View Full Version : S.W.A.T. 1st LEGAL OF THE YEAR AND A MONSTER IS AWAKENED! LOL

Lately I've been polishing up my surf gear waiting for the surf to heat up. I picked up a new reel (a Daiwa Luna) picked up some new LC's (even though I've got plenty unopened) put on some fresh line and even painted a few patterns. It had been months since I hit the surf and I missed the feeling of a nice sized fish grabbing the LC. I really wanted to get out, but as some of you know, Tess and I have been pretty busy lately.

Well, after a few "motivational" text reports from my SWAT brothas:Wink:, I finally found a few hours during my busy week to get out there. Originally it was just going to be a solo mission since I was feeling a little rusty, but I thought it would be nice to have some good company. I got to chat with Thien and Daniel at the gathering of eagles and I said that I would hit them up the next time I went out. I shot them both a text that was replied promptly and it was game on.

I chose an AO that I hadn't fished in quite sometime, but based on the intel I received from my SWAT brothas I figured it could be holding some fish since it was just a few beaches down. I was a little hesitant (especially since I would be having guests with me and I wanted everyone to catch something), but my gut was telling me to go with this AO and I'm glad I did.

The plan was to meet up at 6am SHARP! That didn't work out too well because the boys were early at 545 and I was late at 610. However, graylight was at 630 so everyone was still on time  I was late so the boys were already fishing ahead. I knew Thien was still on a quest for his "qualifying fish" so I would let them fish ahead and get first dibs on all the honey holes. I met the boys in the dark to see Thien already hooked up! Sweet! A good sign! :Big Grin:

First hookup of the morning. A shovel nose for Thien

http://i584.photobucket.com/albums/ss284/Jaysuuun/DSC01773_zps8f484674.jpg

I was next to hookup with a little shorty. SKUNK OFF!!

http://i584.photobucket.com/albums/ss284/Jaysuuun/DSC01775_zps3e040cd0.jpg

First butt of the morning for Thien. Daniel also hooks up with a shovel nose, but it wasn't pictured. SKUNK OFF!

http://i584.photobucket.com/albums/ss284/Jaysuuun/image_zps24d0ab60.jpeg

When I was reeling the shorty, Thien had noticed the softer action of my rod and we chatted a bit about my setup. I told him how much I liked my setup and the only problem was that I still have not caught any legals on it. As soon as I made that comment..... BENNDDO!

My first legal of the year at 23inches!

http://i584.photobucket.com/albums/ss284/Jaysuuun/DSC01776_zps5416f793.jpg

http://i584.photobucket.com/albums/ss284/Jaysuuun/DSC01777_zpsdbcfa2e8.jpg

I debated keeping the fish, but I wanted a flattie with a little more MEAT on it so I released it. I tell Thien that if I catch a bigger model that I would take it home to the dinner table, but it never happened

http://i584.photobucket.com/albums/ss284/Jaysuuun/Image_zps79982d75.jpg

Things were looking good. It was still dark out and a legal had already hit the sand. We expected the bite to go wide open at that point, but it was just the opposite. We would go on without a nibble for the next hour. Conditions were perfect: 1-2ft swells, overcast weather, clear water and huge holes/troughs for the fish to sit in.

We continue to march on and sweep the area when Daniel points out some baitfish boiling at the surface. We aggressively work the area and soon after, Thien hooks up with another short.

http://i584.photobucket.com/albums/ss284/Jaysuuun/DSC01780_zps0eeabffc.jpg

We continue to work the area hard, when I feel a small "tick" at my rod tip. I reel in some, tighten the line and my rod loads up. What could it be? It wasn't fighting much or pulling drag, just dead weight. Aha! I bet it's a flat fish of the wrong kind

I continue to horse the "shovel nose" in so I can hurry up and get my lure back out there for a nice flattie, but I notice now that I'm having a bit of trouble bringing this thing in. Damn! Must be a big "shovel nose"! :Rolls Eyes:

I see that the end of my line is only a few feet from me now, but the water was murky and still could not make out how big this "shovel nose" was. As the water receeded Thien and I see the silhouette of the biggest flattie we've ever laid eyes on and we both scream like little girls.

The flattie, now aware of what's going on, begins to thrash violently and my heart jumps right out of my chest. The fish would continue to come in and out making a few runs. I could not get a big enough wave to push the big girl up on to the sand and I begin to panic because now I see that only one of my trebles is attached to the fish's jaw. All I could do was hold on.

Finally, Poseidon answers and gives me that push I was looking for. Daniel and Thien swoop in with the assist and barricade the fish from going back into the water. BBOOOMMM!

