I Keep Getting Lucky! S.W.A.T. at my Favorite Hole... Again! Extra Report.

Looked up the conditions last night and supposed to be 2-3 ft swells. I got out to the AO around 1130AM with it being bright and sunny. There were a lot of surfers around with people laying around on the beach. Tide was outgoing high tide and the surge as the wave crashed to shore was pretty strong. I could see kelp on top of the water and snagged a couple of times. The water had a murky white green to it and pass outer waves breaks, the water was dark blue and clear. I wanted to throw to the dark, clear water but the wind was up a bit and wasn't having any of that.

Armed with my Sexy Smelt LC FM110, I moved and kept trying to find open spots away from the surfers and worked a good trench for a bit. Kept throwing there for a good hour for nothing. I decided to take a break and head to the restroom and take my time since I figured I need the water to get a little lower to fish the hole I've been catching them in.

I went straight to my favorite hole and around 115PM I get a good hit on a slow and steady retrieve and fight was on. Was a small one about 13" and took some quick pictures and off it went. Kept fishing and felt like I was playing frogger. Casting and trying to avoid the stray kelp on top of the water as I retrieve. Sometimes I'd snag it but I had a feeling there had to be more that wanted to play.

Cast as far as I could with a low swing in a nice dark blue spot that didn't look so murky and started to retrieve slowly. SLAM!!! :EyePop: This was the most violent and strongest I ever felt anything hit a LC before and I knew it was going to be big when it straight pulled drag right away. I almost thought it could be a white seabass.. This thing started to take drag like nothing and it hunkered down once. The fish pull dragged one more time and POP!! Rod went straight and I thought the lure or line snapped :Sad: I tried to reel but I couldn't and look down to see that the fish pulled drag so hard that my line was on my bail and popped the bail open!! Closed the bail real quick and this fish was still on :Twisted: Got it to the skinny and had to really time it but the waves weren't helping. The fish kept swimming away in the skinny water and finally I just went in and tailed it.

26 1/2" even though I thought I saw 27"

I tried for a bit longer and got another big hit but not as violent. Big drag pulls and fought it for a good 1 minute. The fish hunkered down and I tried lifting and forcing it up too much and lure popped off :Angry: Knew it was a heavy one but at least I added to my count :Cool:

5th legal in the surf for the year and 10th overall now! I couldn't be any luckier. Had a dad and his kid come over and take some pictures for me. He asked what the legal size was and told him 22" and as he finished taking a couple of pictures for me, I released it. He was surprised but understood as he fished himself :Big Grin: I hope you guys enjoy my reports and get out there and fish :Smile:

Woke up early and I couldn't go back to sleep and the clock read 530AM. Got up and got ready and checked conditions. Looked good and wanted to see if the bite was still hot. Really clear water and not as much kelp floating around, so I work a couple of spots before getting to my favorite spot.

Got to my favorite spot :Fishing Hole: and 2 casts in and I'm on. Today I was using my baitcaster (Abu Garcia Revo SX) and medium Clarus with a MS Ghost Jack Smelt LC. The fish didn't feel that big but I was excited I was on. The fish finally realized it was in the skinny and took off a couple of times pulling drag and I just stuck the wood to it and horsed it in. I didn't think it was that big and was just going to throw it back real quick but decided to do a quick measure.

Did a quick release and back to fishing :Fishing Catch: I ended up getting a bunch of hits but nothing connecting. Finally after a bit, I ended up hooking 2 more shorts. I casted around the hole for some more for nothing and tried different spots. Headed out and got some donuts. I think I ate too many of them :whistle:

Supercool! Great looking fish, clean, damn near elegant. Sufers hmmm...Now where in the heck is this halibut hole..? I fished Malibu this morning at dawn. Spectacularly beautiful and calm...but no fish. Thanks for showing us that halibut do really still live on this coast.

Thanks fishshep. I got a couple of videos of my catches but sometimes when casting over a 100 times or more, you forget you have a camera on top of your head when you finally catch a fish :LOL: It's usually that or the battery dies first. I'm going to save the video clips and kind of do a overall one maybe and if I can get more RAM for my computer to edit. Editing takes up a lot of memory!
