Headed out to Mammoth in hopes of some fun in the sun, but when we got there things didn't look so good, thunder showers were predicted for the afternoon.

We unloaded all our stuff and walked out the door.... It was raining, but it only lasted fifteen minutes then stopped. I looked to the sky above, it was as if someone was trying to say something to me.

I looked around for some kind of sign, and behold... in bold gold letters!

Fearing the rain in the mountains my first thought was to hit the upper Owens. After a brief stop at Performance Anglers (nice people there that were very helpful and kind, also confirmed my thoughts about fishing the Owens) we were off on a mission. When we got there we tried to look for a nice spot to fish but the cows were everywhere.

After finding our way through the the large maze of cow pies ( those things were huge ) we were able to fish. I had to take this picture, thought is was funny.

It was instant bendo on the Kencors. Oh my... this is trout country for sure, nothing of size ( 10 to 13 inches ) but on ultralite 4.5 foot Kencors and Okuma IA 10 reels the size of your palm loaded with 2 pound test it's a blast!

The bite was hot and non stop.

Even this guy cruised on by to check things out. I guess we were doing better then he was? http://bluehuntercatfishing.com/images/tmp2/IMG_0269.JPG

We had our limits in under an hour so we decided to head on up the mountain, no need to poach.

A view of Twin Lakes.

The next morning we went to Twin Lakes. Theres nothing like the smell of fresh pine trees and the morning chill in the air.

It seemed like it was full of weeds, so we headed off to June lake loop. Silver lake was scenic so we did some fishing and took some pictures.

We saw some deer while exploring this dirt road that lead to the back side of Crowley Lake as the sun started to set.

The next day it was back to the upper Owens for the sure thing. Limits again, no problem.

All in all it was a great trip, lots of fish, nice scenery, and good times. Fishing the mountain lakes was slow but the upper Owens made up for the slow bite in no time at all. I just used half a crawler rigged Carolina style with a quarter ounce egg sinker about 20 inches above a #12 mosquito hook. I also fished the artificial lure with barbless hook section of the river and caught and released many fish on the same setup with no barb and pink power worms. It seemed like anything pink and wiggly they just slammed. Anyways, a special thanks to Mammoth Snowman and Performance Anglers for the insight on the weather conditions and the hot tips.

Very beautiful pictures, great report!
That bend in the river looks so familiar, but I bet there are thousands of them out there in cow country.
The cow pie picture caught me off guard haha, nice touch.

Pardon my ignorance on this but I wasn't able to reply the thread mentioning Performance Anglers so decided to try this route. I'm interested in fishing the Upper Owens sometime and a thread mentioned talking with "Performance Anglers" for some help. Where are they located so I can stop by the next time I go up?
Thanks

Well SDJHawk I'm not sure if Dana would approve of me putting a link on here. So... I'll do it this way. They have a website under the same name with all the info you need. Good luck!

Thanks for the kind note. Yes, most of the fishing pictures were from the upper Owens. This was the first time I have fished that part of the Owens river. I usually fish the lower part but like the upper much better. The water is much cleaner, not as murky and the fishing was great. The only bad thing is the different regulations on certain parts of it. You need to read up on it, but there are signs posted on the fence that you have to hop over to get to the river from the dirt road.

Thanks for the kind words. Yeah, I know what you mean. One would never guess that they would put up such a good fight. I think it might be because of the colder water plus they are always fighting the current?

Nice pics! It looks like that frequently up here so it is always a beaut up here. We have had weird thunderstorms and showers a few weeks ago so I am not surprised u encountered rain. I have never fished the Owens and I live here.....haha. Too many choices but the mtn fishing is VERY slow so I think I will have to try other places. Thanks for sharing!