MY PB AND FIRST 30in+ HALIBUT!!

http://i584.photobucket.com/albums/ss284/Jaysuuun/DSC01781_zps2a81d2ad.jpg

I originally told the guys it taped out at 37in but after looking at the pics it looks closer to 36.5in

http://i584.photobucket.com/albums/ss284/Jaysuuun/DSC01782_zps5b13e991.jpg

http://i584.photobucket.com/albums/ss284/Jaysuuun/DSC01783_zpsd860ac6e.jpg

Now earlier I had mentioned that I let the boys work ahead because I wanted my guests to have the first crack at the fish. What they didnt know was that I pulled a page out of Wingnut's book and allowed them to wake the fish up as I swooped in for the kill! MUUHHUUAAAHHHAA :Secret::Twisted:

We were all happy for my catch :Big Grin:

http://i584.photobucket.com/albums/ss284/Jaysuuun/DSC01785_zps6d402446.jpg

But this is how we really felt :Dancing Banana::Dancing Banana::Dancing Banana:

http://i584.photobucket.com/albums/ss284/Jaysuuun/DSC01792_zps57271b23.jpg

And now for some solo shots.

http://i584.photobucket.com/albums/ss284/Jaysuuun/DSC01789_zps639ccbfe.jpg

Yo Thien! I said SOLO!

http://i584.photobucket.com/albums/ss284/Jaysuuun/DSC01788_zps498a5cf1.jpg

http://i584.photobucket.com/albums/ss284/Jaysuuun/DSC01790_zps3a18f4af.jpg

And of course the release

http://i584.photobucket.com/albums/ss284/Jaysuuun/DSC01794_zpsaf217087.jpg

It took awhile to revive the big girl, but she regained her energy and took off like a torpedo.

http://i584.photobucket.com/albums/ss284/Jaysuuun/DSC01795_zps2187532a.jpg

We continue to work back to the parking lot, but that would be the last fish of the day. We hopped over to another AO, but it did not produce. Instead Daniel and Thien had a friendly competition of who could catch the smallest crab.

Yo Thien I don't think crabs qualify as a species for your SWAT induction

Total fish count:

Daniel: 1 Shovelnose

Thien: 1 Shovelnose, 2 Shorts

Jason: 1 Short, 2 Legals :Big Smile:

What a day! It wouldn't have been possible without the intel from my SWAT brothas and Daniel & Thien stirring up the fish for me. J/K But really thanks for joining me out there today and being there to share that awesome experience. Oh and thanks for lunch and the ride.

Dont really know when I'll be out there again, but I think this will satisfy my surf fishing urges for awhile. Til next time

All kidding aside Jason.....A job well done my friend! You were prepared and you prevailed! I have one of those exact LC patterns that Arthur gave me in an unopened box too. Might just have to get her wet along with a change up on the tail hook also....LOL
You know what they say "Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery"!!!
You sir have raised the bar quite a bit for the SWAT leaderboard competition as well as yourself.

The only thing that would have made this a little bit sweeter for you is if Tess had been there too. She would have been doing backflips down the beach!

Thanks for the detailed report and the inspiration to all of the surf fisherman out there who now believe that dream catches do come true !

Oh yeah, by catching a legal halibut from the surf followed by its mother! You guys are setting the bar so high these days and so early! I guess I need to get out there and do some serious recon.

Also, as I mentioned to Arthur, if you need someone to scout out ahead and get the fish interested, let me know. :Envious:

Both of us got sidetracked and we never made it. Glad you guys were able to get over there and take it to em! Man, that is so awesome..quite the early wedding gift from Poseidon! I'm sure he has a few more waiting for you, and, if that's your gift, what's he got in store for Tess? She better get out there and go collect!:Big Grin:.

Congrats! That thing is huge! You guys took some great pictures. Great write-up too, I felt like I was there with you guys. Arthur texted me that you caught a huge halibut and I was banging my head on the wall :Head Bang: for not going. I swear I was going to go at grey-light to that same AO . Conditions seemed perfect when I looked at it the night before. You guys are slaying them out there and couldn't be happier for you guys. These reports just keep getting better :Big Grin:.

I went this morning to that AO and man, the conditions changed quick. Waves were 3-4 feet and eel grass on almost every cast. I could see all the great holes and troughs but nothing was there.

Thanks for the report and congrats again. The group picture is pretty hilarious with you guys holding your hands in the air.

Jason, Jason, Jason... I know your strategy bro... you take 8 months off from the surf so all your S.W.A.T. Brothers can pound the sand, stirring them up for you, and then you step in and nail them. You are taking "my" tactics to the extreme. How could you use our new recruit and prospect like that... cold blooded bro, cold blooded.

