How big are your balls? (for downriggers that is!)

I am wondering what the average weight ball or torpedoes everyone is using and why ?

Mine is 6 pounds. Just happened to choose that one as I was standing at the display in Bass Pro shop. It gets a fair amount of blowback when trolling a U-rig but not too bad. For anything deeper than 50 feet an 8 pounder might be better.

10lbs here, started with a 4 and got way too much blowback

I have 3 sets of balls. I was born that way :)
I use 12 lb pancakes for most conditions. They tend to track straight and less blow back. Next, if there is some underwater currents to contend with, I will switch to the balls with fins. This helps take your downrigger lines out to the side a bit, helps your spread. And last but not least, your basic round balls. They pretty much suck as the blow back can be insane at times. At times you can be off by as much as 25 feet.
But hey, what you really gotta try is running an SWR rig on your downrigger. It is deadly. 200 yds of braid, 4 colors of leadcore and ending with 20-30 feet of flourocarbon.
The leadcore on a downrigger acts much different on turns and when you speed up / down. You can tweek it to your own specs too.

Anybody ever see any molds for finned weights . I have plenty of lead and the equipment to melt and pour it .
