First time fishing for the first time with John on his super 25’Parker, The “Horndog”, Sat. 2-02-13, We launched out of Cabrillo’s in San Pedro at 6:15 am, our beginning destination being the Palos Verdes Coast. It took us about 20 minutes to reach the structure spot where we would be targeting Bass.

The short Harbor tour was highlighted by the spectacular Sunrise:

The meter lit up with some very fishy marks and we both tossed out our plastics with high expectations. Water Temperatures were only 55.6 degrees. There was puddle ling bait all around us, with porpoise and birds keeping us company. Outside we saw a few grey whales heading south.

John got the skunk off the boat with this nice Calico Bass:

The critter fishing was in full gear as we both caught Gopher Cod and Copper Rockfish. Then I got slammed on my light 12 pound outfit and this big boy put up a good fight:

We caught three Rockfish to every Bass. It was a steady bite most of the morning despite facing such flat calm conditions that we barely moved. A small breeze would come up and our drift would increase, and then back to no drift at all. It kept changing all morning. A breeze, none, and then a little current, which lead to a lot of guessing on how to setup on the meter marks, which were ever present. Huge bait balls, nice fish marks and a good stone here and there. It all produced an outstanding day of local fishing.

A Calico Bass was caught way up in the water column:

The big Sculpin were on the chew:

John found the small Reds an easy target:

The Johnny Bass were also on a serious chew:

A few decent Calico Bass beat the Sand Bass and Rockfish to the plastic:

John with another Sand Bass:

We caught 12 Sand Bass, 8 Calico Bass, 6 Reds, 12 Johnny Bass, 8 Gopher Cod, 6 Sculpin, 3 Copper Rockfish, and one Starry. This was one heck of a local fishing trip.

We called it a day at 1:30pm. All fish but two Sculpin were released to fight another day.

Thanks so much for the invite John, can’t wait for our next adventure together.