Wow, what a perfect way to welcome in the first day of Spring, with a beautiful Flattie. I bet Tess is green with envy, lol
You now sit atop the Leader Board with the biggest Halibut and a target on your back. The pressure is on, but there's no other place that you'd rather be. Congratulations on the Personal Best Halibut... which is bigger than mine, by the way. :Envious: Like I told you over the phone, couldn't have happened to a nicer and deserving guy. :Big Grin: Daniel raised the bar earlier this year and you just pushed it up a bit higher... well done my friend, very well done!

Also, kudos for the release... upholding the S.W.A.T. Code to "Always Release your Personal Best Fish." :Applause:

Thien, it's YOUR turn!

So far this year, S.W.A.T. has put a 36", a 33" and a 30" Halibut on the board... I think it's going to be a great year in the surf.
Can't wait until the White Sea Bass shows up. :Big Grin:

That "tick" that you felt and no immediate pressure when the fish hit is probably the Halibut striking the lure from behind. They sometime follow the lure for a distance and when they decide to strike, lunges forward and hit the lure. When they do this, they are traveling with the retrieve pushing the lure forward, giving you that "tick" followed by a momentary dead line sensation. You can feel this better when using fluorocarbon line. A lot of fish are lost this way because if they don't hit the lure solid and get themself hooked, the lure will pop out because of the slack in the line. Whenever I feel that little "tick", I quickly crank fast to take out the slack and set the hook. Those who fish with me knows that I swing on anything, swinging at anything that doesn't feel normal. Swing away, doesn't cost you anything and only good things can come from it.

dammmmmn nice f**kn catch bro,... I'm so jealous :/ i've been fishing the surf's of LB for weeks with no hali bites...... caught 2 barracuda tho off the LC last week from the surf..... scared off a 30+ hali walking along the surf/rock line in LB that made me jump out the waters ironically lol.... I post my personal best last year 30in hali caught on Memorial day. But 36.5 takes the cake bro! What's bugging me the most is, what does AO mean lol (sorry if it's a dumb question)

Congratulations on your first +30" and booting Daniel out of his leader position on the board  Daniel, its ok man. There are plenty of other challenge categories..

......
I still can't believe how big she was. When I saw that tail pop out of the water I was in complete shock and excitement. I knew she was big but I had no idea that she was going to be a BEAST :Bug Eyes: I thought FOR SURE she was +40" cuz I've never seen one so big. Its crazy how a few inches, compared to Daniel's 33", can make such a huge difference. I mean the mass of that halibut was ridiculous! Even double-fisting the tail wasn't enough to carry hit. Holy cow... I get excited thinking about it. Congrats again man :High Five:

Thanks for inviting us out to fish with you. I saw the conditions the day before you asked and was going nuts over how nice it was - sky was going to be over cast, calm swells, warmest day of the week, and grunion runs. I knew I wasn't going to be able to fish because I had a paper due and a midterm coming up, but as soon as I got your text the following day, I forgot all about school haha. And it was totally worth it. We have to do this again some time - the +30" and everything!
Next time I am going to say "I haven't caught a 30"er on this rod yet" as I reel in my lure and see if it works. You never know... Poseidon might love making fishing moments like that... you know??? hahaha

It was a pleasure getting to fish with you Jason. Lets get some WSB next time.

BTW, FH show was pretty fun. Not too many great deals but overall I had a good time. Ended up picking up a Avet MXJ standard and a custom Calsar 800ML for $350. We also got those 30 leadhead packs which was a pretty crazy deal.

Robert, our SWAT mentor, I wish you were there to share the experience. I was happy just landing my first legal of the year. I didn't expect that I would be hooking up with the fish of a lifetime! I remember telling myself "Please dont come off, please dont come off. I don't care if I ever fish again for the rest of the year, I just want this FISH!" and just like that Poseidon answered. :Dancing Banana:

Tess was actually happy for me. However, I think it would have been a different story if I caught the big flattie standing next to her LOL. I think once we take care of a few things on the wedding end I can convince her to do a surf outing. Hope to see you soon.

Oh and yes, she can be a Monster at times LOL:ROFL:

A 3 foot halibut?!? Nice job guys! Also nice job on the release, must have been tempting to keep all that meat. Thanks for sharing your trip

Thanks. It wasn't that tempting for me to keep the big girl. I think all legal halibut taste the same and more legals will come in the future. However, a 3 foot halibut doesn't come around too often, especially in the surf. I hope the next surf fisherman who hooks her will feel the same way.

Awesome ! You guy's are Awesome !

