived in the morning and after working the beach for a little while I hooked into a good sized shovelnose. I wanted to get back to fishing for the targeted species so I tried to horse the fish in which resulted in a bent out hook. I quickly switched to another lc and resumed fishing. I told Thien that he should go over to the honey hole early, and a short while after he makes the move I end up hooking up... Now I feel bad for suggesting that he move down the beach, but to my relief it was only a short:Razz: I take a quick pick and after releasing it I see Thien hooked up down the beach:Big Grin: As I get closer I can see that he beached the fish and someone is there helping him out. It was Albert(jinbow):Smile: Thien's fish ended up also being a short and after a quick release we got back to fishing. It was nice meeting and chatting with you Albert! Looking forward to fishing with you sometime, maybe at your favorite AO?:Wink:

After about an hour and a half of working the beach for nothing I suggested making a move, but Thien was determined to fish out this spot so we continued on. I saw some bait fish scatter just beyond casting distance and I signaled Thien over. We started fan casting the area, and I hook up again. After a short fight I bring it in and it's a legal flatty:Smile: I gave this fish to Thien to take home to his parents. I ended up with one more short before we had to leave.

4/21/13

I had a couple hours in the morning to fish and I decided to go on a solo recon mission to try a spot I had been interested in for awhile now. Unfortunately I wasn't able to continue my streak and ended the day with a skunk. It was a nice looking stretch of beach with good structure and i'm looking forward to fishing it again in the future.

Lol that's exactly what we talked about on our walk back up to the car. Thien landed all of his memorable catches and legals while fishing without me. I'm thinking he should go on more solo missions as well:LOL: It may help our cause when it comes time for the rookies/vets battle as well!

Thanks Peter! Right after we finished taking pictures of the legal a group of 3-4 dolphins cruised straight towards us and ended up swimming in the hole I pulled the flatty out of. They were literally 10ft in front of us. It was an amazing sight but I couldn't help but think that they scared away any other flatties that may have been hiding in that hole lol

Dude... when I found that hook inside the halibut's belly I was like HOLY S%$# :EyePop: The hook was almost as big as a regular lighter lol
Still can't believe it. Pretty crazy stuff. That goes to show how aggressive halibut get, especially during spawning season.
