Tide: Outgoing high tide
Swells: 2-4 feet
Weather: About 52ºF and sunny
Conditions: Clear water with some kelp loose. No bait fish present. Onshore wind.
AO: San Diego Beaches
Pole: Shimano Clarus Medium and Abu Garcia Revo SX
Lure: Lucky Craft Flash Minnow 110 MS Ghost Jack Smelt
Target: Halibut and White Sea Bass
I got to the AO around 6AM in time for some grey light fishing. This is a good time for fishing because many of the fish start to become more active. I throw my first cast in and my lure get stuck right away. I thought I was stuck on some kelp but the line started to head shake and take some drag. First cast and fish on! The fish felt very heavy and I had a feeling it could have been a bat ray. This fish stuck down to the bottom many times and took small drag runs. I couldn't gain any line on it for about 5 minutes and then it started to give in. About 6 minutes into the fight, I realized it was a big shovelnose guitarfish but wasn't sure how big. Finally got it to the sand and Danny tailed it really quick. This was the biggest shovelnose I've caught by far and ended up measuring about 47 inches. Wrong flatfish. My back treble hook on the FM110 got broken and bent out while the other hooks were bent too. Some quick pictures and quickly released back to the water. I changed up the hooks really quick because I really liked this using this lure.
Sorry for the blurry pictures

I continued to fish and spots with loose kelp but find a hole where there was minimal kelp. I worked this hole for the rest of the morning and finally got a good hit on a slow and steady retrieve. The fish gave some big head shakes right away and felt hefty. I thought it could have been a legal halibut. It didn't give me any strong drag runs and I brought it to the skinny and thought it was a corbina. I got it to the sand and it was my first White Sea bass from the surf this year!:Fishing Catch: My adrenaline was pumping and it was a decent size one. Measured about 25 inches and just 3 inches short from a legal size WSB. These fish are really fragile, so I got it back to the water really quick. This was one of my goals this year to catch one and I already picked one up! My goal now is to catch a legal size one and I can't wait! What a beautiful fish and I wish I could have caught the coloration of the fish better. The picture doesn't show the purple tint WSB usually have.