YES! YES! YOU ARE CORRECT! S.W.A.T. IS AWESOME! :Thumbs Up:

Excellent fish, and from the surf, even better. Great job. I know things were a little shakey once you saw that you barely had her hooked!! Nice fish...

Cadillyak thanks. Cool name and cool avatar! Do you work in Radiology by any chance?

A bead of sweat formed over my brow when I saw the hook!

Wow!!!!!:EyePop: That's insane! Great job J!!!:UDaMan: Marc (bsp) and I were gonna hit that A.O. the day before cuz we thought it might be holding some fish.

Congrats man!!!! Well deserved!
Don

Don thanks. I believe it was you're report that caused a stir amongst the S.W.A.T brothas to hit the surf. It was like a domino effect! Again sorry to hear about the lost fish. It's funny that several others had the same idea to hit that spot, but never did. I guess landing that monster flattie was all meant to be. :Big Smile:

Usually when Poseidon has something good for me, he usually has something better for Tess. But it's okay happy wife, happy life right? I hope everything is well with your family and the upcoming baby.

-Peter

Peter, the LC claims another victim! Too bad you didn't decide to hit that spot. It could've been you with that monster flattie! Well... maybe I'm glad you didn't go then. j/k man! I also noticed the conditions on the surf report changing the day after, so I made it a point to get out there. It's crazy to see conditions change instantly from clear and pristine water to dirty and weedy.

Jason, I highly doubt you'll be getting permission to fish if you keep this pace up!

When I heard the news I was real excited for you but now after looking at the pictures I'm even more excited about the fishing session you guys had and the pictures speak a thousand words! :Envious:

Great job out there guys and congratulations Jason! :Thumbs Up:

Thanks PONTOON! The idea is not getting permission to go fishing. It's "getting her to go". If she goes......you go.

Arthur, I thought I was being courteous by letting the boys fish the hot spots first! I do believe that's what you did for Tess and I when we first got inducted into SWAT at that same AO. Your secret is out of the bag Arthur and I think the brothas will be making you fish the FRONT of the line for now on.

When I landed that beast, I wasn't even thinking about the leaderboards or beating anyones PB's. All I could do was just stare and feel how big this beast was. Heck, I didn't even think about measuring the fish because I was so happy about finally catching a 30+.

I experienced the same exact thing as you described, but I usually don't set the hook until I feel some pressure at the end of my rod. When I felt the dead line sensation, I quickly cranked to keep up with my lure. That's when I felt the weight and set the hook. FISH ON! :Fishing Catch:

Holy Mole... 1 Meter long Hali.....
And another legal...:Applause::Applause::Applause::Applause:
Conrats!!!
DR

Thanks DR!

30+ inch hali :EyePnice
nice pb sesh and cant wait to get my big'un

Thanks PB. They are out there. Go get'em! Hmm...I can picture the title of your thread now.... "A PB FOR PB!"

Great job Jasuuun!!!

Beautiful fish! And CONGRATZ to all of S.W.A.T for doing such an Awesome job on the surf.
Very impressive! Makes me wanna grab my stick and head to the surf! Very motivating. :)

Thanks, I'm proud of all my SWAT team doing so well! Get out there and fish! That same motivation is what got me out of my house and catch that monster!

Congrats on the excellent catch Jason. That's a huge Hali from the surf. What was your PB before? I'm sure S.W.A.T. will be out in force this weekend :)

Thanks Sharkbait. Your report is what finally made me get off my butt and hit the surf. Thank you for that!

My PB before was 28inches at the same AO and yes I do believe the troops will be ready to make their move this weekend.

Congrats on the Toad! You guys giving me the itch.

Toads I think it's time to scratch that itch! BTW when Tess and I were at the Fred Hall show the Hobie Tandems with Mirage Drive caught our eye. If we pick one up, we may need a guide.

dammmmmn nice f**kn catch bro,...

Thanks Aka. AO stands for "Area of Operation". That's too bad that your scared of that big hali. Sometimes the fish can be caught in ankle deep water especially at first light.

WTG fellas. Awesome catch and release

Thanks troutsniffer

Holy **** that is a BEAST!!! That really is the perfect conditions for halibut, man when I ever go fishing its either to weedy, windy, and no fish. Nice work man.

f4l, try looking up the conditions before heading out. You can predict some things but not everything. You can look up weather, tide, temp, swells and wind. The only thing you can't predict is the presence of weed (which I really hate! :Explode:) or the presence of...FISH!

