the Absolutely best place ever....hands down.... period .... to get sashimi grade fish is at this Japanese market chain call Marukai.

the nearest to me is 50 miles but they have top quality fish that i dont mind taking the drive plus its an excuse to go fishing at the coast. They have almost all sashimi type of fish, eggs, urshin, wasabi, and pickle ginger.

They have many stores through out LA and OC area. To name a few.... Costa Mesa, West Covina, Gardena, Redondo, Little Tokyo, and even one in San Diego. A membership is need for $10 for a year or $1 for a one day use. Believe me its worth it... i bought the 2 or 3 year pass....hehehe.

While your there, load up with many popular Japanese dishes that you can make at home. Our family love Gyoza, mochi, miso soup, sashimi, kobe beef, terriaki chicken, etc.... u get my driff.... We seldom eat out at Japanese restaurant because you can find everything you need there. The quality and reasonable prices allow us to enjoy a whole family meal with all the favorites for half the price.... plus.... all the Kirin, Saporro, Asashi is almost always on sale. 12 packs for $7.99 or 24 packs for $13. They also have a very good selection of SAKE!

Marukai is our secret weapon when we want to impress guest with at home quality grade sashimi. We blow their minds out with the whole experience...

They also have sushi grade fish at any 99 Ranch Market (a Chinese chain). It's among their most expensive items, but sushi grade always is. I think there are some 99 Ranch Markets around Long Beach. Some of their fresh fish might also be sushi grade and less expensive. Korean markets also have sushi grade fish, I think, but I can't remember their names right now. We usually go to the 99 Ranch Market on Nogales in the City of Industry.

Balleronbguget is correct, though. If you are just looking at pieces of fish, or fillets, they are often mislabelled as more desirable species. When you catch your own, you at least know what you've got, and it couldn't be fresher. Also, markets like 99 sell a lot of whole and even live fish. I think Marukai sells whole fish too, but I don't recall any live ones.

Coming from the LBC, the nearest Marukai would be either the one in Torrance or Costa Mesa.

http://www.lafishco.com/index.php is open to public(i think) if you dont mind the drive to DTLA. you can always order online http://www.bluemarineseafood.com/ depending how much you need.(limited item, kinda pricey, but restaurant quality). mitsuwa and japanese markets are good if you want to buy small portion and pay premium for okay quality.

We have probably seen your father-in-law there, in that case. :) It's not close to where we live, since we live in MoVal, but it's close to where daughter Isabella lives.

While we're on the topic....

I ate some shiro maguro a few weeks back, quite tasty.

What is the 'sauce' that they put on it? It's a bit citrusy, contains green onions it seems....

Is it ponzu? yuzu?
