Talking to this (rod and reel) commercial fisherman yesterday and he said his grandpa taught him 30 years ago to always carry a bag of small pebbles. He said they would toss out hand fulls and the sound would simulate the feeding pellets at the trout farm and draw them in.

Anyone heard of this ?
Is it legal ? DR

Illegal. Any item placed in the water capable of attracting fish is considered chumming. And yes, it does work on stockers.

So when I’m fishing a creek, and some kids come up near me and start throwing pebbles in the water, I should actually thank them? :Smile:

Yes, fish eggs are a legal bait, and quite effective on spawners with lockjaw.

Any Row has to be Processed..????
Im sure that means it has to be dead & not capable of creating fish. Salted, frozen etc etc..
Dont take row from a dead fish and use it ILLEGAL..

It is not illegal. The treated and processed clause applies to food items, not fish eggs. You may use eggs right out of the fish if you want:

4.00. BAIT-GENERAL.
Legally acquired and possessed invertebrates, mollusks, crustaceans, amphibians (except salamanders), fish eggs and treated and processed foods may be used for bait, except:

(a) No species specified as endangered, threatened, candidate, fully-protected, or otherwise protected under state and federal law may be used as bait.
(b) No salamander may be used as bait. See section 5.05 for other amphibians that may be used as bait.
(c) See Section 5.35 for restrictions on crayfish;
(d) See Section 7.50(b)(74) for restriction on bait collecting in Hat Creek;
(e) No trout may be maintained or possessed in a live condition in any container on or attached to any boat;
(f) Except for restrictions listed under special regulations, dead ocean fish may be used as bait statewide. This section supersedes the provisions of sections 4.10, 4.15, 4.20, 4.25 and 4.30.

my kids used to throw in gravel at the lake when i was fishing for trout close to shore and it would definatly get a feeding frenzy going. So the answer is yes, I have tried it. I immediatly put 2 and 2 together and figured they thought it was feeding time.

Ever fish for trout when it rains? Epic, the rain acts as feeding pellets and that turns on a feeding frenzy too. You notice pay lakes don't allow rock throwing!!!!! This method works and see it all the time.

I have seen some people using corn as chum . Throwing small hand fills . Also seen people use salmon eggs as chum. They use a plastic spoon with long type handle and fill up the spoon w/ the salmon eggs and flick them into the water .

I have seen some people using corn as chum .

The guy told me he would use frozen peas.
He also mentioned using raw hard pinto beans for chumming Calico Bass.
