DEFINITION OF INSANITY:

"Doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results"
Albert Einstein

So, are you insane or just fishing????????

Well it been a while since I’ve done anything worth reporting on…..no,no really, I haven’t got much of anything “on the sand” since last NOV! DAMNNNNNNNNNN!
Had some good hook ups on some drag pulling fish but came unbuttoned just as they came to color…… lots of recon and lessons learned, meeting all the cool folks you run to working some of our wonderful coastline….ahhhhhh.
There have been some absolutely stellar reports out lately so it appears the bite is improving and as such so has for me. Been staying pretty much south LA County with a couple San Diego and Ventura County sessions tossed in there.
So, on to the report……I will try and be "short and sweet" ‘cause really, nothing at all like what I’ve been readin lately.

Date: Sat March 23, and Mon, March 25, 2013
Time: Grey light to about 1100/1200 hrs both days
A.O: South LA County beaches (jumped around)
Terrian: Mostly wide sandy beach with little structure
Conditions: Sat, MAYTAG! Mon, 1-2’ surf, clean clear water, incoming 3’+tide and then the outgoing until +2’.
Gear: Daiwa Luna 253 on a 7’ Carrot Stix loaded with ProP 20lb braid.
Fish Count: 1 BSP, 7 SNGF, 2 Leos

Saturday, after some re-shifting of A.O.s, I met up with a couple of legends…..Team Trolltoon! Couldn’t pass up a chance to wet a line with these two fellow SWAT members but the conditions and gear would trouble this session. Not a lot a pics cause, well, not a lot of fish!
After a quick “good morning” we went at the surf and it was a workout. Deep water but shore pound jerking, pushing, breaking kept you on your toes not to get drowned and knocked off your feet. Working my way south I could see the distance growing between me and Pontoon and Trollmeister. Trolly had himself a hole, Pontoon had his head down in his reel……..couple fans casts later I look and see he left the sand….got a quick text advising of some reel issues but will be right back.
Short time later I saw him back at it but was short lived with him back on the dry sand head down looking at the reel in his hands………I was on a retrieve and just then BAM! Fish On!!!! The quick hit with a good pull I fought it up the beach a short ways before bringing it ashore:
http://i173.photobucket.com/albums/w64/nippletwister_photos/Fishing/032313a_zps6750aee6.jpg

Showing off my skunkbuster I whistled down the beach arms waving. I was determined to work a large stretch of beach I made a fast CPR and went on flinging.
As I reached my turnaround point I got another text from Pontoon: reel, no worky. They where outta time so they headed out. Brother, I know how the equipment not working can be a frustrating thing….trust me, I know.
I kept at it a few more hours for nadda, man this washing machine surf can kick my butt………

Monday was a little better in all respects……surf, clarity, and nobodyelse there but me!!!!!!!!
Little further south from Saturday’s A.O. I walked onto the beach still dark but enough to make my way to the water, with tide still incoming to a 5’ high within a couple hours. Not long after maybe 10 casts I get slammed hard and starts pulling drag heading down the beach. Missing the headshake I know this was the flatfish of the wrong kind. After a fun run back and forth burning drag, pullin it back I was able to get it to the sand:

After that it was pretty much like that for a few hours at that spot:

Couple of Leos in the mix:

Worked a large portion of the beach but that was about it, seven SNGF and a couple of Leos.
Was a beautiful day, had the place to myself and got to pull on something hard which I was beginning to doubt I would be any time soon……..

Thanks for reading, they’re out there………tight lines everyone…

John,

I hope you'll accept my apologies for cutting the losses so early. I had to go back and respool and that seemed to temporarily fix the problem and once I got back I made an effort to work my way toward you but it just wasn't to be. I normally carry a back up and what do you know when I really need it..........I didn't have it.:Embarrassed:

I pretty much knew you more than made up for Saturday from your text this morning. Great job out there John.........I had no doubts that you were very quickly going to get back in the water and it paid off! Good job out there..........There's big halibut out there waiting for you. :Thumbs Up:

Hey John, you need a right handed reel to catch Halibut. That's what Chris told me...

Well it looks like you had fun with Mr Wiggles and a couple pups. All good practice for when the flat fish of the right kind comes along.
Best of luck.

WWO

ps Have you ever checked into the Allstar Link on the repeaters?

Looks like a fun day, I was out at dockweiler from 7am till 2pm on saturday without a bite. Hope I can have a multiple bite day like yours soon. Thanks for the pics and report.

John those are some good numbers on the SNGF and Leos. The last time we were out there, we couldn't get any one of those to catch on the LC even though they were swarming around our feet. Looked like you had a nice day all to yourself. The next "SNGF" may turnout to be a flat fish of the right kind

Hey John,

Good to see you back in the surf! Looks like you had some fun out there. Nice mix bag there...just make sure you leave some YFC out there for me! I'm sure the flatfish of the right kind will be hanging from your LC soon. Hope all is well and that we can hit the sand together one of these days.

Take care...
Don

Well, let's see: a piggy BSP, 7 SNGF and a couple of leo's...well my muscles would be sore from all of that catching. Great session sir! Looks like that reel is a workhorse. MAybe I need to win one of those at the next HG event!

Brother John... too bad we don't have a category on the Leader Board for the "Most Shovelnose"
At least you got a good work out and I'm sure each one got your heart pumping that it might be the Flat Fish of the right kind.
Glad to see the Legendary Team TrollToon joining you out in the surf also.
Conditions looks fantastic towards the end of the week, but it's Easter weekend... I don't think I can fish. :Envious:

Hey John! Those are a great couple of days in my book. I hope to see you back out there, as I'm now on a mission, and trying to get out as much as I can too. Especially now that the bite seems to have taken an upward tick! Let's hope it continues on in to the summer. See you in the surf!!

When fishing with Jason last week, we came across a pocket of calm water that was absolutely crawling with leos and shovelnose
Those things sure can put up a nice fight! Congratulations on the fish count, John. Looks like there's plenty of life in the surf right now!

Hey John,
Don't you wish that sometimes you can split the fish for 2 days...:Rolls Eyes:
I wish I would have got some fish yesterday, but no bait, and chocolate colored water must have scared them away.
I'm gonna try and hit it once more tomorrow.
I'll let you know if anything changes.

Yeah, it was pretty much the same, just had to time your hook-set and swing......they would bump the LC and I could feel it and then some would snag the tail......had one that wasn't even hooked just line tangled around the tailfin.....hahahahaha.....was too much fun.....thanks for posting brother....see you soon........
