Hows it going Ladies and Gents so ill start off this post with talking about my new Backpack Rig that i love and work my way to the Report. So do to the fact that i dont own a Third Grip or anything like it i took matters into my own hands :Envious: i needed to come up with a way to carry my rods while fishing so there not in my way and so i'm mobile. I decided to use my old Backpack and took 2 pieces of pvc that were 1ft long and 2in in diameter and strapped them down with plumbers tape to the first zipper pouch of my Pack. Then i tided some rope to the zippers of the first pouch and one more piece to the carry handle and attached them all to a clip. I did that so the zippers would not open up and drop the rods not that the zipper opens on its own but hey on the surf better safe then bobbing for rods right . All in all i love this rig it works so awesome tried it out on a few trips already and finally felt confident to share it . Please feel free to use this idea if you guys like it trust me you wont regret it lol. Here are some pics of my backpack rig.

After taking some pics and checking out DWrods new custom rod work we started talking about fishing like usually lol, and decided hey lets go fishing tomorrow morning. So it was a plan Team Dead Weight was to storm and raid the beaches of El Segundo at the crack of dawn. We then started to get our gear together and rigged up some Big Hammer swim baits "Gitzem Style" which was a swim bait with a Gitzem jig head.

Shortly after BOOM my rod was doubled over and the fight was on brought it on to the surf and just as it came out of the water i saw it was a nice big sized BSP maybe 12in he did a shake and bake and off my hook gone  as i walked back out to the sand looking at the sand i could hear DWrods lol at me i looked up and there he was just nodding lol i said to him that does not satisfy me as a skunk buster so back in i went but nothing :Crying:. About 5 mins past and i hear DWrods yell out GET BEHIND ME BOY lol so i turned and there he is fish on lol another nice BSP and this guy said for get the trap hook i want the whole thing lol.

Not much longer i finally landed my real skunk buster lol a smaller sized BSP hey i was happy :Big Grin:. No pics tho, i didnt notice that the last two pics of our catches i had napped my camera had sand on the lends and was all fogged up oh well tho. Finally we packed up and walked back to the car once at the car i was able to wash off my camera and take the last departing pics.

I like the backpack rod holder idea, very creative. Holds the rods higher than the 3rd grip and completely out of the surf. :Thumbs Up:
Better patent that thing quick!

Nice report and good job on the Perch... they will be spawning soon so please release the pregnant ones when you catch them.

The stinger on the swim bait seems like a good idea, but does it affect the swimming action?

Sweet custom backpack, its great what you can come up with using a little ingenuity, and find lying around the house
bonus points for the stinger trick, i like using smaller diameter wire hooks for the least amount of tail drag and the most action in the baits.

Great way to rig the hammer with the extra hook on the tail. Now it'll be harder to miss those dinks.
Thanks for the report and those pictures.

I wish the Redondo power plant was on. I look everyday for steam but the plant is always off these days. Thanks for the report.

Dang Macguyver! Great job on the back pack!

Also, ditto on what Arthur stated about the preggo perch. Please handle them carefully, quickly and let them go. Any amount of stress will cause their water to break. Remember, those little ones in the belly are our future!

Lastly, have you tried palomar knots on your swimbaits? Those loopy knots make me nervous.

Thanks for the report and all of the great pics! I appreciate the effort in the nice write up and images to help us along.

Like the the report and pics, I've thought of trying a stinger for the swimbaits,I've had plenty come back with no tail,I also like the red hook in that application,Thanks!

Thank you, and it sure does i have been nailed by a few waves pretty bad and my first reaction is check my reels and everytime there bone dry lol. I just rather everyone enjoy it and use the idea how they want and make it better then me make money or anything off of it after all we all are family and friends right :Big Grin:. Yeah i have gotten a few pregos in my day so im pretty good with handling them, i have even had one burst right as i pulled it on to the sand i was sure to holster my rod and run like a bat right out of hell to pick up the babies and put them in the water as fast as i could now that was an awesome sight seeing all the lil baby perch just swim off into the sure just awesome and of course i was sure to put big momma perch back in with her babies. As for as the action goes i cant tell the difference i have done a few test in my fish tank at home and on the beach when the water is nice and clear i have thrown in 2 swimbaits one with trap hook one with out and they both have the same action idk if its because i use power pro line for the trap hook and has no memory but ya the action is the same. I have not tried it with any other line yet because well like they say if its not broken dont fix it lol.

Thanks, i have tried both knots and both work fine but i just feel like i get a lil bit more action with the Rapala Knot as long i make sure i keep the knot wet when tying it and tie it right i feel fine using it all 3 of my legal butts have been brought out with that not so im fine with it all though yes the polomar is stronger but ya just my 2 cents

Nice job on the rod holders and the perch. One tip for rod holders made from PVC...burn the cut edges if they're a little rough or sharp. Might save some scrapes and scratches to your rod handles and grips.

Thanks for the report!

Hi ya SoCalMike565,

I really like the interior-of-the-backpack rod holder idea! What a great idea! :Thumbs Up: You are a very creative individual Sir!
Another reason that I like it..... is that it will better protect the reel from salt air (breeze) and or salt water exposure from regular usage! Brilliant!
My problem is ..... I tend to go chest deep and have been known to go submerged (skeeshing) at times :EyePop:...while working the outer kelp beds!

I use a Cabela's backpack by choice, it is lite and it has a single rod holder w/ a rod-base holder, it also has (3) three sets of Velcro straps running up the out side of the back pack for securing the rod vertically to the pack. My $70.00 backpack also comes with a life time replacement warranty! I'm currently on my 3rd pack!
Now you've got me thinking about Velcro straps on the inside of the backpack!

I also use a 3rd-Grip but not to tote my spare rod. I aim it forward ...... and use it to carry my Lip-Gripper, pliers and stainless knife and to holster my rod.... it frees-up my hands while I'm removing hooks from the mouths of fish, re-baiting hooks and or while re-tying a fresh set-up while waist deep in the salt.

Thanx Mike for the fish report and the great idea with pic's!

Thank you :Envious:, Oh i see yeah i see how that would be a problem lol, the velcro straps idea is good im just not to sure how that would hold up if wet or anything thats why i used plumber tape also there aluminum so im not worried about it rusting up on me  also its just more secure im not worried at all about them falling out. I also have a belt like that but mine is just a regular canvas belt and i have on it my pliers, diving knife, lip- grippers- water proof camera and pouch as for holstering my rod i just tuck it into my belt and it works for me.

Good job putting yours to work!
Even though you didn't touch it at least you saw what it was...
There will be a time when your rod is about to break, you can't see the 15# plus fish and then it comes unbuttoned...:Angry:
It has happened to everyone and will continue to haunt us all for the rest of our fishing lives...:Big Grin:
Keep up the good work Bro,

Way to go on the perch!
I did something similar with my backpack when I needed to carry around an extra set up. Very effective:Thumbs Up:

Pretty crafty :Big Grin:
I thought about using that trailer hook for bass fishing but was always to lazy to try and I thought it might get caught up on help easily. I am sure they killed the perch out there.
Thanks for the report

Nice little setup you got there. Like Wingnut said, I like that the rods are higher up so they are out of the sand/salt. I've thought about using the same trailer hook setup for the spotties when they're short bitin everything. Nice stringer of perch.
