My brother was down for a snow bird trip from Wyoming. We grew up in Arkansas fishing for crappie, and before he came down this time, he said he wanted to catch some "saddle blankets." That was a term we used for slab crappie back then. I fish for bass mostly now, so I had to do a little advance scouting to make sure I could accommodate his request. Here are a couple from my prefish:http://i202.photobucket.com/albums/aa24/Fishbreath92028/Feb262013004jpgRev_zps05d0df7e.jpg
I was pretty sure we could get big numbers if we fished the edges where the males would be beginning nesting duties, but we wanted trophies, so we decided to fish the staging areas for the big females. Here are some from our trip. I think a lot of them would qualify as saddle blankets.

We couldn't resist going in for the easy pickings, so we did catch some males as well. Some of them were pretty good size too:

We were using crappie jigs and light tackle, but we still had to deal with those ubiquitous green carp. We wound up with almost as many bass as crappie, 26 to be precise.