Thien

Thien thanks again for joining me out there. My catch made it that much better hooting and hollering about it with you guys. The big butts are moving in and I know you'll get your qualifying fish soon. You just need to stop thinking about it. Have some kalua in your coffee in the morning. LOL Start the morning off with that LC I gave you. It is my go to pattern early in the morning and on dark overcast days. Oh and remember to keep the hooks sharp at all times. I think you or Daniel were talking about "rusted hooks"? :Rolls Eyes::LOL:

The difference in a few inches makes a huge difference in the fish's overall size: girth, width and weight. That was the first time I ever had some trouble holding a fish up for picture taking! I will never forget how I caught my first legal on my new rod LOL. Ask and you shall recieve :Fishing Catch: BTW I hope you made up that midterm and paper.

Glad to hear you picked up a cool tuna setup. I picked one up too, but I was on a budget. An Ugly Stick Tiger 7' Medium paired with a Penn Special Senator 3/0. Retail price $125. After applying gift cards $60. :Dancing Banana:

Wooh Yeah! :Death2Above: You guys are rocking.
Just reading the report made me feel like my feet were in the sand.
That is a bad *** hali you got, 37"er. Man oh man, it looks like spring season has officially started.
Congratulations Jason to your PB 30+ (plus SEVEN) inch Halibut, I thought you were gonna take your next one home. ahhaha. Great release, SWAT style! :BFish:
What a great way to break in your new reel and lure. Thanks for the report and sharing the moment with us.
Albert (jinbow)

Thanks Albert. I really was going to take home my next one, but little did I know that the next one would be my PB
It's okay I'm kinda glad I came home with nothing :Big Smile:

Holy crap!!! :EyePop: Now that's a barn door Halibut. Nice catch and the release is just as impressive. :Applause:

Dude, When I got the text, I totally didnt believe you lol.
I thought you were busting one of those tricks "And I got a 36" Legal"
Well, LEGAL what? Leo? Shovel? WSB? lol but man, a 36" legal hali is ridiculous.
It looks like the monsters want to come out this year, thats three 30"+ this year, kinda early in it too!
Congrats tho bro, you deserve it. Way to use Wingnut's tactics to the T, those rooks fell right into it.
I'll catch you guys on the sand soon. Im almost back on my feet.

Hey Frank, the pics don't lie! Who woulda thought that letting others fish ahead of you could get the fish all wound up for the the guy that follows. j/k LOL I wonder if this will start a trend. I can picture the next SWAT outing going something like this "After you!" "No that's okay, after YOU!" " No really I insist AFTER YOU!" Hope you get back out there soon.

That was a beast of a hali!:EyePop: Congrats on the new PB and spending the day on the water with good company.

Thanks 5150. She was quite the beast! I'm thinking about putting larger tail hooks on my LC's now. You just never know what your gonna get when you're out there.

BONUS PICS

I thought this was a funny pic. I don't really remember exactly what I was thinking here, but it looks like I'm whispering something to my big flattie before sending her off. "OH FAREWELL MAH DEEARRR!" :Crying:

Jason,

When I got your text I got a huge grin on my face! Congrats on breaking into the 30in+ halibut club, and way to set the bar even higher for the SWAT contest. SWAT's already put 3 30+s on the beach this year, and you topped the list with your new PB and first legal of 2013. Great job man, and I look forward to fishing with ya soon!

Jason,

Congrats on your PB Hali. That is truly an amazing catch.

I really enjoyed your story because it felt like I was there with you guys. The next time I hook up on something that feels like a "shovelnose," I will pray to Poseidon and wish for a barn door hali also. Now that the weather is getting better, I will definitely be hitting the water with my bros (radray and Ulua1) and the kids. Your monster catch motivated me to get back in the water and post in FNN too. When I catch that PB Hali, I will release it with class just like you and the other SWAT guys have done.

Thanks for the motivation....Is Tess eager to catch her own too?

JEEEEEEESUZ Jason, that... is....... AWESOME!!!! :Envious: What a solid get that was!!! Bachiboy had told me the story as it broke, but it didn't really sink in until I just saw the pics. Congratulations on a real beauty!!! That's one of my usual spots, and most of the time I walk away with a dry tape measure, and two white stripes down my back - so I'm SUPER impressed by your skillz. And thanks for putting her back. Maybe I'll find her again. :Rolls Eyes:

Thanks Nate you're too kind. :Envious: I wouldn't say that I have skillz. I was just in the right place at the right time.

I know that place gets a lot of traffic, so as long as you're there early enough and the tide is right, there's a good chance of catching fish. I hope the big girl finds your hook one day NEXT year. I need to maintain my place on the leaderboard.

There were a few tense moments during the battle but you brought that fish in beautifully. I couldn't believe how big it was when you finally beached it!
