Last month ended on a weak note for me so I was determined to improve my chances. Brought both the fly rod and baitcaster this AM. After an hour of dinks on the fly, I switched to the baitcaster and LC. Look what Poseidon brought:

Although I didn't bring a tape, using my rod as a measure this guy looks to be 16 1/2"+; a size 11 wading boot is there for reference, too. Thanks to everyone on this forum for tips and suggestions; my LC is sporting ruby-red gills and a nice red stinger tailhook.

Yep that's the way to start off Feb. that's for sure.

Just a Tip for ya.. Surf fishing is tough on the equipment no matter how well you take care of it when you get home. One thing I was taught and would like to pass on is, that whenever you set your rod a reel down, place you hat under it. Less chance sand will enter the reel and send you home early.

Keep at it and good luck

I generally go with a red or orange checkerboard; sometimes a grey/white clouser. I'm still trying to figure it out. I've been using a sink tip line but think I need to trim the tip back shorter. The thing's a beast to get out of the water for a new cast (so much so that I've got some tendinitis going on). I'm open to suggestions.

Here's a catch from last week:

vtaflyer-
Maybe try using Rio Outbound Short or Airflo 40+. Get all of the intermediate line inside the rod tip and roll cast to brink the sink head out of the water. Are you having problems with slack line due to the floating line getting tossed around in the surf?

Another pattern you could try is Doug's Ghost Minnow. They can be got at Marriott's.

Nice catch!

Thanks for the suggestion. I'm using an Airflow Streamer Max 8w.; it's got 18' of tungsten tip, 9' of intermediate, then the running line. It works great when I strip all the way in, as you suggest, but I guess sometimes I'm in a hurry. I usually roll, one back cast, then out; I'm also getting better at double-hauling. An online review suggested cutting off a bit at a time (6"-1'). I've been using a length of 8# mono as a leader, nail-knotted to the tip end.

Nice big perch there . Bring that measuring tape next time in case you catch something bigger like a legal hali or better! Thanks for the report.
