if you don't have a swivel you can tie a rapala knot, it really frees up the movement on your bait

I second the open loop/rapala knot. If not, I'll use a snap preferably duo lock. I'll cut the barrel swiv off if there is one attached to the snap. For the most part, I hate those things.
